AWARE has been taken over[Link] in a coup-like fashion.
Actually I don't know why...who this group of people are and what is their agenda - personal glory or seeking real advancements for women. While I feel that AWARE has made positive contribution within the framework of our laws and society, in an island where maid abuse is rife and men 'purchase' wives from Vietnam, you will probably be able to find a good number people that feel strongly that more should be done.....and are 'disgusted' with the status quo. I really don't know if this is the reason why these people took over AWARE, .....
Can someone from from the group or know something leave a comment?....the whole country is wondering what is going on here...

With some searching and a few hints, there is speculation that AWARE has been taken over by anti-gay conservative religious group [Link] because some of AWARE members express support changes to 377A....AWARE leaders have also spoken about changes to 375 & 376. I think it is a step backwards when people who don't care about gender equality takes over AWARE and tries to promote its own religious agenda - they are already free to do that at their religious institutions why take over an organisation whose pro-rights agenda they do not share? AWARE's activities have benefitted many women and it will be beneficial for our society for them to do more and not less. Lets put this way, as a non-religious person, it is wrong for me to gather a group of people to take over a faith based organisation to advance my 'non-religious' agenda. This whole thing is not constructive for anyone and serve only to spread deepen the suspicions that already exists.
Our society will always have people with different points of views ....we should let others express theirs as much as they let us express ours. If this takeover is to further advance the rights of women consistent with the goals of AWARE it would have been highly beneficial...but this whole thing is a disappointment and a step backwards for tolerance, living together and respecting each other's beliefs.

No need to get insiders to tell us what is going on lah. It is in the character of PAP to take over every community organization. Even CASE which is not exactly such an organisation was seized by a PAP man. Its former President complained that he was thrown out while he was not present for a meeting.
PAP never allow any such organisation to have any impact in policy-making. Look where else besides Singapore can you find a labour movement that is headed by a full PAP minister. Only in the communist countries.
What is happening in Singapore is beyond belief - a modern feudal system that comes across as a democracy and yet allied with other advanced democracies without being critiqued in the same manner as China or North Korea.
Well as one former ST editor consoled himself at least reporters dont get assasinated like in 3rd world countries, so I believe he was thanking PAP for that lah.
But PAP says Singapore is not 3rd world okay. Like LKY shouted out in his book "3rd world 1st" all because of him, the hero supreme and leader par excellence.
i'm following the issue.
there is a lot of speculation, but i don't think we should jump any gun yet and wait for AWARE to make their release and provide some insight into the recent happenings.
it may be suspicious that there is an increase in membership (which could have translated to the influencing of AGM exco elections/appointments), and that the newspaper highlighted the names of members who have been vocal during 2007's S377A debate in the straits times.
but as i said, let's not speculate now, but wait for their release. when they do so, we would be a little better informed to ask more questions.

Thanks for the hint. If AWARE leaders are being booted out because they want 377A repealed, it sounds like a step backwards for everyone.

Sry but what this about the PAP. There is no reasons for the PAP to be involed in AWARE and I have not seem edivence that says otherwise. Besides if the PAP really wanted to do it, there are far better ways to do it than to put a whole group of new members on the board.

Singapore prides itself for its religious harmony. But when a particular religious group tries to force it's brand of morality on a largely non-adherent populace, isn't that akin to colonialism?
Sometimes I don't even know why I bother reading the ST, but it seems some journalists have a particular religious agenda. Isn't Sundays (or Fridays) meant for such talk? No, if I recall my school days, they have been targeting schools too. Sow the seed early.
So wat if a particular MP was visibly distraught on the issue of 377A, since he/she is so learned, and a Prof. too, she should know better rather than being a bigot.

What operation should be we call this ? When PAP remove so-called communists from Singapore to win election, it is called Operation ColdStore, now history has repeated itself. The AWARE bootoff should be called Operation ColdBoot

this form of religious fundamentalism is equally dangerous if not more than muslim fundamentalism. it is invisible and disguises itself as secular set up preaching their radical views which they cunningly present as "universal values". maybe that is why europe is so sensitive towards open display of christian faith?

I felt a little confuse by what you'd written. Is it a sweeping statement from you that if a person has anti-gay sentiment that would put him/her to have religious agenda? That's quite an unfair statement right?
And I find all this saving AWARE thing is very childish. Unless otherwise proven, like bribery/threatened/etc, ain't this how election works?

read properly lah, the reporter reported the "coup" & plain facts. there is no hint of any gay or religious agenda.
The background of the new AWARE members are clearly Christian extremists.
It is one thing to publicly promote one's cause, another to hijack an organization with an opposing view. This is not good for a tolerant society. These radicals should resign.
