Rising poverty in affluent Singapore.....

"She went to see her MP for help and she was given $30....."

Now you know why Lee Hsien Loong said GST had to be increased to help the poor. Just look at how much the number of poor people increased after the GST was hiked....thanks to the govt's non-stop hikes in utilities, bus fares, school fees, rent, etc, there are now people who cannot afford food after paying for all their bills to the govt. You thought that GST was hiked so that the govt can forego price increases in things like transport and utilities that will hurt the poor...you are wrong! The GST was hiked to help the poor contribute to the govt surplus. The surplus has created a "happy situation" for our govt who is now able to invest in troubled western banks. While they pump in another $900M into Merrill, poor Singaporeans are queuing for free food at Buddhist temples. These poor Singaporeans must understand that while they don't have enough for food, they technically own a piece of Citibank, Merrill & UBS....they too are part of our affluent inclusive society.

When I heard that they give her $30,I'm Surprised.
They actually thought Money can solve all the problem caused by the Skewed System.
Epic FAIL for that MP.

I thot the Founding Father, Stupid Son and Devil Daughter-in-law own all these investments as nobody else is suppose to question their credibility and integrity.

Something is seriously wrong with the way the country is being runned; we have $900M for crappy banks like Merill Lynch and no money to help our poor citizens.

I'm getting more and more disillusioned with the systems. Can anyone tell me what can you buy with $30 esp with all the price hikes.

好心痛!!

Why no one cares about our poor self-sacrificing ministers and PAP MPs? Looks like another round of GST hike is needed to boost their salaries.

Raising GST is to help the poor.
LOL!

what's the poinr of telling pple where got food at low price??? So they expect someone already so poor living in East side to take the world class public transport to the West side for low price food. This end up having to pay more for the world class public transport in order to have the low price food.

right....increase GST, hike up transport and utilities prices AND get foreign 'talents'...AND THEN expect the youth to contribute to the growth of Singapore...Bravo PAP BRAVO...You have really out done yourself. Hell if i have a chance to leave Singapore for a better life.I'm gone and I'm not going to look back.

What can $30 do?

Can buy a packet of $3 meal for 10 days.

Can paid 1/3 of utilities bill for that month only.

Can buy one cup of coffee per days for 30 - 45 days.

What else?

Not pro-government or something. Just to clarify - government did increase the rates of the financial assistance schemes due to the GST offset package.

Can you share with us how much is the increase of the financial assistance schemes? And the amount increase verses the extra amount of the lower income grp has to fork out because of all the recent price hike.

I'm not anti-anyone and I do not belong to the lower income group. But because I know people from that group, I feel deeply for them. If life is getting relatively strenous for the middle income, what about the lower income group?

The fact is there are still people earning $400+ per month when everything else increases except their pay. And like everyone else, they have to pay the bills, take transport and eat (all price being hiked recently).

They are not lazy, they do work but what can they do... their pay is this low....
forever in poverty ??...and maybe receive some $30 extra per mth??

Aiya just feel very sad lah.

"affluent Singapore" ???
If Singapore is affluent, it's people (most of them) are not. The standard of living in Singapore shockingly low.
