Michael Moore's new documentary SICKO.

Ha Michael Moore again....at the rate he is gaining weight, he will soon be experiencing the health care system first hand!

So what is SICKO about? SICKO is a documentary about the healthcare system in the US. If anyone here thinks the Singapore system is expensive, I suggest you try the US system. I was sent on a job assignment there once and I paid US$200+ per month on insurance. My American friend guaranteed that I'll be sorry if I got sick without insurance ...so I thought better not "try my luck". The US system consists of numerous highly profitable private enterprises while the British have the NHS....the documentary compares the 2.

"....after 40 plus years ... the system cannot deliver" - MM Lee on NHS

As Singapore aspires to a medical hub for the rich in the region, ... reduction in subsidy, rising medical insurance cost, means testing which of the 2 system do you think we are heading towards? Clearly the American system that produces so much profits for private corporations is the one Singapore should move towards given our govt propensity for profits. Our esteemed MM Lee clearly expressed his view on the inferiority of the British system so our policy makers know the direction to head.

As we get to top 1st world status and become a profitable medical hub for the rich in the region, I'm sure we will have a wonderful medical system one that will contribute to the high profits of companies within Singapore Inc. Singaporeans are all so lucky to be able to contribute to such a system in the not too far future.

I look forward to a documentary from you on Singapore health care system. Suggested title 'Stingko'.

Singapore Inc - everything has to be profit driven. Thus, health care is no exception. The uniqueness of Singapore's system is that it screws the citizens without them ever realizing it. Singapore is #1!

No 1 for screwing its citizens?

I think the American system is GREAT for making profits. How they lobby the govt to pass laws favorable to the industry. Hospitals make money, insurance company make money, managed care company make money.

Since Singapore Inc is so obsessed with making money - this is they way to go. As we increase insurance premiums - insurance company make, as we privatise medical services and reduce subsidised care, private hospitals make, as we practise means testing we throw more people out of the subsidised care system.

By keeping the $2B in spending on medical care stagnant/stable/reduced, we can allocate more money on defense which is growing every year. We have many assumed enemies and terrorists to fight....make singapore strong and have lots of things to parade on national day.

No Singapore Inc.(SI) = No Country = No Home = No Family = No Singaporean.

SI is the one that brought us to where we are today.

Be grateful and count your blessings.

Lucky,
It is not fair to the Americans to compare Singapore system to theirs! In fact, I would say it is an insult to them. Their system takes very good care of the poor and the sick - government-paid health insurance for poor people, free milk powder for infants from poor family, free milk for all poor pregnant women and children under 5 (It's called "Women, Infant, Children". Type "WIC" into google and you will see what I mean), free monthly food voucher, free monthly income supplement etc.

The only thing is that they do not provide *universal* free care, as opposed to the UK system. And so, since they have to define poverty artificially via some income test, there will always be some family who are not considered poor and so will not receive any of the above mentioned benefits.

Now contrast that with sg: even the very poor do not get any state benefits. We really cannot compare ourselves to USA!

The way to look at it is: UK with its 100% free care is at one extreme end, SG with its 0% is at the other extreme end, and USA is about in the middle -- which is good.
