The TRUTH about Productivity....

When they talk about increasing productivity, it always about how the Singaporean worker should work harder and better. The poor Singapore elderly cleaner should be more efficent and work faster otherwise he should be replaced by a young foreign according to MP Ong Ah Heng - that was what he did to old cleaners after a single complaint from his residents.

“I know of one family who complain the cleaners in their precinct are lazy and too old. They don’t want local workers who are old, they want young foreign workers. To satisfy the demand, I changed the local workers to foreign workers. Foreign workers are not a burden to us. Their presence here is not negative. Without foreign workers, things will be worse,” - MP Ong Ah Heng in Parliament.

Yes, even when you're in your seventies, you should be as fast and as nimble as the 20 year old from China that is what the PAP govt expects of you otherwise you don't have spurs in your hide and will be seen as lazy. It is interesting that MP Ong chooses to use cleaners who are paid $800 a month to illustrate his point ....Before I go on to the points I'll be making, let me ask you a simple question : how productive was President Nathan last year to deserve his $3M paycheck? Let us not fall into this trap - that our well being is linked to our productivity and if we have not been paid well it is we haven't been productive enough....
.
Kenneth Feinberg[Link] is Obama's "pay czar". After the US govt bailed out major banks, Fienberg was appointed to make sure bankers don't go back to their old bad habits of paying themselves tens of millions given the outrage among the general public for the bailout. Yesterday Fienberg appeared on CNBC because Maria Bartiromo was doing a segment on Wells Fargo executives wanting to double their own pay. Because Wells Fargo had already returned the TARP money, Feinberg has no juristriction over them and can't do anything about it - all he could do was give his opinion on the matter. This was what he said. Very often bankers would come to him to authorise fat bonuses or pay hikes saying that the executive is "especially talented" or he might be poached up by a foreign bank. He would ask for proof this "talent" and in every single case he found the person replaceable without loss to the company. It was mostly, in his own words,"spin" - bankers over the years have been very creative at manufacturing justifications for their high salaries even as they were about to cause a lot of economic pain to the rest of the population through their careless lending. Buffett asked why the CEO pay has gone from 50 times the lowest paid worker in the company in the 1950s to 500 then to 5000 times - is the CEO today 100 times more productive today? Not possible.
.
When the issue of Singapore's competitiveness surfaced again this year, our leaders cited as examples how waitresses at restaurants can be more productive, our $800 a month aged cleaners should work faster and harder, etc They have implicitly put the burden of competitiveness on the shoulders of ordinary Singaporeans - calling upon the lowly salary earners to gear up ...upskill, reskill, multi-skill, (Lim Swee Say has shown many skills to earn his millions?). Singapore has the highest income inequality in the developed world with the highest income earners forming a disproportionate amount of the cost in our system. We shouldn't be worried whether the $800 a month cleaner has done enough to deserve his pay - we should be asking what President Nathan has achieved last year to get his $3M. Are our ministers productive?..Are they multi-skilled? Have our bankers monopolised the NETS payment system and are making easy money by charging for every NETS electronic transaction? Should anti-trust regulation be used on them? Does the SMRT CEO who is granted a monopoly to operate our trains deserve her millions for squeezing us like cattle during the rush hour? Why is the burden of competition put on ordinary Singaporeans yet again? Why isn't anyone asking if we can be more competitive by slashing govt fees, cost of services provided by state own monopolies, etc. Scrutizing the performance of our cleaners, factory workers, waitresses and the ordinary Singaporeans and asking them to be cheaper, better, faster is going to do little for our competitveness when the fat unproductive over-compensated segment of our economy drives up our costs.

Lim Swee Say said in parliament 3 Mar 2010:-
"So in other words, we're now squeezed from both sides - the cheaper are getting better, the better are getting cheaper. So what option do we have? And the way to go ahead is to be cheaper, better and faster, no other option."

First, reduce ministers/top civil servants pay..
second, lower cost of living..

"Why isn't anyone asking if we can be more competitive by slashing govt fees, cost of services provided by state own monopolies, etc." Agree. We need to relook systems and processes at all levels. The bosses must take ownership; there is only so much individuals can do for themselves. A popular (notorious) example of a bloated organization is the PMO - what is it that they do that requires the "top-brains" (one PM supported by 1 SM, 1 MM, 3 Ms and I don't know who else). Seems a convenient place to park deadwood.

And these people have the cheek to blame the people. If there is one thing the people should be blamed for its their stupidity for keeping these people in power still. Some thoughts I'd like to share.

Someone needs to break down the bullcrap that the facist PAP government sling at us in this exceptionally special budget from all previous budgets.

I have a nagging feeling that the PAPies are gonna make a different game in this particular election.

I can quite fairly firmly believe that the government is gonna drag out a long one for this election. I reckon they're gearing these remaining 9 months in 2010 for the 2011 elections. It's called preparatory work in new propaganda.

In the 2006, the government came riding on the "depression is coming, who are you gonna put your dollar on?" game. It created an atmosphere of urgency and they're the good guys who comes in to help us.

Then we realised, we got fucked in the ass numerous times.

I am excited. I really want to know what game plan they have going and how they're gonna come out from fucking up big time this time; what with their unaffordable HDB flats policy and sacrificing Singaporeans to defend FTs who don't serve reservists nor national service.

What I reckon is that PAPies are gonna oil the main stream media even more. More than ever before to survive as a party for the next 5 years.

When Shuharto ignored the Indonesian netizens, guess what happened to that corrupted guy? The university students brought him down. I can't help noticing that our ministers salaries were increased after Suharto was ousted.

Rest assured. The PAPies is creating a NEW SINGAPORE ORDER WITH THE NEWLY ANNOINTED CITIZENS and FTs.

This time the PAPies have cut a deep wound in the hearts of many intellectuals in Singapore.

One thing is for sure. The Straits Times and Channel News Asia is not gonna experience any more rising viewership. Faith in the mainstream media is already lost. And hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans have been using online media for the last 5 years. Many of my friends don't even watch TV. It has reached to such an extent that my friends find it distasteful and condescending to their intelligence when they watch the mainstream media in our country.

The way I look at it now is that if you want to make a difference: vote for ANY opposition in our constituencies.

Majulah Singapura!

Even if the PAP is so damn productive, why do we have such a huge government for such a small country? Why 2 SM to hold the hands of a pathetic PM? Why 1 Dhanabalan to babysit Ho Ching? If she is so damn good, why is she losing so much money? PAP's own productivity is in the negative figures! Damn loser of a government talking nonsense again.

Top bankers, CEOs, President, ministers are paid a lot simply because they are in that position!

OK, why are they in that position and not you or me? Maybe because they are talented, they work smart or maybe luck (right place, right time, know right people etc.)

So ordinary folks need to find out how they can also reach those positions and the pay will come as a matter of course. If cannot, blame oneself for not having the talents, not working smart or not lucky.

Just like the opposition must learn and work smart (not necessarily hard) on how they can become like the PAP and to even replace the PAP.

Life is like that, partly you can control and partly destiny. Whining and complaining does not help at all.

And Mr. Tharman said that “Foreign workers increase income of low wage families”

The best to check this out is for him to ask Ong Ah Heng yourself.

The job OAH cited was done by one old man; instead of helping him to improve productivity with better tools when one family complained, he brought in a foreign worker and kicked him out. Now he is probably begging. His new income (zero) would “increase” if that foreign worker would give him a dollar and/or some left over food. The same job was done by one person, now we have two – one working and one begging!

And they said this is GOOD for Singapore !!!

lucky has to do more than questioning the competitiveness of the upper echelon of society.

he needs to punctured the myths of scarcity at the top level and most importantly, their relevancy.

for instance, can a one man rule who commands a kingly sum be replaced by much cheaper group/groups rule?

one or a few supreme rulers maybe more efficient but as history has shown, no individual or a few individuals can be entrusted with absolute power with absolute pay and hence, distorting our value system and fair labor compensation.

we need to rethink the corporate model.we need to revalue the importance of "top talents"

this apply to all organization, including religious organization.

seriously, we don't need someone who get paid top dollars for peddling sermons on love. probably a typical nobody neighbor of yours, who does not visit temples, but is responsible, law abiding and helpful and caring to the people around him knows more about love - by being a doer - than one who baths in the limelight and literally, worshiped by his followers.

but we rather pay someone to tell us what to do than working with doers to achieve a better society, don't we?

but why?

because we perpetuated the myth of "the anointed"

if we continue to accept the current practices, then we deserve to be exploited(or cheated of our real worth and value as a people) and be trampled on.

When they want to cut cost/help businesses it's always the wage of workers that gets cut/frozen. Why not cut rent? JTC could reduce rent to offset the wage increases for workers. Why does it always have to be wages? In fact if companies HAVE to pay workers more, productivity will increase naturally. So pay have to increase before productivity will increase not the other way round.

Here is a maths problem for you...
The total pay of the top 30 ministers in Singapore is more than 70 million a year. http://www.yeocheowtong.com/Salaries.html
The number of people on public assistance is about 3000. They can recieve up to S$360 per person. How many times higher is the total minister's pay compared to the total amount people recieve under the Public Assistance Scheme?

Answer: 70 times!!! So much for help the poor.

But remember:-
During this time, the housing problem will get worse.
And viable solutions will only be made available to opposition party who actually listen what Singaporeans citizens have to say.

And the racial quota system that work before will most definitely backfire this time.

Thanks, Lucky Singaporean, for another excellent piece of commentary. But perhaps there's a tinny winny little error in the president's pay of $3m you stated. I was given to understand that his basic pay is $3.87m, not including another 2 components - performance bonus (average of 9 mths) and GDP bonus (3 to 8 mths, depending on the economy). In total, easily more than $4m. Oh, in case we forget, these people are entitled to pension, which is two-thirds of their last drawn pay. So even if MBT is voted out of tampines, he'll still be laughing all the way to the bank.

Firstly, why does our first world country have elderly "retirement-age" cleaners when other first world countries can afford to provide their elderly with a simple, dignified retirement life?

Secondly, just because 1 out of thousands (how many exactly?) family in MP Ong's estate complained about an elderly cleaner, he changed all his workers from local (are all of them elderly?? if so, surely something is wrong with his employment offer) to foreign? Isn't that over-reacting? What about the opinion of the other thousands of families in his estate? This MP Ong Ah Heng should be kicked out of his parliamentary seat.

with the government and the GLCs being the outright largest employer in Sg, where else shld we look at when targeting the problem areas in productivity??

Aside from the experience with SAF during NS which is the ultimate productivity black-hole, sucking in able bodied men for meaningless tasks, I had a recent experience with a GLC. 20 people were tasked to do a job which in the private sector would only require probably a team of 5. Staff sit around in the office yakking away idling. That the public sector is no match for private sector in terms of improving overall competitiveness and productivity is definitely not a myth, even when the former is thinly disguised as profit-oriented GLCs.

This prob makes it even more unconvincing for the PAP government to peg ministers' pay to private sector.

You are indeed the world's most stupidest local commentator I have ever read in my 3 years of being a netizen.

Whatever makes you think that all of us want to be like the PAPies?

Being realistic is one thing. But you are so stupid that it's no longer funny.

A rose should become a rose and a lotus should become a lotus. Don't tell the rose flower: "Look at the lotus! It is so big. You are a small flower." And don't tell the lotus: "Look at the rose! It has a beautiful color and fragrance. You should have that kind of color and fragrance."

No, every flower is unique and different in its own way. A rose should become a rose and other flowers should become other flowers.

Morality is like any other human enterprise. It is an entity that MANUFACTURED by man. Remember George Yeo's talk about differentiating "the highs" and "the lows" in society. He needed that to ride on borrowed respect given by his PAPies' establishment. It is easier than to actual earn respect. Just latch on some Confucian ethic and ride that wave for as long as the day's politics allow you too.

Apparently, you have fallen into the very elitism that the people in control of a large portion of your life has done for you.

Your mind is poisoned, my friend. That's why you no longer have the spirit nor the courage to do what you KNOW is right.

We live to fight yet another day in this country.

The way I see it, Sg has been completely mismanaged under LHL! he has put in so many lousy policies that he will only shoot himself in the foot to reverse out. But the signs are clear - falling productivity, rising unemployment for Sg, a entire social group of FT parasites. And this is coupled with rising costs, companies moving out, lack of technological innovation and ecnonomic engines. We are being squeezed at both ends and the problem is exacerbated by the nonstop influx of low quality FTs. They are going to be a liability not an asset. If they were Warren Buffet's calibre, I will welcome them with open arms but they are here to parasite and leech off Sg. LHL can't see it the blind fool! He thinks he's so damn clever (with his helicopter vision nonsense, well, he's a misguided pilot flying in the fog!) the moment the economy tanks, the FTs will burden and drown Sg.

George says:
There was this story about a fisherman who was asked to keep track of his large group of fellow fishermen, there were 30 of them in all, by constantly counting their numbers.

So he counted, 1,2,3....29. Wait a minute, someone is missing!? So to make sure, he counted again, and again, and again, and again. Each time he arrived at the number 29, but he was sure, very sure he had counted very carefully and he was very sure no one had wandered or strayed away without his noticing it.

As he was pondering on this puzzle along came the king's jester, the court's joker, who job was to keep the king amused during those long idle hours in between his court sessions with his lords and subjects. The jester noticed the troubled look on the fisherman's face, and asked if he could be of help. The latter related his woes of a missing mate to which the jester then offered his help by doing the count to confirm it. For his help the fisherman promised him a reward of a gold coin if he could help find their missing mate.

The jester went 1,2,3....30! to be sure he recounted and each time he came up with 30, the correct number! The fisherman has diligently followed the jester's counting throughout and was overjoyed that the jester has indeed found their lost member.

As agreed, he gave the jester the gold coin as promised. Both of then parted, happy with the conclusion!

The tale is synonymous with our parliament sittings and Budget session for time immemorial.

but how much lesser?

unfortunately, we have a system which also created A LOT of mundane, laborous and unchallenging work(dirty, low pay and low morale jobs) that need to be filled.

now there will come a time( or has it already dawned on us) that those "qualified to be CEO" have no choice but to resign to doing low paying and dirty jobs and be "taken care of by top dogs".

when the time comes, do we expect these "qualified to be CEO" to accept their fate?

Which is quite true. It is rather worrying they are holding a lot of key appointments in society.

Being a submissive specie which makes them excellent corporate employee, they are also susceptible to easy indoctrination(they make good religious followers too). They can be very stubborn which explains why they are supremely loyal to their male masters.

When push comes to shove, they lack the male testosterone or the balls to be a revolutionary leader.

As some1 who was dealt with a less than optimal hand by evolution, shouldn't u do more than just blog? The opposition needs money and bodies. As it is, they will lose.

//
Many religionists do not want to see past histories such as the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the killing of the aborigines (Native red Indians who stayed in America before they were occupied by the Spaniards), etc.
//

PS:
U guys need to read more.
Spanish Inquisition was all politics. Similar to Operation Coldstore.
There were several Crusades. The bloody ones were all about money and politics.
The religionists and atheists are both as economical with the truth. Atheists simply write better.
Oh and Mr Dawkins believes we could be alien experiments ...

Please stop perpetuating false propaganda!

The lie that problems can be solved by putting a cross on a piece of paper. The lie that voting is legitimate. It's an easy way out, but by no means solves any problem! There are nearly 2000 days in between election days which something can be done. Decades of propaganda have indoctrined the masses, including so-called pro-oppo people, that we can only effect changes on a special day called Elections Day. Looking forward to Elections merely increases the likelihood of inaction for 2000 days. Most of the real damage is done during these 2000 days, therefore it only makes sense to tackle the problem right there and then.

The lie that the government made mistakes. They never make mistakes. All happen according to plan.

It is weird that govt and top management will always be assumed they are very productive. Lower end worker are the ones who are always not productive enough.

I wonder will they be ashamed of themselves when old retired workers who are having trouble surviving while they themselves enjoy the luxury of fine dining and make unproductive comments of how those old workers are unproductive.

Dad sick, but public hospital full

Sun, Mar 07, 2010
The Straits Times

When Mr B.K. Wee, 79, started to get bloated and experienced delirium on March 1, his family rushed him to a public hospital.

'We were registered at about 11am and at 5pm, the staff were still unable to confirm if they had bed space,' said his son, Mr Michael Wee, 45.

The latter, who works in management overseas, said the family had no choice but to opt for private care. They took the elder Mr Wee to Gleneagles Hospital.

Minister Khaw had already apologised over the overcrowding in hospitals. I think that's about it.

He is drawing million dollar pay but cannot expect him to be superman.

But I expect he will still win in his GRC at the next elections. Hence he will continue to have million dollar pay and to apologise for any overcrowding in hospitals.

I've got an awesome testimony that I want to give glory to the Lord for.

In December last year, I had blogged about how Rev Peter Koh, the ex-senior pastor of my church had written on my birthday card "You will reap what you sow" and how my initial reaction was not really very positive because it sounded like a warning. Thanks be to God that because I now understand His gospel of grace, my subsequent reaction became more positive because sowing and reaping in the New Covenant only applies to God's Word and monetary support.

And so in January 2010, I decided to do exactly that. I had just received a wonderful bumper crop and was prompted by the Lord to sow $5,555.55 as a firstfruit into what He had clearly indicated to me was extremely fertile soil. Just like a farmer who sows seed and expects that seed to produce a harvest, I confess unashamedly that I was expecting a bountiful harvest from that sowing.

Well, what I did not expect was for God to provide the harvest so quickly! Indeed, He provides exceedingly abundantly over and above what I could ever ask or imagine. A tenfold windfall will be coming my way before the end of this month!!!

When I received this wonderful news on 27 Feb 2010, I smsed a number of my friends who know about what happened between Rev Koh and myself the following message, "PTL! Peter Koh was right abt me "reaping what I sow". I sowed $5,555.55 into fertile soil just last mth n already a bountiful harvest has sprung up. I am expecting an extra $50k by end-March! Hallelujah! God is awesome!"

One of them responded, "Wow, looks like Rev Koh has the gift of prophecy. Maybe you should give him something for prophesying over you", to which I replied, "That's a great idea! How about me giving him a copy of Ps Prince's Unmerited Favour ;-)"

And thanks to this harvest, my wifey and I was at the NATAS fair last week to book a 2-week vacation to the UK for us and the kiddos during the June holidays. It so happens that the Sterling pound is currently at an all-time low of S$2.10 so it is really the best time to go there.

Thank you Lord God for fulfilling this prophesy. Indeed, Rev Koh was right to declare that I will reap what I sow. Hallelujah!

We need a charismatic opposition leader. The PAP is still in power because the opposition cannot get their act together. What we need is a good leader, perhaps Tan Kin Lian, Kenneth or Chee to form a opposition alliance like Anwar did and fight the PAP as an organised group campaigning for each other other not stepping on each others tail. I divided opposition makes it easy for PAP. Imagine the reach the opposition will have if they make a concerted effort to campaign against the PAP. Singapore is small and pertinent points against the PAP mentioned at one rally will carry aross to other consituencies by word of mouth or internet even if MSM does not do it. They need to rebutt the PAP polices with valid arguments and facts like its none in the web in sites like Lucky's, TOC, Temasek Review and the opposition sites. If the opposition works together and can agree on a power sharing agreement, than the PAP will lose its control over main stream communication. I was so surprised that 5 out of the 10 singaporeans did know the following simple facts
1) That we have the world 20 highest paid politicians.
2) 36% of our workforce in foriegn
3) Our wages have decreased but our cost of living is up.
4) We have a income gap similar to third world countries
5) We have one of the most expansive public housing and its leased to us according to HDB agreement.
6) We cannot retire till minimum 65 as we will not have enough saving.
7)That GIC and Temasek has lost so much.
8) That key position are held by members of the same family or relatives.
9) we hang the most people
10) Our MPs are part-timers

Anonymous said...

Based on the views of the above anon, I sometimes wonder why the opposition parties do not want come together and form some kind of a coalition. In other countries, political parties have done that. Recently, we have seen Malaysia and Japan doing that.

Those who are in political science will probably come across many examples. I sometimes feel that maybe there is a conspiracy theory. : )

It is so logical for minor and insignificant entities to come together to fight a powerful juggernaut. I think there are many examples in life to attest to that. Maybe in Singapore, we have not reached that kind of threshold whereby we feel there is need to band together?

I do not support any political party. As humans, we are going to have our own vested self interests and make mistakes. That is why we must have a political system where people can check on each other and thus ensure greater transparency and accountability to the masses.

People checking themselves are pretty crappy and trusting people to do the right thing is ridiculous simply because we are humans. We are inter-dependent on each other to find faults, improve and remind ourselves that there are more than just ourselves in this life.

It is sad to know that Singaporeans do not see Potong Pasir and Hougang as examples of greater transparency and good governance, when compared with the previous administration or other ruling party wards We must also realise that these two estates are prime example of the democratic process; voters in other estates should now see that that world does not come to an end when opposition take over. People should realise that the PAP as opposition in these estate have to work extra hard to win back the seat. Don’t they recall much effort the government placed on the election campaign for these wards. Yet they failed because the people here realized that their MP was really working very hard for them, despite all the obstacles placed by the ruling party.
The same will occur if you have more opposition in Parliament. If you have a two party system, the government will actually be afraid to abuse power because they know that they will be kicked out of power the next election. Until that happens, we the people will forever be held hostage by the single party in power. So people for our own good, lets have more opposition in parliament come next election

lim said...

@anon 9/3/10 09:31

Agreed with you, one thing we should bear in mind is that the mps are elected by the people, so we the people should make sure that they are working for our interests. instead of their own selfish interests.

We need to "grow" the opposition.. If pap don't buck up, then out they go, likewise for the alternate party if it doesn't perform..

By denying any party a 2/3 majority in parliament, we can ensure that any policies will be thoroughly scrutinised and debated before passing, unlike the current "rubber stamping" we see with one party rule.

We are not consulated and not given the choice of opting out like the cpf life..

LKYcalledmeDAFT said...

Anon 9:31,

I agree with you on most points.

I believe an alternative opposition MP would be btter in our constituency simply because they have a lot more to prrof.

For the PAP MPs, complacency has set in. I do not know who my MPs are. I don't see their faces except during election. And even then, it is not their faces that I see but photos of them with their plastic smiles in large signboards placed near the roadsides instead.

I don't who my MPs are and they don't know who I am. Why do I bother to vote for them? Where is the personal touch?

I feel the opposition cannot proof themselves unless we give them chance. I'm sure many of young Singaporeans are desirous of ooportunities to proof our salt. The same goes for the opposition MPs.

I want someone to represent my views as I don't agree with the government ways as I think they're DAFT. Sounds familiar?

Same anon @ 1835

Personally, I do not understand or try to get too hung up about opposition as stated in my previous posting. i do not support very strongly any political party. I may be inclined to lean towards one, but the point and issue in Singapore are that our political culture or whatever is skewed and in my opinion distorted.

PAP started out as an opposition party. I am no political science student, but the idea of opposition parties to me is rather silly and may be perpetuated by the ruling political party.

Reading about the histories of other countries, all types of government actually boils down to one single purpose i.e. every citizen will stand to benefit and be protected from unjust practices or for the greater good of society.

My own non-expertise view on governance and peeve about the stereotypes on communism is that first of all, it is not evil as protrayed in the media in Singapore or other so called democratic countries. Communism is an ideology embraced in the hope of a more utopian society. Of course, the reason that Communism is not so popular or embraced presently because it does not allow the people to participate actively in the processes of a country which lead to absolute power, which lead to absolute corruption. It is a vicious cycle. Theoritically, if we are to get a group of truly honest, with integrity and capability to efficiently rule the country, the Communist way of governance will actually lead to a society where most of the social ills will eradicated.

However, pragmatically, it is difficult achievable. Basically, I feel that it boils down to human factors. Communism differs from monarchy in that blood lines are irrelevant in the passing of leadership. And the reason for monarchy as a form of governance to lose its prominence is also painfully obvious for all to see. It just will not sustain for the greater good of the society. Most countries that have monarchy as a form of governance have already more or less abolished it.

Singapore is in an unique situation. Power in the hands of the people, citizens is the only way to ensure a more equitable of running a country. Of course, not all people will see it that way. Just as I stated previously, humans are not infallible. We make mistakes and have our prejudices. We have our own loved ones to care about. We are selfish and sometimes blinded by many things. We are not an island and instead depended on one another for many things. Things that are not obvious, but integral for us to live our lives meaningfully and purposefully.

Anonymous said...

For that anon that says PAP is lesser of the two evils, it depends on one perspective. A Greek philosopher told this story thousand of years ago, All H's life, he had been told by the Elders not to face the opposite direction because the light would blind him and the cave he lived in was the best place he could be. He would just work accordingly and be contented with he was given. The light would also lead him to the outside world where he would not be able to survive. However, somehow he could not stand living in the dark cave. He could not imagine living the rest of his life that way. The darkness and space constraints stifled him.

Tired of the life he was leading, he decided to take a chance. He turned around and at first, he was stunned as the small ray of light blinded him. His first thought was that the Elders were correct. How he had not heeded their words. However, that light somehow revigorated him and stirred the curiosity in him. He opened his eyes once more and he could see a long narrow path of the cave. Ignoring the calls of his fellow peers, he followed the light and led himself out of the tunnel.

This story was obviously told with an agenda in mind. However, it is meaningful that the issues that were faced thousands of years ago are still relevant today. Just Socrates remarked about the education of youths and behaviour that they were getting worse by the generations. The sames issues are still relevant today.

Conclusion, is that humankind will always remain the same. Some intelligent and great men of the past, together with past events have convinced me that checks and balances, accountability and transparencies are the only ways to ensure that there is no abuse and the greater good of society can be served.

How come opposition up to now cannot

1. be united as one party?

2. have many credible candidates?

3. have their own respected and feared Mentor? Young or old doesn't matter.

4. contest all the seats?

If they still cannot by next election, then PAP by default will continue to have 98 or even 100% of the seats.

lim said...

Whether the oppositions are united or not is immaterial at this moment.. We just need to vote anybody other than pap..

Just ask yourself (use the cooling-off period if you have to),
- are you happy under pap rule?
- Do you foresee a bright future for yourself and your children if pap continues ruling for next 10, 20, 30 years?

If not, then it is time to do something NOW, and not wait for credible opposition, united opposition..

1. GRC boundaries drawn up at the last minutes

2. High deposit to stand for elections

3. GRCs

4. Ingenious way of creating intimate links between economy and government

5. Laws to create obstacles for free speech and other ways of forming creditable oppositions

6. Is there a Constitution?

7. Intimate links between judiciary and legislation though it can be argued once again as no proof

8. Climate of political fear because of Operation Coldstore and the other incident

I think other people can add on to the list. The playing field is not level in the first place and please do not bring in the argument that the dominating party has every right to unlevel the playing field.

It is just not right because the future of citizens is not a game whereby politicials can be unscrupulous to change the political system. The political system has been tweaked in the name of social representation or other bogus reasons to justify for it. Heck, even sports have the integrity to make sure games are fair and square and that corruption is minimised. You cannot prevent a referee from taking bribes, but there are systems in place to ensure that there is integrity in them. But in Singapore, pork barrel politices and other stuff...it is almost digusting.

you can only be effective in "checks and balances" if you have access to relevant data and information. the flow of information has been contained, limited and most importantly, filtered! in other words, what you don't see or know, it will impede your wisdom.

"The only fear is what we are seeing with the pap, no transparency, no accountability, so much so that even the 2 professors who warned against the foreign population policy were made to retract their statements.."

every party has their central manifestos, vision and goals. when they don't get along, you usually can't find the balance and often then not, will lead to bloody contention as seen all around us. in such a system, best to have a dominant howbeit a "benevolent" power to take charge - like in our case.

however, this power is neither hot nor cold. it is neither all bad nor all good either.

as a result, it is SPITTED OUT! understand?

I have to admit that I can't quite catch your drift..

>> "the flow of information has been contained, limited and most importantly, filtered!"

Well, under pap, this is indeed a common occurrence..
Why does TH needed to raise $ issuing bonds?
How much loses did TH/GIC sustained, and how much reserves do we have left?

So, the only option is to have a strong opposition in parliament, or an alternative party forming the govt to remove the obstacle to truth..

>> "best to have a dominant howbeit a "benevolent" power to take charge - like in our case."

Well, I don't mind a single party taking charge, provided it is able to have citizens' interest first, have accountability, be transparent..

How many honest mistakes, what to do, it happens during the past few years? What did singaporeans get to enjoy over the same period?

Means testing, cpf life, gst increases, etc, did we get a choice?

granted there are a lot of technical issues, certain sector of our people, are not happy with.

that has to do with power in balances

my view is, our political system or rather, a western import, will not be able to address this power in balances.

and hence, the opposition role, not only will they be ineffective( more like incompetent and so on and so forth), is not a long term solution.

in fact, one unlucky generation will bring all of us down!

>>"that has to do with power imbalances"

Which is what we are seeing currently, so we need to strive for a greater balance so that no single party can hold the nation hostage.. Currently, the oppositions in singapore are weak, but if we do nothing to encourage their growth, or give them a chance, then we have ourselves to blame when bad leadership in pap leads to a gloomy future for ourselves and our children..

I feel that there is nothing wrong with the western democracy system, it is definitely much better than an autocratic style..ilies

you accepted the current system because you failed to see its flaws.

you see, on the one hand, you agreed transparency is vital but on the other hand, you seem to think the opposition can pressure the powers that be to open up.

pls. i let others, who are in much better postion to furnish you with all the sordid details, to debunk you.

in any case transparency is only one of many other concerns

no point being transparent when you don't even know what to do with the "transparency". lol

This is almost like saying you go see doctor, doctor diagnosed you had cancer, but no point telling you since you would not know how to treat it..

I am going to start a list of issues that would have been challenged and discussed in Parliament if there was a strong opposition numbers in Parliament. I am also not too sure if our political system requires a two third majority to pass a bill or law. Can anyone comfirm.

1)The appointment to key position in GIC and Temasek.

2) The creation of new and additional political positions such as SM and MMS

3) The increase in fees(GST,ERP.S&C, levy etc)

4) MP & Mininister's pay increase

5) Accountability for lapses and loses

6) Changes to electoral system and boundaries.

7) Housing policy

8) Foriegn worker policy

I can;t help observing this trend. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

Not too long ago, our government worked vigorously to control the population. It was Operation Coldstore. The dirty word was communism and later on Marxism. And our government practised character assassination. There was no accountability and transparency then.

Then our government moved to bankrupting the opposition. Most educated and influential oppositions were bankrupted or have fled the country. Our government practised chracter assassination yet again. There was no accountability and transparency then.

Now, our government has turned their heads on us. Our government has called us, "daft". Our government has started labelling us as perpetual complainers. Our concerns are not addressed but our characters are being attacked. There was no accountability and transparency still.

I think we're fucked.

@ anon 10/3/10 16:24

yes our Constitution needs a 2/3 majority in Parliament to be amended ...a simple majority is needed for a party to form the govt- I'm not sure whether just a simple majority is needed to pass laws without requiring constitutional changes.

all this while PAP has carte blanche to push through all the legislations etc...

the advantage is the efficiency of a strong govt but we can see all the disadvantages which i shan't say further.

How come PAP is so strong?

And how come opposition cannot be strong?

Why so unfair one?

Anonymous said...

thats why where got democracy one

all bluff one, even opposition also bluff

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

SO TRUE. thank you for the excellent post. I especially think our ministers do not deserve such a high pay.

The PAP has absolute power in Govt.
But the Constitution was changed quite sometime to allow the President to check on them.
Unfortunately, the current one is a big disappointment compared to his predecessor. Thats was why the Govt ensured his election or more likey his 'selection 'twice.
I say we should do away with his Presidency and his 3.5mil salary
should be spent to help the more deserving citizens.

The Government selects a President to check itself. Only in SIN is there such an arrangement that's so out of the World(notm).

Here’s a graph showing influx of FTs vs Real Earnings of Singapore: http://i41.tinypic.com/ojo61l.jpg

You guys may be interested to know that the correlation coefficient for these 2 sets of data is -0.7 which is considered strongly negatively correlated. Meaning to say, if one set of values goes up, the other will come down.
