Breaking News: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize!

Just out on Bloomberg. ...Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”.

Okay he has been president for only 8+ months. Although I like this US president a lot more than the previous one, isn't it early to judge if his diplomatic efforts will work? Obama-mania spread to the Nobel Committee?

Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Nobel Committee said in Oslo today.
Obama, 48, last year was elected the first black U.S. president on a platform of extracting the U.S. from the Iraq war while increasing focus on an eight-year conflict in Afghanistan. All U.S. forces are scheduled to be withdrawn from Iraq by 2011, after the 2003 the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.
Obama is the third sitting U.S. President to be awarded the prize, following Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter won in 2002.

I read somewhere that President Obama personally went to Copenhagen to lobby the Olympic Committee for Chicago (his hometown and where he started his rise to power) to be the 2016 Olympic Games site. He failed.

And someone said this was a slap to his face and also criticised him for being too free to do such things and cheapens the image of the Presidency.

So the Nobel Peace Prize is a saviour and hope that this time no one will say the Nobel Prize was cheapened by being awarded to Obama.

Just like the Miss World Singapore 2009 title was not cheapened by Ris Low being crowned the title before being found to be a credit card and exam cheat.

How the hell did this guy win the Peace prize? America is still in Iraq, they are still fighting the Taliban, "everything is on the table" with Iran, what peace did the guy do?

The "quota" system at work lah!

Correct me if I am wrong, every year they must find someone to be awarded, right? So choose the best available, lo!

Just like down here you must get someone to be a Minister of XXX, so have to choose the best available lah, even if need to pay multi million $ salary.

While I do have hope that Obama will do great things for the world, it is too early to award him with a Nobel Peace Prize as there isn't any result attained yet.

Is the world so lacking in people whose life mission is to pursue world peace that the prize is given for someone's potential?

Can't the Award be made after one full term?

What's the hurry?

Think the Whites in America will be nice to Obama?

Silly decision at best.

While I support (and still do) Obama and his effort so far as President of the United States, I am surprised by this decision.

I mean, like Lucky said, it is still too early. Obama hasn't yet had time to do anything concrete where peace is concerned. This would be equivalent to awarding the Nobel Prize for Physics for "Trying to generate fusion power". Trying to achieve peace is not the same as achieving peace ... said...

Congrats Obama!

At least he is not banking in the cheque. Last read he's giving it to charity instead of investing it in properties.

why our leader never get the nobel peace prize for eradicating poverty in Singapore and 7% gst to help poor? Why??? It's not fair!

No worries, they are eligible for another award - most overpaid, underperforming shitty government award.

I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President, he was very gracious about accepting it.

Obama won for being Obama.

Him being the first Black president in the USA has inspired millions around the world, and also started a wave of "freak" election results, where people started to vote out incompetent incumbent governments.

"Yes! We can!" and "Change" were Obama's key slogans that inspired tens of millions around the world.

Why give the Nobel Peace Prize to someone whom most people have never heard of?

Talking about Obama, I know why our wise old man prefer the other president.

Because he us coming down hard on tax havens like Switzerland and guess who is the other one?

Our wise old man truly has helicopter vision to foresee that this president is not good.

The need to come down hard on rich people evading income taxes in United States is simple because it heavily penalizes the poor and middle class who contributes to the economy and country, and to shoulder high health care costs.

Wild guess here. Nobel prizes not as famous as 20 years ago? Thus, need to give the Peace prize to someone famous, so that the Nobel prize can get famous again?

The BBC podcast World Have Your Say have a one hour program about this and it is interesting to listen.

The Nobel Peace Prize is chosen by a small committee of elderly Norwegians. It is not a democratic election. If they think Obama is the person it's purely their prerogative. You don't have to agree with their decision. They don't need endorsement from anyone else. Anyway, it surprised Obama himself too!

I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President and our country. Hopefully, this means we can end the war.

I think this is one prize the Nobel
committee got it wrong.
No disrespect to Obama,he hasn't done anything yet and so far its all rhetorics. Infact the Afghan war has gotten worse. The national debt has balloned.Quantanmo is still there . And he also
paybacked his union supporters
by imposing tire tariffs on China
without thinking about the consequences.A stupid move I would
The committee has also put him in
a fix. He would think twice about
taking forceful actions against
rogue nations without being hypocritical as a Nobel peace laurette.
There are hundreds more deserving
winners than him

How come Lee Kwan Yew never get a Nobel Peace Prize for bringing "peace" to Singapore throught Operation ColdStore?
