Mas Selamat : 3 Steps to Freedom....

How did Mas Selamat escape?...Easy as 1-2-3 (taken from ChannelNewsAsia):

1. First, there was a physical security breach as the ventilation window in the toilet – from which Mas Selamat made his escape – did not have grilles.

2. Second, the guards watching Mas Selamat allowed him to close the door of the urinal cubicle when they should not have done so.

3. Third, there was a physical weakness in the perimeter fencing outside the Family Visitation Block, where the toilet was located, which made it easier for Mas Selamat to get out of the detention centre's premises.
Shame on you conspiracy theorists - Mas Selamat did not die, Mas Selamat did not have insider help, Mas Selamat did not go through the toilet bowl. He simply climb out of the toilet window and jumped over the fence. That's it! Nothing to it - simple....THE END...THAT'S ALL FOLKS.... but if you want to hear my thoughts on terrorism - here they are.
.
Let me now tell you why Mas Selamat is a potent dangerous terrorist that can cause much harm to our society. He is potent because he acted on his misguided beliefs and he did it with conviction. He is dangerous because he will not let anything stop him - not the law and not the authority. While his beliefs are wrong and despicable, he does not lack the courage to perform his cowardly act of killing innocent civilians. He is a real danger to our society....our way of life.....
.
"....let's remember, those charged with protecting us from attack have to succeed 100 percent of the time. To inflict devastation on a massive scale, the terrorists only have to succeed once, and we know they are trying every day. " - Condelezza Rice
.
During one of my business trips a few weeks ago, I realised that the country I was headed was having cold spell. After I checked in my lugguage, I went for a walk in the supermarket, I saw a can of soup and had this vision of drinking hot soup in my hotel room. The airport security found the can in my carry-on lugguage, they shook it ..."Sorry sir no liquid allowed". My soup ended up in a big bin along with the people who brought scissors, pen knives etc. My shoes had to be checked, my belt, my jacket etc. All this done to ensure that I have a safe flight - but the whole process is a reminder that there are evil men trying to kill me.
.
Many months ago, I wanted to post a letter so I went to the mailbox at the bus interchange I've going to for a decade. I found out it had disappeared. So I went to the next nearest one at the MRT station, that too had disappeared. I spoke to the staff at the MRT Station Control and they told me it was moved to a less crowded part of the station. The reason why it was moved it was probably they fear terrorists will put an timed explosive in it to kill commuters during the rush hour. Before you board the train these days, you're shown a video telling you to be suspicious of bags left unattended in the train - the terrorists might try to leave explosives. But what about suicide bombers? Shouldn't we scan every passenger before they board the MRT train or buses like they do before they board the plane? What is worse is our trains and buses are so packed in the morning, the casualty rate would be extremely high if a suicide bomber ever succeeds. Shouldn't they increase the frequency so that buses and trains are not
packed like sardines for our safety? Why move the dustbin, and then pack our MRTs like sardines creating a vulnerability? What about dustbins in shopping centers?
.
Like Mas Selamat, other terrorists too are smart. We cannot assume that they are stupid. They need only one chance to succeed and what they do is look for loopholes in your system. Even in cities like London, where terrorist acts were committed previously and people are generally vigilant, the terrorists were able to carry out a series of bus bombings. When it comes to terrorism, you're only as good as your greatest vulnerability.
.
Our greatest vulnerability is the crowded buses and MRT trains during the morning rush hour. There is no point having spending so much money on security everywhere else and then doing nothing about this. We might as well save the money and do nothing because like Mas Selamat, terrorists will not be so stupid to target places you have already secured.
.
The way I see it, it is a matter of security to have buses and trains run more frequently so that they are not packed like sardine cans. When it comes to national security, we know that the odds of a large scale war is negligible in today's world and while terrorism is a real threat...and we have one Mas Selamat running loose and is evil enough to do almost anything. Our govt is one that allocates its spending on security wisely, and it is wise to not have public transport resemble sardine cans and targets for evil men like Mas Selamat. If the govt wants to know where to spend its money, it is here and not on fancy equipment that will never seen any real use.

Lucky,

You woke up this early this morning; or you didn't sleep last night?

Lucky, I finally figured it out. I think I really know what's happening.

Remember the comments following comments.
1) Singapore cannot afford a mediocre government.

2) Singapore really needs a dose of bad government.

3) Singaporeans expect too much from the government.

Now it has dawned me that our brilliant government is actually playing an act of being mediocre and bad government so that we will not be complacent. And like the NMP scheme we do not actually need the opposition to form a mediocre and bad government, Why our government can also do that for us..

does the door in the urinal look new? y is there a door 4 the urinal cubicle?

PAP has failed ... in making up a convincing story of the escape.

The photos at CNA gives PAP away.

Judge yourself. As the previous message pointed out why should there be a door for a standing urinal cubicle? See the photo of the urinal.

And have you come across a standing urinal cubicle that is to be locked by the user?

The toilet looks brand new. The ventilation window peppered with dust and the unfinished cement work outside the toilet show that it had just been built ... for the PAP story lah.

Wah just to give more credibility to the story, PAP even built a platform just under the ventilation window and a white roofed walkway to "facilitate" the escape.

Come on, PAP, you can't even get your act together.

More likely the guy had been killed accidentally during interrogation and the prison escape is a good way to explain the missing person. That's the speculation in town.

>>y is there a door 4 the urinal cubicle?

WKS said for privacy..perhaps ISD's contractor gave 1 FREE door (now it seems hire FTs, employers also get rebates) - so don't waste lah and install lah - don't care whether practical. Alternatively somebody made a mistake and ordered EXTRA doors

that's right. rather embarrassing to see an aspect of a security center that seems to have been ... designed for escapees.

>>y is there a door 4 the urinal cubicle?

Since got 7 rolls of toilet paper...why pick on 1 MORE extra door :)

ISD hoarding toilet papers...price hike coming?

>>seems to have been ... designed for escapees.

Did they screened the contractor(s)?...Best in S'pore, JB & some say Batam?

Why is it that Mas Selamat know that there and then when he escaped he has a confluence of all 3 factors in his favour? In other words how come he can know of the faulty security cameras which wont capture his escape adventure, or rather his limp to freedom?

When I read the report, I find the whole report by the committees comical. Only a fool can believe such story:

1. Guard do not check whether selamat is in the toilet but need to alert other first.

2. Toilet rolls use to cushion fall which is less than 2m high.

3. Picture of toilet wall (behind) show clear that he can safety climb down the pipeline.

4. Escape route from toilet is less than 20m away where there is no one or camera.

5. The distance between the 2 high fences is at least 2m apart, so a limping man can jump that far??

6. Selamat know where is the best escape route.

Incredible escape story. I believe the committee or WKS did not watch Prison Break.

That's the problem in our very 1-dimensional society. The mistake, alarm, the inquiry, report and remedial actions are all generated by one party. I never expected any revolutionary outcome from this so-called inquiry. It's way too predictable. Now, our PM comes forward and talks about "govt responsibility". There's no way WKS will resign.

It's quite sad though. In the private sector, if you make a mistake of such a scale - which results in activating such high cost resources being activated to rectify the mistake (and yet no positive result)... one would either be told to resign or get fired. Somehow, I can't see this happening in our govt. Some iron rice bowls still exist.

a limping guy should not have escaped in 11 mins! ILLOGICAL

You are a marder-farking tossing fool. Remove the PAP-dogma that is blinding your eyes and see what the Singaporean government is really all about. You're stupid to think Singapore's great.

The Point is They still haven't caught him leh.
This should have been told as soon as they got info.
Maybe that why they say he MIGHT have a limp because of the jump.
Result Epic FAIL
Hopefully Reduce allowance money so no time to play, play and be Complacent about working hard.

The important messages that our dear ministar wks wants to convey are:

1. THE MINISTRY AND MANAGEMENT TEAM ARE NOT TO BLAME.

2. NO OFFICIALS ARE INVOLVED IN COLLABORATING WITH MAS SALAMAT'S ESCAPE. SO FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN IMAGINING THESE WILD SCENARIOS, STOP IT.

3. MAS SALAMAT COULD HAVE SLIPPED OUT OF THE TOILET WINDOW ( COZ THAT'S THE ONLY OPENING BIG ENOUGH FOR A HUMAN TO SQUEEZE THROUGH. ) HE THEN MADE HIS WAY THRU' THE STAIRCASE LEADING TO THE FENCING AND JUMPED(DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE'S LIMPED) OVER IT. (THERE HE'S FREED!! AND AS EASY AS ABC.)
COINCIENTALLY THE CCTV WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. (SO HOW MUCH SENSE ALL THESE EXPLANATION SOUND IS VERY ????.)

4. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE GOVT UNDERSTANDS THAT IT HAS TO TAKE ACTION QUICKLY AND MOVE ON. SO A NEW DETENTION CENTER IN CHANGI IS TO BE BUILT. ( BEWARE THIS WOULD MEAN TAXPAYERS' MONEY GOING TO BE USED TO BUILD THE NEW FACILITIES.)
(THIS LOOKS LIKE THE GOVT IS TRYING VERY HARD TO SHOW THAT THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING SO THAT THEY CAN RESTORE THE INVESTORS AND PEOPLES' CONFIDENCE. FRANKLY I DONT THINK THEY NEED TO RESORT TO SUCH STEPS. IF THEY CAN IDENTIFY SO EFFICIENTLY THE LASPES IN WHITLEY DETENTION CENTRE, JUST GO AND FIX IT LAH. WHY BOTHER TO CREATE SO MUCH TROUBLE TO BUILD ANOTHER CENTER.)
5. LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE GOVT WANTS TO TELL ALL OF US THAT THEY HAVE ALL DETAILS OF MAS SALAMAT'S ESCAPE. THESE WERE NOT DISCLOSED EARLIER ( AND DONT KNOW HOW MUCH IS STIL NOT DISCLOSED NOW) AS THEY WOULD COMPROMISE THE ENFORCEMENT OF OUR SECURITY SYSTEM. ????? (HAVENT THE GOVT LEARNT ENOUGH FROM REAL LIFE EVENTS LIKE CORPORATE AND MARKET FAILURES THAT THE LACK OF TRANSPARENCY OFTEN UNDERMINES INVESTORS' CONFIDENCE AND EXACERBATE MARKET FAILURES? JUST LOOK AT THE SUBPRIME CRISIS NOW IF THE WANT TO REMIND THEMSELVES AGAIN.)

Remember the proverb 'a bad workmen quarrels with his tools'. He does not blame his own incompetence. He blames his own tools. That is what the minister is doing. Resign? His master has already discounted that long ago.

From the unconvincing story put forth by WKS and his COI gang, plus the protectionist behaviour of the PM, I can't help but confirm my suspicion all the way that Mas Selamat has been killed either accidentally or deliberately, whether in detention or otherwise.

How come nothing was forthcoming from the COI about Mas's family?

Didn't the COI interested to question his wife especially?

How come the press imposed a total black-out on any news of Mas' family members for the last two months?

Won't Mas' family want to sue the Spore govt for negligence?

Anonymous said...

This whole story narrated by the COI is shit, all shit and nothing but shit.

Sawing off the window lever and doing nothing about installing the grilles for almost a year because of a 'misunderstanding' between the contractor and the detention centre? 'Misunderstanding' concerning the installation of simple window grilles? You either install or you don't install. How difficult is that to understand. Even Phua Chu Kang can understand.

And why was there a ledge just below the window. It looks like it was purpose-built for someone to climb through the window.

I can't believe all those shit.

Its a pity our beloved LTK lost the verbal challenge from Lee when asked for his answer should WKS resign.

Its a a rare golden opportunity lost to STAND UP when in so many local forums grassroots level sentiments, its unequivocal YES that WKS should be kicked out.

This is what I would have said :

YES, PM, no hesitation, no 2 ways about it, if I were you as PM, WKS should resigned by virtue that Smart Selamat limped to freedom under his nose.

Let me give you the reasons. Firstly, so many xx number of man hours has been spent and some more still to check, inspect lookout for him, in the ports, airports, railway stations, coastal areas, from east coast-west coast, under drains, under growth, forests, nooks and corners, everywhere etc. And for 6 weeks/42 days/1008 hours and not even a single hair of Smart Selamat has been found, except the shirt claimed to be worn by him.

Assuming, daily 200 personnel were on active search duty and various roles at any given time, and another 200 on standby/rotation, multiply by their hourly wages of say $10.50 phr (incl CPF hor, total cost per day for wages is $4,200; for last 1,008 days is $4.23 million spent just to RECOVER an escapees shirt??? $4.23 million comes from where? Is it WKS's pocket?

How about the delays encountered by the various deliverymen for, veggies, fishes, eggs, drinks, goods, consumer prodcuts etc etc. Say one consignement delay by 3 hours - then 3 extra hours of wages have to be paid for the delivery teams - and one day say there are 20 delivery teams got stucked for one single day.How much is this $$$$ ???
Just pluck a figure, $10,000 a day so for last 1,008 days is $10.08 million BUCKS of money. Extra business costs will undoubtedly pass on to ordinary folks like you and me.

3rdly, obviously is the posters. Cost of papar and manpower to paste each and evry copy. Say 4 cent each. How about estimate 500,000 sheets up everywhere-bus-stops, public toilets, buidlings, etc.$20,000 used.

Next I come to opportunity costs of above just said.I am no mathematician, economist nor magician capable to work out oppotunity cost of needless manpower mobilised, delivery delays, money already spent to recover a shirt, can put to better use. How much is this opportunity costs. Again, pluck another figure, say a $1 million lost.

The last, and most important reason for you PM Lee to fire WKS is the potential disaster and its accompanied monetary losses that in the event Smart Selamat can caused if he is not found, and when he returns (as someone said he would come back for revenge). He was already quoted as planned to attack Changi.Well so notorious like Smart Selamat, assuming he bombed a high profile target, and..,assuming not too much casualties, just 10 dead , and some perhaps assets lost, hmm a figure $10 miilion is not tooo far-fetched right. How about the human lives's prices, how much will u estimate PM Lee, to be ?

Now this is the crux, if because of his escape, and he being able to cause severe damage, would u reasonably allude that if he has not limped out from WRDC, these severe loss and damage would not have had resulted, right? And if the grille is fixed, CCTVs are working, then the price to pay for those small little things could have saved millions?

So, whats the answer PM? Do you agree or do you not agree that as PM WKS must be fired or not?

To help you, PM, in case u have calculation problem, I have estimated so far the limp to freedom has lost us $25 million laready. AND, and I have not include, lost of goodwill, reputation, investors prospects, tourism costs, etc. Easily here another $50 million !!!!!!
