Apathetic Generation

I am part of an apathetic generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can bring change to this nation
I realize this may be a shock but
“Democracy, Equality and Justice are important ideals.”
is a lie, and
“Money and material wealth will make us all happy.”
Singaporeans know that
cars, cash and condominiums
are more important than
the ideals in our pledge
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Singaporeans stood up for justice and each other
but this will not be true in my era
This is a divided unequal selfish society
Everyone tells me
20 yrs from now, true blue S'poreans will be a minority in our country

I do not believe that
I will live in a nation where there is a sense of ownership

In the future
defeat of our society's ideals and core values will be inevitable
No longer can it be said that

My fellow citizens and I care about this nation
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and materialistic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it .
Read the message, then read it again in reverse.

I got the idea to write the above from Tan Kin Lian's blog in which he posted this brilliant piece, The Lost Generation, by Jonathan Reed. I rewrote some of the words from the original to make it more relevant to Singapore:

Brilliant adaption piece!

Indeed a brilliant piece.

If only the apathetic generation can really be reversed.

I am talking about it happening at the ballot box, not in blogs or at opposition rallies.

Oh Lucky, you mean you don't know the other Version ie the one that is copied wholesale into a singaporean version one.

There is even a sentence by sentence analysis by another blogger.

But yes Johnathan reed one is the original :)

I think the YPAP had something similar a few months ago. There was a video on you-tube.

Thank God for you Lucky! Bravo! Will support your blog and stand together wih you. :)

Don't know leh, when PAP people highlighted this piece in the media months ago, no one said brilliant.

Suddenly, now, months later, it is so brilliant.

I first got this video from my friend, then came PAP. TKL is slow, very slow and outdated already.

Quite frankly, the reformation of the self-imposed elites in our country can effectively start on the demise of LKY. LKY is the creator of this elitist contruct. The owner needs to disappear for a freer Singapore to occur. Singapore is now internationally well-known to suppress democracy by benting the rule of law to sustain its grip of control over the populace. The way I see it, there will be more and more unhappy Singaporeans in Singapore in the long run. LKY reckon that the more comfortable the native Singaporeans get, the more bored they will become. The more bored they become, the more things they'll look for to protest. The more protests, the more demonstrations. For the time-being, change the law and lock the protestors and activists inside. You will not be heard in this country. And many a Singaporean enter his or her grave in silence. You know there is a saying in this country. You work like a cow or a dog. A cow in that you are to be stupid not to have original ideas and follow through when the master pulls your nose. A dog because you are required to simply be obedient and grateful for the master has built this island for you. These days, people are saying that on top of being a cow and a dog, you are becoming a horse, in that, you are need to be faster and cheaper. The Singaporean RAT is evolving.

Majulah Singapura!

We are a joke. Our President needs a mentor to run Singapore. HAHAHAHAH~~

We pay a man 3 million, to advise another man, whom we also pay 3 million, on how to run Singapore.

We are a joke. Our PRIME Minister can't stand on his own two feet. He needs his father's shadow. And we pay an 86-year-old man 3 million, to advise this man, whom we also pay 3 million, on how to run Singapore.

We pay our PM's wife 3 million to advise our PRIME minister how to take care of our reserves.

What is wrong with us? Have we gone stupid or what? There must be something in our Chinese blood that makes us this way. The malays across the causeway has already learnt their lesson.

Hey John!

We're being bullied lah.

Remember what the millionaire LKY remarked to us stupid Singaporeans: "If your spurs are not in your hide, that's you FUCKING problem!"

The more money you pay him, the bigger his balls got. Just you wait. Before and after elections.

Anon 10:19,

We pay an 86-year-old FATHER 3 million, to advise HIS OWN SON, whom we also pay 3 million, on how to run Singapore.

Now, you can say: "Are we fucking stupid, or what?"

Hey Lucky,

Just wanted to share with you a version I wrote some time ago.

It starts today.
Trying to make Singapore better for all races, religions and sexualities,
Will no longer be our weakness.
Our spoiled ignorant comfy life,
We hold dear.
No matter we are a city, country, or little red dot,
Democracy, Justice, Equality are issues,
We will no longer be influenced by.
HDB upgrading benefits is the thing,
Every Singaporean counts.
In about 2 decades time, I will tell my 21 year old son,
His vote does not matter.
Although people will try to convince him,
That the youth can make a difference with their choices.
We know in our hearts,
Singapore is dead.

Unless we stop allowing such train of thinking,
Singapore is dead.

We know in our hearts,
That the youth can make a difference with their choices.
Although people will try to convince him,
His vote does not matter.
In about 2 decades time, I will tell my 21 year old son,

to johnathan ang, you are right about the obscene arrangement between the mentor and those being mentored, especially the one who is suppose to be at the helm.
he needs so many buggers on deck to steer the ship, holding his hands and his pants.

having said that, i have to point out that WE did not pay these buggers Millions, they simply help themselves to the money.

hopefully these buggers will be voted out soonest and their illgotten $$ recovered by whatever means.

I think you are one of the best bloggers on our local scene. To defeat the imcumbent govt and provide a real quality opposition to contest votes and support, we need more than sheer fervour and enthusiasm. Anger and resentment are only for mobs, not opposition. We need quality people with quality ideas. Do consider to lend your talents to this cause.

Anonymous said...

I urge Lucky to join one of the opposition teams.

I'd been ur avid reader for some years and realised you do have some qualities to become an opposition politician.

If you wish sinkies can do more for singapore...then you must walk the talk.

Else, there is no difference being the apathetic older generation.

VOTE WISELY!

Anonymous said...

Vote wisely?

Provided got chance to even vote.

And provided at least 20 to 30 seats to be won by the opposition.

If not, PAP can still do what they think is "best" for SIngapore, but terrible for lesser mortal Singaporeans.

Chinese version is good. I smsed the url to a handful of people. Rather shock it can be read in reverse.

1) 1st part describe esp the older folks & those who don't believe change is possible. Is like holding a mirror to their face.

2) 2nd part on reverse reading surprised me. Think it'll surprise them is POSSIBLE. This is the important part- a sense of possiblity.

Likewise when the US founding fathers declared war on Britain they had everything stacked against them in army, navy, equipment, training, resources. What they have is belief that is possible to gain independence.

Anonymous said...

At the end of the day, you mother-fvckers will still vote for PAP!

Trusting a Singaporean to vote against PAP is like trusting a chinaman not to sell tainted milk to kids just to make a fast buck.

Anonymous said...

Lucky, pls write on this "
...As long as PAP remains incorruptible" in ST today

The writer Dr Yik is really really very smart.. his example about competition being bad in tha last para was Starhub & Singtel and the World Cup issue. Well Dr Yik forgot that reason these companies exist and are monopolised is because of the very reason he was arguing against for..no opposition to the government. These are both government owned companies with their own selected division one man..what a joke.
