Every 5 years we get those "once in 50 years" floods....

The previous one being in 2006. The minister said:

"You can't design for rainfall of this level, it is just too huge. The thing we can accept is that we can only design our canal of a certain size, and at the end of the day, we have to live with some of these occurrences which occur once in 50 years or so".
-Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Environment and Water Resources Minister, 2006.[Link]
.
Looks like we don't pay our ministers enough to create a different excuse when these things happen.
"Yesterday's event, I was told by the PUB, occurs once every 50 years"
- Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim, 20 Nov 2009[Link]
.
I was caught in a flood at Bukit Timah in 1988. It took 5 hours for the water to subside before I could get out of the bus I was on to go home. Al Gore said in his movie, An Inconvenient Truth, that Singapore will be underwater in a few decades. I wonder if the future minister will say "Sorry guys, it is just a once in a 3000 year event" as all of us drown in our HDB flats.

If I am Minister for Environment, I would be very happy. You know why? I can just take my multi-million dollars pay every year for 50 years without having to worry about the environment ..... what a bloody freak minister .... the world's highest paid politician at that!!!

Lets give them a ELECTION RESULT that is unprecendant and only happens once every 50 YEARS.

or we keep paying the $5MILLION annual salary that is also UNPRECENDENT.

Hilarious, and I thought we just need to pay peanuts (not several times $600k) to get a monkey.

Based on the figures provided, the floods in 2006 and 19 Nov 2009 seem different.

In 2006, the amount of rainfall was 366 mm over a 24 hour period.
While in 19 Nov 2009, the amount of rainfall is 92 mm over 0.5 hour period. So statistically, maybe the minister was not wrong about the incident.

It's just one of those things nobody can predict. You are really SI BEI petty in your mind.

If you are not an irritating bastard i don't know what is,

Now i see the reason for ISA! Lock people up like you for good and no trial given is CORRECT.

Yaacob is the best available Malay for a ministerial post, so far that is.

Prior to entering politics he was an academic at NUS.

What is the pay difference between academics (say professors) and ministers?

We are getting those "once in a 50 year flood" every 3-5 years these days. Some places get it every other year.

Our ministers need to seriously get to work, instead of relying on outdated weather patterns when global warming still wasn't serious.

Seriously. I am not a millionaire minister, and I think I already talk more sense than they do.

Anyone has any idea the pay structure?

That is quite offensive word to use. Don't really want to see people making pointless remarks and then boils down to XX Vs Malay arguments. Seen that too much. BASTARDS AND SWINES????

I personally think should employed more FIRST CLASS SCIENTISTS now on to predict these freak climates, no by scientific weather instruments

Paying an academic millions of dollars a year has turned him into a clown. Or perhaps he is and always had been a clown, whether dressed in an academic's robe or all in white?

Sinkapore will be the next Atlantis. Better emigrate and take
your cpf money out asap.

I remember a few years back, there was mild flooding on the road right outside Sembawang Shipyard.

The bus driver was pretty smart. Did a rouute diversion without any assistance from SMRT HQ. TP was there to block the road as well. And the flood wasn't as bad as the recent Bt Timah one as well.

The recent Bt Timah flood gave the impression that the authorities involved didn't know how to solve the problem.

With global warming going at a very fast pace, it won't be a freak flash flood every 50 years, but every 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 years and before we know it, the whole the Father & Son SIN City will be under water.

Yes, find a good place and withdraw all your CPF and leave as early as possible.

I guess the Marina Barrage dun seem to serve it purpose since there is still flash flood lol.

Wah - our environmental ministar doesn't know that flooding occurs to regularly...

And can also kena smoked by PUB that it was a "50-year" freak incident...

Being in his shoes very easy leh - everything take a face value and no need to recheck the accuracy of these "facts" before firing them off...
