This self-exclusion thing is for problem gamblers/addicts to prevent themselves from losing control and start gambling. What's the rationale behind ppl who dislike gambling to sign up for this? Isn't your conscious mind and self-control adequate in stopping you from entering the casino?

My reply is this:
I tried to point out that gambling is bad not just problem gambling. Everyone should not go to the casino because gambling is bad not just for addicts. Addicts start by being non-addicts who get hooked after their 1st time. That is why those arguing against the casino don't want it on our soil because it will result in more people getting hooked. Sign the exclusion even if you're not an addict. Gambling is bad and we all should not start gambling. And if ever we get tempted, the exclusion will turn us back right at the door. The govt's message telling people to PLAY RIGHT, PLAY LIGHT is the wrong message. The point that only ADDICTS need to sign the exclusion is also wrong..because by the time you become and addicted it is too late. Everyone should sign this exclusion. Everyone should try their best never to get started on casino gambling. This govt has made too many mistakes on this problem.
I also receive comments that it does not matter if the govt campaign is encourages "responsible gambling" or "stop gambling". It makes a world of difference. You don't tell young kids it is okay to try some cigarettes as long as you don't get hooked. This campaign to ask people to gamble "responsibly" is a trojan horse. Out of 20 people who start gambling responsibly, 5-6 will become addicts and the problem will expand. The more they run this "PLAY LIGHT, PLAY RIGHT" campaign the worse this problem will get. It will be more beneficial for our society is people are told that gambling can lead addiction (so don't start). However, this govt has other interests like Singapore Pools and now ensuring the upcoming casinos are a success. The problems caused by gambling is handled by churches and social workers. I don't support the prohibition of gambling because it will push the problem underground and result in criminal elements in syndicates making money. What I support is proper education and sending the right message to the people.

The govt's stand on gambling is a compromise between making Singapore a thriving tourist hub and keeping the Singaporeans from over indulgence. I think it is wrong to be sitting on the fence on this issue. You either accept that if the IRs are to be successful there must be local participation. I read somewhere that no casino can survive without local involvement. On the other hand you can ban ALL Singaporeans from entering the casinoes all together. Paying S$100 to go to the casino for a night's gambling is not the solution. This policy is like saying "I am a little pregnant". There is no halfway house for this issue, either yes or no, no in-between.
Just like high end property, the market thrives on rich foreigners, not locals.
And despite the recession, high end property is hot, due to these foreign money.
I believe the same will happen to casinos, it will be very hot due to rich foreigners, not locals.
Come on, the market is the whole wide world, where got not enough rich people? Just create the right policies and conditions and they will come in droves.
Locals? Don't matter much even when it comes to the anti PAP vote!
I know there are people who are against gambling BUT plays the stock market with their money, sometimes borrowing from banks as well. To me, playing in stocks is also gambling in another form. This is not to say that all investments are gambling.
Casino is just another piece of the jigsaw puzzle that will contribute to PAP govt's vision of a financial hub, a destination for hot money and private wealth.
To try to attract these money in, the PAP govt has also lowered taxes for the rich, and lightened controls and regulations instead of more, in order to make Singapore a playground for the rich.
Dubai is a good example where it has a similar vision. Its phenomenal growth during the good times was possible because Dubai is a monarchy which has no democratic checks and balances to rein things in. See where is Dubai today and the latest news on debt default. Singapore under the PAP is also not a democracy, policies are shoved through without adequate checks and balances. Like Dubai, Singapore's breakneck push towards high GDP growth will ultimately be unsustainable.
I love gambling. It really soothes my soul. But I only play 5 ringgit at a time at Genting. If Singapore is $5 per shot and need $100 per entry, I'd rather give it a pass.
There're other forms of gambling where the odds are less against you. Sports betting for example. Picking games to bet on based on their bets is almost like investing/speculating on the stock market.
