NMP Viswa Sadasivan's Speech.

You can read the full 50 minutes speech here. I encourage you to read it to understand exactly what he said. There was very strong reaction from the PAP MPs and ministers.

" .....I think it is dangerous to allow such highfalutin ideas to go undemolished and mislead Singapore....." - MM Lee on Viswa's speech[Link]
.
"I feel the noose above my head" - Viswa (today's New Paper).
.
What was MM Lee upset about?
.
"My colleague (Nominated MP Viswa Sadasivan) says we are trying to put square pegs into round holes. Will we ever make the pegs the same? No. You suggest to the Malays that we abolish the (Article 152) provisions in the Constitution, you will have grave disquiet. We start on the basis that this is reality: We will not be able to get a Chinese minister or an Indian minister to persuade Malay parents to look after their daughters more carefully and not have teenage pregnancies which lead to failed marriages. Can a Chinese MP or an Indian MP do that? The Malays will say to him: 'You're interfering in my private life.' But we (the Government) have funded Mendaki and Muis (Islamic Religious Council of Singapore), and they have a committee to try and reduce the numbers of such delinquents."
.
Actually I read through NMP Viswa's entire speech and nowhere in his speech he directly or indirectly suggested that we eliminate article 152. All he did was say that having different TV channels for different races and "lost the opportunity to cross-fertilise through the media". I really can't find anything to evoke the above response from MM Lee. I believe in the long run the racial divide will narrow relative to the social divide - a poor Chinese will have more in common with a poor Indian than an upper class Singaporean Chinese. A Singaporean Chinese today probably feels closer to another Singaporean in the same social class than someone from mainland China. While we cannot do it today, race categorisation I believe will lose its importance in the future and we have to prescribe solutions based on social class rather than race.
There are many other interesting points NMP Viswa put across including the need for greater democracy and the need to eliminate "climate of fear that inhibited political participation". The need to bring youths back into the political process to reduce apathy and create a sense of belonging. He also highlight the need to tackle the problem if high income inequality and to look beyond GDP growth to reach the higher goal of happiness enshrined in our pledge.
.
MM Lee said the speech is full of dangerous highfalutin ideas. Actually, the speech hightlights what is wrong with Singapore today and the real changes that will take us forward. In fact Viswa's speech is what our National Day Rally should have been. What is really dangerous is for our society to stick to MM Lee's old ideas, beliefs and false compromises.......that we can trade freedom for security, democracy for wealth and equality for progress. We are now on a trajectory where the growing divide is starting to tear apart our social fabric and the dangerous gaps we are seeing in our society will be our biggest challenges.

The link to the speech does not work.

LKY knows how to divert attention away from the real issues with some strawman. If that does not work then he will go for the "black and white" false choice or some other fallacy. He's good at it, and most people fall in the trap (with much help from the media).

see the ST headline today, he talk about constitution, yet he and his party has repeatedly make a mockery of it, just look at Dr Chee, had he done anything illegal under our constitution? Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly. They themselves can select which rules apply to themselves.

LKY looks sad. He probably feels that threat of the Lee-gime coming apart at the seams.

His final words will be prophetic. If PAP is not accountable - they will be voted out.

Compare that with Minister Tharman silence to our queries on Temasek Holdings.

Scary that there is no push factor for a change in CEO - after how Ho Ching defied MM Lee's assertion that the USA investments should be long term - she sold all the shares at billion dollar actual losses - not paper losses.

And so it came to pass that a hoity-toity Senile Mafia Mentor using his Grandiose and Pretentious La-di-da opinion that is so far from the truth to setup a straw man for those who have given voice to valid concerns.

What to do? It happened......

The pompous pompousity of the senile is so funny that it is fast becoming an international pompousterous act."I ,alone, bring this desolate isleto great prosperity and Golden age u, no"

And Yes, who can forget that China's GDP growth is due to Our Senile effort.lol

In fact,Senile will be the one who will bring world peace as all the Miss Universes had promised to achieved while selling Senile Bullets to Burmese Catty cats.

Pardon the puns.

Was MM this NMP's favourite politician?

Anonymous said...

Well, you know who will be asked to step down by the next election. No, not MM lah!

Of course it will always be voluntary and to make way for younger people. The reasons never vary.

Very instructive on MM views of of minority. They take advice from their Malay Minister no less.

Makes you wonder why then that proportionally, they make a large percentage of drug addicts, drop-outs and lower incomded

What debate? It ended when the old man rose to speak.

From time to time, someone with his heart in the right place make valid comments on the state of affairs of the nation only to be smacked down to remind the rest that nothing has changed after all these years.

I think the whole PAP machinery inside out is full of unhappy people with different views from the few ruling elites. They are really frustrated not being able to voice their unhappiness effectively based on the feedback from the ground.

Wait for the old tree to fall and we will see the real wayang.

for a "balanced" view, will somebody kindly highlight any positive things mm says recently?

anything at all that will make me respect him as i did in my youthful naivety???

That's usually what you get when you have a one-man show, one-man's ideas. I think Viswa's speech is pretty decent and I agree he did not suggest towards what MM Lee had inclinded. So is it fear mongering, or faults and fears starting to show?

Only time will tell.

MM is so fierce. I like.

I read the speech.

I think VISWA is our OBAMA in the making!

I am inspired by him.

Hmmm..Article 152?
So the MaboMentos knew racial inequality all along and had the audacity to mislead all Singaporeans since independence with the National Pledge about "we the citizens....regardless of race...to build a democratic society based on justice and equality" shit??

Pm li should seriously consider visna as his successor.

MM Lee is just showing you his job specification as mentor, including looking fierce and to "rebut" those who step "out-of line" in Parliament or outside. Not just "rebut" but maybe also saying things like our women will end up as maids in other countries if ministers are not high calibre and million dollar. Or our investments are for 20 to 30 years!

During past elections, also as part of his job spec, he also called some opposition cheaters and liars or even sued them.

No wonder the PAP MPs are so "well behaved", for a reason.

So by now the public is quite clear of his job spec as Minister Mentor. Not just "mentor" in the strict sense of the word.

After all where can PAP get 50% walkovers, 66% mandate and 98% seats every election if not for him?

For all these he is definitely worth his millions in pay.

For the last few elections, there is a emerging pattern that PAP lays the groundwork for the upcoming election by galvanising the support the Malay/Muslim community who voted for PAP in higher percentage than other races. For instance, MM's speech in quotes is more directed to the Malay/Muslim community to assure them that their rights will be protected and that the government are more in tune with their needs. This is a subtle play of the racial card which is within reasonable limits as it is not intended to be divisive.

MM can only call his opposition as "cheaters" and "liars" because he knows he will win the defamation suit in a local court.

If he was in any other developed country's judiciary, his defamation suits would have been easily demolished and laughed out of court.

MM has never been cross-examined in court, despite him daring any opposition member to do so.

He was recently in court, and when cross-examined, merely got his lawyer to insist that all the questions were 'not relevant'.

MM Lee is not god. He is also not the emperor of Singapore, even if he thinks he is.

what turned out to be was another PAP man who attempted to think out of the box but got kicked back into the box.

he never stood his ground instead, he was thankful to be a "student".

The older folks are like that. There are entire generations that hold old lee in awe, unnecessarily so. The GCT generation, Visawa's generation and the early post '65 generation. But the post '75 generations and younger ones will be very different.

It is noteworthy to take a look at NMP Viswa's background, to understand the importance of the speech he made.

He was as establishment as they could make.

Personally I am angry with MM Lee for belittling the Pledge.

I grew up with the Pledge.

I believe the Pledge is now bigger than MM Lee.

He should step down for demeaning the pledge.

For God sake - imagine this - students, please stand up and recite the Aspiration....

muahahaha (bitter laugh Kor Cheoh....)

New Obama?
Or New Vivien?

What is MM so upset about the speech?

Anonymous said...

MM is upset because the PAP MPs all useless cannot rebut viswa, forced MM to get off his butt mah.

Anonymous said...

Essentially I think MM is trying to send a veiled message telling the Malays if not for the PAP govt in charge, their whatever privileges as provided under the Constitution can be questioned.

Politicians are good at manipulating racial sentiments. Mahathir was very good at it. Same with MM. It's called divide & rule.

To remain in power, one must know how to act at the right time. It's all part of the game.

Frankly, the so called special priviledges that our Singaporean Malays have is an open secret. I don't think most Singaporeans have a problem with it. Hence, it is a non-issue.

I suspect LKY is pissed off with the rest of the democratic stuff that NMP Viswa talked about but he couldn't attack Viswa on those issues since Viswa was speaking the truth. So, LKY got to find something to "nail" Viswa down so as to send a "signal" to him that he had better tow the line and shut his mouth on certain matters in future. This is my interpretation of the event.

Talking about racial history must have really pushed the Old Man's buttons, given his history with Malaysia over this issue he must not have felt good when others bring up this topic.

Also he probably felt the need to rise up to chastise this wet behind-the-ears newcomer, otherwise the other NMPs may have such 'dangerous' notions as to 'speak up for justice', 'question the truth' and 'disagree with the mini-stars'

Pity though, he could have been a good speaker if he was in in another country's Parliamentary sitting. Except that he was in Singapore.

With the might of the Old Man you must cower before him. :p

What MM said about giving special attention to the minority groups including the Malay race is NOT inconsistent with the National Pledge of Equality and Justice. If you notice that someone is weak and help him to become stronger so that he is as strong as you are, this is an act of promoting equality. At least, I do not need to be a rocket scientist to understand this. Am I missing something which the old statesman sees which a lesser mortal like me does not?
