MM Lee's Eulogy...

"When he held a contrary view, he would challenge my decisions and make me re-examine the premises on which they were made. As a result, we reached better decisions for Singapore."
- MM Lee's Eulogy [Link]

I read all the eulogies for Dr. Goh but found this sentence by MM Lee most interesting. He talks about the importance of being challenged and questioned by Dr. Goh to force him to 're-examine the premises'. The result of Dr. Goh's contrarian view is the govt reaching 'better decisions for Singapore'.

Dr. Goh left the govt more than 20 years ago. So who was around to provide 'contrary views' and challenge MM Lee's and subsequent prime ministers' premises? You notice how long it takes for the govt to fix its birth control policies and adjust its foreign workers policies. It is done long after everyone knows something is wrong.

I was at the National Museum open house yesterday and there was an old clip of Dr. Goh and the Jurong Industrial Park. The park cost the govt $50M and there was tremendous fear among the decision makers (Dr. Goh and Hon Sui Sen) that the investment can go wrong and they would have to live with the consequence i.e. Jurong Industry Park would have been known as "Goh Folly" to the next generation ,,,,,,if it had failed he was ready to take responsibility and that would have been the end of his political career. $50M in those days was huge sum given that our entire reserves was only $400M. Today, the Singapore govt can lose a few billion here, tens of billions there and you don't hear of anyone taking responsibility for the loss. Perhaps "contrary views" and "challenges" to those big risky investment decisions would have resulted in better outcomes for Singapore.

Unfortunately he is the only person who has the ability and the balls to challenge LKY. Too bad he retired too early. But let us not be sad, as we now have LHL to challenge his dad.

GKS "retired"? or was he disgusted and so resigned the same year LKY installing his son as PM, as part of his plan to take SG for himself by purging the old guards to install loyal cronies?

I thought our Ex-President Ong challenged him even more! For whatever reason President Ong's challenge was not appreciated!

I have wondered what was GKS reaction when he heard about the $100 Billion loss by TH & GIC?

Maybe along the lines of "Mutherf**ker!! I hope they don't cut my monthly pension and my free A-Class treatment at SGH. Or refuse to treat me with the new fancy drugs for my illness that cost $20K per injection!"

Only Mrs Goh will know the truth I guess ... and that also goes for why he really retired in 1984.

Oh, and I think Mrs Goh is now only entitled to 1/3 or maybe 40% of the original pension.

But if her son and grandkids are as capable and as nice as I believe, then no problem for her.

Lucky,
I prefer to read in between the lines of MM Lee's eulogy.

What MM Lee meant to say is,

"Thanks so much Keng Swee, for taking a hike without making a fuss. I was actually tired of you arguing with me."

"While it was good to be stingy with spending money on the public, I was quite fedup looking at my pay and my monthly CPF statement."

"Without you around pal, its been easier to bond with my familee members, running Spore like a family business. And the best part pal, I am having so much fun at 87 getting everything my way."

"Sorry pal, it was better you than me in the box." hehe

Mr Lucky

Dr Goh was a Christian ... the kind u see as weak-minded fools.

How about u showing that you (& your fellow selfless atheists liberals) can do much better? Starting from the next election?

The reason why the pap of today is so different from the pap of 20 years ago is because there is no old guards like Dr Goh, Dr Toh and Mr Ong Pang Boon, to check on the excesses and heartlessness of Lee Kuan Yew. Lee Kuan Yew is also very pro-business. So Singaporeans got screwed left, right and centre.

Disagreements must never ever be displayed in public. This is cardinal
LKY & GKS & Rajaratnam always kept it behind closed doors.
Ong Teng Cheong decided to openly challenge ideas.. this was uncomfortable.

GKS has been described by many as a humble and frugal person and yet a visionary and decisive steersman.
Can you imagine what effect he had on others who were not "with" him?

In the pictorial tribute to him, he was heard sayin: " we dont care! we just do! "

Now.. thats a familiar line isn't it?

MOM foreign policy brings us nothing but distress. It is purely for business. We are left in a dog eat dog society. Being bullied at our own country.

It is sad and disheartening

frankly speaking, i don't give a damn. there are many things that they knew but few have spoken the truth.

What if the premise of the government is to claim that all the assets and reserves are built and made by it. And if it lost some of them, it is also its' loss and got nothing to do with the people ?

They made it and they have the right to splurge it; right ?

MM's eulogy was most uninteresting. Somehow, I have this feeling that he is praising himself than showing his tribute to Dr Goh Keng Swee. Notice there were so many "I" in his delivery. His self-centredness was very obvious. Same goes for his son, lack the touch in his 'speech'. Dhanabalan's eulogy was more about the man; GKS's mentorship, his down to earth dealing with fellow human being, his frugality (which is almost absent in the current batch of ministers), his passion to serve, his magnanimous spirit, his leadership, his grassrootness and many more.

Of course, nothing beats what GKS's grandson and grandniece had to say.

So instead of saying MM was delivery his eulogy, I would think it more appropriate he took this as an opportunity for proclaiming self-credit.

That was our MM. :-(

In Lee Kuan Yew's mind, this event may already be a first for him that he has not praised anyone to this extent on a single occasion, the obvious self-indulgence notwithstanding. So much so that the late GKS had to wait a few extra days just to have LKY's eulogy.

Alan Wong said...

When his time comes, this will be my Eulogy for him :

When anyone held a contrary view, you would challenge their decisions and would refuse to re-examine the premises on which they were made.

As a result, many people were either jailed, sued or had to leave the country. In other words, you were absolutely ruthless.

May your soul rot in hell.

Yea, MM Lee is Mao Tse Tung and GKS is Chou Eng Lai. It was Chou Eng Lai who is buried with honour not Mao Tze Tung. Today Mao is still working in his mousellum. We too have our cultural revolution where retirees no longer get his CPF fund but a trigger of a few hundreds per month and many others.....

In the so-called eulogy, LKY made rather disparaging remarks about GKS, e.g. "slow developer", "hopeless as a campaign orator". And he is SO afraid that people only give GKS credit and forget about LKY, so he has to phrase his words to remind everyone who's the big dog: "his tough policies **we together** formulated", "I became the Chairman",etc.

I like the sound of that.

Take it with a pinch of salt, guys. He was actually re-hearse-ing his own eulogy.

I am not interested in the Lees. Afterall he is just another tyrant.

I was interested in the ST 2 page write up of the 2nd wife. And I was perturbed.

Not sure, is it right for a Christian to divorce? What God put together...... Why is ST putting her up as a modern hero? Wasn't she just a home breaker - the 'other woman' if GKS was a lesser being? Would she not be made of a stronger fibre if she had said 'no'? What about the first wife who did not attend the funeral.
