Why the YOG will be a big success.....

Singapore hosts the inaugural YOG. Not much is known about how the rest of the world will take to this. Given that it comes just after the biggest and most spectacular sporting event in the last 4 years, World Cup 2010, some wonder if it is a little hard drum up the excitment for this event. When Singapore bidded for it, our leaders, given their extraordinariness and vision, must have factored in the timing of the event among other things. Whatever you think about this event, I tell you it will be a big success....and I'll tell you why.

There is alot at stake for the PAP govt to ensure that the event succeeds as it has put its reputation behind the event when they put in the bid to host it. Hosting events of this scale showcases the leadership and organisational skills of the establishment - we have MPs, Perm Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries and a BG (Res) in the organising committee[Link]. This event will impress the world with our globalised city - the modern infrastructure, tourist attractions, IRs etc.

You can see how determined the govt is to ensure its success. Insufficient budget of $104M? No problem quadruple it to $387M....just tell the public that the positive publicity about Singapore will more than justify this...Slow ticket sales? No problem get MoE to buy 80,000 tickets (to date 100,000 of the 250,000 tickets have been sold).

What am I getting at? See when something is important enough for the PAP govt, it will command the vast resources it has under its control to ensure its success be it people, time or money ...they will quickly move these resources to fix any problem that stands in the way quickly and efficiently to ensure success. The PAP govt effort in the YOG shows you how important the event is to the PAP leadership.

Cartoon by Joshua Chiang.[Online Citizen]

What about your problems - say, housing, transport & healthcare? What about the income gap and rising poverty problem in Singapore? The PAP govt seems to be willing to let these drag on and on - deny, debate, dither. You don't see any debate over the YOG $283M budget overrun. It shows you the priority this govt puts on problems that affect ordinary citizens ...versus the YOG. Your problems, your pain and your quality of life lets slowly debate about it and talk about how you can help yourself,, how you can get used to it, how Singapore is better than 100 impoverished third world countries so you ought not to complain, how the PAP govt has already done too much for you and ...it goes on and on. Lets get it clear - if you want the PAP govt solve your problems with a sense of urgency and get their priorities straigtened out and put the citizens ahead of their other interests, you better vote wisely and show them the blue dolpin fountain they want to put near your home as part of the next cycle of upgrading linked to your vote doesn't matter....all it does is make you forget your real problems for a while as they get larger and cause you more pain later on.

It's actually quite simple.

If it's a problem that money can solve, it's not a problem.

Parka,

...and which problem money can't solve?

I quote "say, housing, transport & healthcare? What about the income gap and rising poverty problem in Singapore?"

plus birthrate, apathy, Singaporeans complaining without giving thought, crowded MRT trains, etc.

It will take more than money to solve all those problems listed above.

If selling all the tickets means YOG is a success, then, it's very achievable. Just have MOE buy up the rest of the tickets, which I'm very sure they are more than capable of.

YOG is very important to the PAP. No doubt about it.

But there is another thing that is far more important, even a life and death matter for them. You guess it, yes it is the general elections(GE).

Can money also solve the "vote against PAP" problem? Yes of course. And it will be goodies. Maybe super goodies for super results!

So folks, just be patient and wait for it. Vote wisely?? Come on, come on, the folks will change their mind once they see goodies. Just like a man will get a erection when they see porno films or the real thing. Can't be helped, it's only natural.

And besides money goodies, another type of goodies but it is not for local peasants. It is the new citizenship goodies. These can also bring in the votes.

Poor opposition. I think they will have to be just contented with 9 NCMP goodies for them after the GE.

not to forget the annual NDP. Seriously it has been a pain in the ass for me for having the tax payers' money spent to propagate and glorify the pap.

Come GE, the voters should take whatever goodies from the pap and vote for the opposition.

Vote wiselee. Vote your best and favorite candidate into power, wealth and status so all your money problems can be truly heard and resolved
Vote wiselee to solve housing, transport and healthcare problems.
Vote wiselee to close the income gap.
Vote for a better life and future
Vote for changes, not $mall change.

Your entire life and future lies in your vote. Your entire life and future lies in the cushy seat of parliament. The more opposition you send to heaven the better assurance of solving all our social and economic problems.

" if you want the PAP govt solve your problems with a sense of urgency and get their priorities straigtened out and put the citizens ahead of their other interests, you better vote wisely"

Give them your vote, your blessings and your tithes for a one way ticket to heaven on earth.

If there is a will, there is a way, money notwithstanding. For YOG all is required is money and because there is the will, money is no object. Sadly, there is no will to improve the lives of ordinary peasants, but only the will to make it appear that Singapore is a 1st world country. For elites and FT's this is so but all ordinary peasants know that they are living in a 3rd world environment. This is a fact that the leaders seemed to be oblivious to. Throwing almost $400 million into this 13 day event is peanuts. Even if a monkey wants to represent my constituency, I will cast my vote for the monkey.

You'd understand what they do if you do a Cost-Benefit Analysis.

The problem with this methodology is that the benefits accrued under social programs are mostly intangible or hard to measure.

That is what you get when you run a country like a company.

As you know, its so important, two of the five polys here are giving 3 weeks off to students because of the YOG.

When it comes to the face of the PAP govt, no expenses will be spared.

If $387M still not enough, make it $700M then. Who's there to be accountable to ?

But if it is the livelihood of ordinary Singaporeans, it is 'You die your business'.

The 80K bought by MOE and distributed to the schools, trust me, students will be "asked" to purchase. Those who support and bought the tickets will be assured an "A" in the final exams. Pao Jiat.

Every five years or so, a golden opportunity opens up to any qualified singaporeans who wants a platform to make politically correct speeches so you won't forfeit a princely salary for basically not much changes or not at all.
From the slipper man to the son of the deceased bankrupted man, all can take a shot at the jackpot.
Who knows, you maybe the lucky one.

Rest assure that the yog garanti very well done and good one. So many singaporians work for frees and many money put in. Vivian and Sirluck will have many young pap members helping. No worries, yog garanti bagus.

Anonymous said...

Yes, just make sure they have goody bags to give away, like the NDP, which has always been a roaring success, year after year. I just wonder how it will turn out without the free tickets and goody bags?

Or, provide free tickets and transport to ferry people down to the YOG venue to provide the crowd numbers, like the PAP rallies. They even provide refreshments. In the old days, they even paid them overtime to do this.

It is only a matter of whether they want to make it look like a success or not.

I say look like, not actually a success.

LKY's legacy takes precedent over the interests of Singaporeans. If they need to throw $billions to shore up LKY's legacy, they will do it without any hesitation. However when it comes to interests of Singaporeans which do not tie in with those of the famiLEE, then u can wait till the cow comes home. However if Singaporeans interests are the same as that of the famiLEE then u can rest assured that it will be met promptly and in abundance.

Insufficient budget of $104M? No problem quadruple it to $387M....

Where does the additional $200M comes from.

By hiking the rent of a charity hospital from $1 to $1.7 million

I think we will be better off under the British government.

http://theonlinecitizen.com/2010/04/kwong-wai-shiu-%E2%80%93-100-years-old-but-will-it-survive/

Can spend more than $300 million for a stupid event but lack the political will to not take money from donors.

A Singapore Land Authority (SLA) spokesman said that it would depend on the outcome of discussions and consultations with MOH and other government agencies.

Earning $1 million less for them needs to have a lot of discussions but not enough money for YOG, spend another $200 million without bidding an eyelid.

The balance sheet of Kwong Wai Shiu must have looked attractive and it is easy to take money from it by simply hiking the rent to pay for YOG.

When you have pension scheme and free health care for life, it is better to be a yes man to ensure that you don't have to end up visiting the hospital as it is none of your business.

Anyway, haven't heard GMS trashing our homes for sometime already. Doesn't he want to be "lucky"? lOl

$387 million is A LOT OF MONEY to spend on an inconsequential event that isn't even going to bring in a fraction of the cost in receipts. You'd think they built several new buildings to host the event but no, most of the money is going to GLCs like Starhub and Singtel for non stop advertising and 'PAP connected' businesses and individuals.

It is rather disturbing to see the PAP govt approve away such massive budgets with such urgency, and in such opaque manner on how the funds are being spent.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget national servicemen are usually asked to help in major events. The time and cost are not taken into consideration.

Is part of the YOG budget ovewrrun being used to subsidise travel/accomodation expenses of competing contingents from "symbolic" countries so that they will send larger contingents to ensure "proper global" participation..

those in the hotel and airline trade should know....share share so that we the ordinary not so lucky citizens know the truth behind the escalation in costs.

Please stop complaining! To pump $$$ into event like YOG is right move if you understand the basic invest-return or cost-benefit principle since we have to run a country as an commercial corporation. And, more and more countries have recognised the need to run their countries in this way. Investing in YOG will surely bring Spore more benefits than giving $$$ to poor people.

Another related bur different topic - rebranding Spore has been debated according to the ST few days ago. This rebranding is also as important as any big event like YOG. Could Lucky Tan give some comments?

"Investing in YOG will surely bring Spore more benefits than giving $$$ to poor people."

As sure as Temasick's investments. What else is new? Any guarantee of more benefits or is it a gamble? In the 1990's an honours graduate's starting pay in the public and civil sector was higher than today in real terms. This is an example of all the benefits Singaporeans ought to enjoy but did not.

a country is a country and a commercial corporation is commerical corporation. let's not confused ourselves. anyway, i do not give a damn on YOG, who cares anyway?
as for hanging the flags during national day, who cares nowadays?
see yourself.

Every opportunity they have, the PAP govt sucked us dry.

For eg. TV licence fee, car radio licence fee they made us pay when it's free in so many other countries. Some more threaten with warrant of arrest if don't pay on time.

Then as first priority, they use our hard earned monies to pay sky-high salaries for themselves first. Then they follow up with many wasteful projects spending endlessly on imported sports talents, NDP parades, F1 and now YOG events, etc.

What kind of monster has our PAP govt turned into ?

Absolutely correct. Just heard from my JC1 daughter that they are forced to do up a banner for the YOG ... she's not interested, but "got no choice".

Parents in SIN have to protect their children from being misused, coerced, conned and lured by the schools to be 'mobilised to volunteer'.
The students themselves must also learn to be streetwise and have commonsense.

Anonymous said...

Haha ...

Some 100 over young newbies from Australia will be attending YOG. They think it is an excellent pratice session for their kids.

So glad it is not my CPF money they are enjoying. I collected mine some months ago.

I really do pity singaporeans.

Yup look at the Greeks up to their necks with more debt after their OLYMPICs! .... Not so cost benefit or faster turn around on the their ROIs after all.

Nutty thinking have there anon!

Reminds me of North Korea, where "attendees" are often "planted" at various events or locations(Christian churches, mass gatherings), etc. in order to give the illusion that there are many who're interested in the events. In actual fact, they attend because they're either forced to(potential punishment of forced labour or being instituted at concentration camps) or because they might be able to gain a couple of favours(more party/political connections, better housing, better pay, etc., etc.).

All in all, not too different from the situation for YOG. Except of course, Singapore prefers subtlety. Well, most of the times, of course. :)
