Singaporeans are so SPOILT Part 2....

Over the weekend the Straits Times explained clearly how spoilt Singaporeans are. They are so spoilt they complain that their world class MRT and buses are too crowded. I've long suspected that our world class transport system is among the best, as long as you're not pregnant or overweight, you should have no problem breathing during the rush hour squeeze. Also in the Sunday Times is a Finnish PR who says he prefers to stay in Singapore rather than Finland because... although education is free and considered the best in the world, medical care is also free and speech is also free, he likes the hot weather in Singapore and the our low taxes. Wow Singaporeans are so lucky that life in Singapore is better than in Finland....we should really go to Finland to recruit more foreign talents, I'm sure there are thousands from Finland who are dying to emigrate to Singapore and leave the miserable lives they are leading in Finland. Coincidentally, the Finnish person is a futures trader and Singapore has no capital gains tax...he also has a colorful past which is being actively discussed on Internet forums.
.
Singaporeans are so spoilt, the poorer ones are given bursary when get to NUS. In order to make sure that they are not too spoilt, a strict criteria has to applied to Singaporeans applying for bursary and 40% of the bursary is now given to foreigners. I met a taxi driver who has one daughter (he has 3 kids) in NUS. She applied but failed to get the NUS bursary and has to take a bank loan to pay for her fees and gave tuition on weekends to make ends meet.

Since Singaporeans are so rich, scholarships and busaries are now given to foreign students to help them. See how generous our elite leaders are set aside so much money for bursaries that there is excess to give to foreign students. You can see how much they care for poor Singaporeans.
.
To make sure that Singaporeans are not spoilt, strict criteria also exist for ComCare and Workfare.

Singaporeans should stop bemoaning the govt and get on with the challenges. You should be appreciative of our govt's efforts to help you although strict criteria has to be applied so to make sure that you're not spoilt. Singaporeans are already pampered by the high level of efficiency of our govt. You have food to eat, water to drink, TV to watch, MRT/bus to ride, HDB flats to stay in what more can you possibly want? The govt is so efficient that Singapore Power's profits are growing - we can expect it to be listed on SGX soon. The MRT just announced increased profits and we can expect its earnings to rise because of the fare increase. Singaporeans are so lucky to have an efficient govt we are the envy of the world, even Finland cannot match us in terms of govt efficiency.

That is where I find it frustrating. PM Lee has said the GST is for the poor, and after collecting xx billion in additional GST, only a small portion will be given to the people and the rest goes back to Ho Ching and Gang for punting purposes. I support that every cent in the GST increase is accounting for in the budget, and amount actually spent be spelled out at the end of the budget year. And if you do not like to pay the GST - be like the Finn - migrate. That I guess is the key learning point of the article. And when GST goes too high, the Finn will move out too!

You should not just look at GST increase. There are much much more other factors you need to assess for the option of emigration. A free market economics only encourages and benefits more people like this Finn. Everyone in a free market system is assumed to be selfish and only makes decisions, any decision including emigration, to maximize one's interest or benefit. For instance, no one would like to pay higher price on buying an item if one could find the same item at lower cost in the market. So, This Finn's behavior is perfectly normal in a free market system. There is nothing sad about it. Singaporean must wake up to start behave appropriately in a totally free (now global) market system. If you do not like any policy in Singapore and if there are opportunities, you should adopt a free market mindset to assess all factors important to you and then make your decision. This Finn is doing this. Why complain? The Government cannot help you.

I wonder if the Finn has applied for citizenship in Singapore?

The Finn will definitely go back to Finland for his retirement. I think that answers all questions. Case closed.

Don't tell me that by getting ONE Fin to sing praises about S'pore nullify all the past, present and future concerns that were brought up by the hundreds or thousands S'poreans.

Just one FOREIGNER and thousands of S'POREANS have to shut up.

The way the PAP treat locals in favor for foreign talents is reprehensible.

They treat Singaporeans like slaves for serving NS and low wage labor. Once they find that they can't squeeze Singaporeans further, they get foreigners in.

The Finn will definitely go back to Finland for his retirement. Surely, this is the conclusion if at that time Finland is the best option for him. Otherwise, he will land in another place that offers the best of his interest. Again, he will apply the free market mindset. See, only Singaporean are stupid (true as said by a Taiwanese writer) and do not know how to apply this free market concept. No complaint please!

Lucky Tan, the $900 is per capita household income. So it is not as bad as $900 per household income. But still this arbitrary figure is too low.

And that Finn with a penchant of punching elderly women, any guess where he will be enjoying generous welfare and social assistance when he reach old age?

*He that oppresseth the poor to INCREASE his GAIN, And he that GIVETH to the rich, shall come only to WANT.*

you have embraced the pyramid of wealth and become SACKS SLAVES( as in sacks of money)

since as laborers you have been willing sacks slaves through their enterprising programs, why bemoan your miserable state of affairs to come?

the best ending to this exciting movie awaits you soon so....enjoy all its finest titillation!

During my NUS post grad days, I had a "foreign talent" from China as my project partner. He commented that he was receiving a bursary of about $1200 monthly, which is more than enough for his living expenses and tuition fees...He can even save $600 !! When asked to comment on his future, I was told that his destination is America...after his NUS PhD !!

He approached me to be the guarantor for his China GF, so that they can both complete their PhD studies and migrate to US. I politely told him to F*%$ OFF...

Just to think that I have to work full-time and struggle to complete my study. These treasured "foreign talents" used our taxes to study and leave without any contribution to the country. What great policy our garmen have !!!

Heh, this post is so sarcastic my ears almost bled. Anyway since they chose 3 of the most crowded cities to paint a remarkably one-sided picture that our MRTs aren't crowded. I also wish to compare certain things.

1) Minister Salaries: Why get paid so much? Shall I compare with the countries which pay the lowest ministeral salaries?

2) Houses and cars are practically cheaper everywhere else. I could get a 2.0 litre camry in Aus for 32k Sing. I could also get a house for 400k sing, which a big garden and a garage big enough for 2 cars.

3) National service, of course we're no Isreal, but then again, we don't have as much violence in the region. Freaking delayed me for 2 and a half years. That's 2 and a half years of graduate salary I lost out on.

4) Of course the Ang Mo is not complaining. If life was so tough for him here, why whould he he still be in Singapore?

5) Next thing you know papers are going to say our roads aren't congested relative to KL, India and New York.

Chris, we are the best and number 1 in the world but we must know what we compare with.

chris:
1) compare with other 1st wrld economices will do. its many times other cabinet salaries. they ARE getting away with the money.
2) its RM1.2 million, Thb5.6 million, and IDR6.5 Billion to buy a 5 rm cell on devils' isle (aka alcatraz). denizens of those countries LTFAO when the hear the price.
3)N.S. did me in for the next 25 yrs
4)FT come here for the $$$. very most get P.R., never denizen.
5)Roads will be less congested soon, when the COE & ERP finally wipe out enuff denizens' money.

Singaporeans are spoiled.

Spoiled by letting our dreams get crushed by the MIW.

Spoiled by allowing the MIW to dictate that, THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE. The MIW way is the ONLY RIGHT WAY.

Spoiled by letting our little grey cells die and allow the MIW to push us around.

Spoiled by letting our country become a PLACE, HOTEL and LOCATION to earn money, spend money and then DIE. It is not a HOME.

Spoiled that NS is so relaxed nowadays, and that the fatality rate has decreased. More NS fatalities should occur to wipe out the poor who pays little tax anyway.

Welcome to HOTEL SINGAPORE.
SOULESS ABODE OF MAMMON WORSHIPPING MIW.

i overheard a conversation between two middle age man at the mrt.
apparently, one is trying to console the other with a hard life.
he said..
look at it this way...
two came into the world
both naked
both inherited the same set above and below the waist
but between the ears
one possess a weaker mind, the other a stronger mind
however, both end up being street cleaners
the one with the weaker mind earned $600 p/m cleaning streets
the privileged one with the stronger mind earned $100k p/m from instructing the weaker mind where to clean streets
both died as will one of these days
both leave as naked as they came
at the gate where both stand
the sign reads
enter for being human
enter not if you are that kind that have been feeding on peanuts

It is pretty clear - Singapore is heaven for the rich, ok for the middle class and toughland for the poor.

Other Western countries are heaven for the poor, heaven for the rich (who have plenty of accountant and lawyers) and toughland for the middle class. The Finn superrich will go to leave in countries like Singapore, Monaco etc.

Not sure if this Finn will go back to Finland for retirement unless he becomes broke as Finland has wealth tax etc (and his investment income will be highly taxed also).

Unfortunately Globalisation reduces the income equility betweens countries but INCREASE inequality within a country. I think, going forward twenty years, things will likely to revert to mean - Singapore a slightly more welfare orientated place and Western countries a slightly less welfare orientated place.

Surprise!!! Surprise!!! Civil Servants (ie Ministers) salaries to increase next year. Reason is to stay competitive with the private sector. This is final piece to the jigsaw. After increases in public transport, ERP, utilities, postage fees and GST, now comes the final increase –SALARY.

To the 66.6% who enjoy getting screwed once every 5 years, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

I changing my name to Henrik Hyypia and migrating to Finland.

The NUS bursary thing is true I must admit. When I was in NUS, I applied for the bursaries but got none, despite the fact that my family belongs to the lower middle income group here. I had to withdrawn from university due to my depression, and when I was feeling better, I reapplied and got slammed by the top admission ppl. During the admission interview, the creature said I should go and find a job and don't even think of studying part time for a degree. Spoke to my wonderful MP...this thing wrote to MOE and they said they investigated the matter. Yeah right. A letter came back and it said that no such incident of discrimination happened. I gave up on local universities and Singapore after that. When I get my distance learning university next year, I will move abroad to find a job. This is not my home anymore.

Maybe the PM (Mr.Lee) should cut back on his 2.2 Million Dollar salary and help poorer Singaporeans?

He's currently one of the highest paid politicians in the world. This is disgusting!!!!

Talk about "spoilt rotten"!!!
