Beware the sweeteners.....

There is an important difference between pleasure and happiness and not knowing it often leads to misery. I had an acquaintance once who was a real nasty chap and those who worked with him long enough knew he was a backstabbing, selfish, miserly, lecherous and sometimes less than absolutely honest character. I was invited to his wedding and was quite surprised when I saw his bride - a stunning beauty much younger than himself. A few fellers at my table who were closer to him told me he only dated the girl, a graduate from one our local universities, for 6 months before the girl agreed to marriage. When he came over to my table for photo-taking, I asked him cheekily how he managed to "get such a beautiful girl". He laughed and said, "I'm damn good at dating". A few years later, I heard his marriage hit the rocks because his lecherous inclinations got the better of him. This is a cautionary tale about the important difference between someone treating you well just to get you to say "yes" to him and someone treating you well because he cares for you. The difference between pleasure and happiness is one lasts and the other doesn't. If you want a happy marriage that lasts, try not to do things when you date that you wouldn't do after you get married. It takes may take integrity to do this and people have a tendency to hide their uglier parts but a marriage counsellor once told me mismatched expectations are the main cause of unhappiness in a marriage.

A few months ago, SMRT CEO Saw said the frequency of trains cannot be increased further and that the trains have not reached "crush load". A few days ago, it was announced that the frequency of trains will be increased by simply upgrading the signalling system. These these signalling mechanisms have been in operation for years in Japan and Taiwan. The change in signalling system will raise capacity by 20%. Hmmm....problem solved? Very interesting. The property prices rising too fast? Nothing done for 2 years but cooling measures announced one day after National Day Rally and along with it the HDB will boost supply. How nice of them to be so considerate...a bit late but at least something is done. Singaporean men feeling bad about having to serve NS and reservist duties while their colleague from China who got to study in NUS/NTU free of charge on a Singapore govt scholarship don't have such obligations, lets give $9000 to NS men to narrow the divide. Not everyone is satisfied about it because those who have finished reservist obligations don't get anything. Don' t worry something will come your way - your estate will be upgraded with the nicest walkways in Singapore, beautiful blue dolphin fountains and they will throw in a sweet smelling rose garden....a place you where you can de-stress after paying all your bills. Too many foreigners, don't worry the PAP govt will moderate the influx and make sure "Singaporeans come first". So nice, so considerate and so caring of them......
.
Asked if the new housing measures were a response to ground sentiment that housing will be a hot topic in an upcoming election, Mr Mah said: "If you ask me whether it has got anything to do with the elections, the answer is yes. Everything has got to do with the elections."
- Today Online. 31 Aug 2010[Link] on the increase supply of flats.

.
What is important at this point in time is not what the govt says or does but why they are doing this. If they are just "courting" you for your vote, just like some men who behave their best, wine and dine you just to get you to say 'yes' to their marriage proposal, it is not going to last. If they are not doing it because they genuinely care about you, you will be in for an unhappy marriage and your misery can start as early as the morning after your wedding day. You should be wary...more wary when the man is extremely sweet and unusually generous because it is more likely they are acting and hiding their real intent and nature.
.
If the 2006 elections is anything to go by, the sweetening has only just started. More goodies will come your way - estate upgrading worth hundreds of millions, New Singapore Shares shoved into your pocket, more money for ComCare, higher pay for workers, .....just look at the good news gravy train before the 2006 elections.....a snapshot from my blog in 2006[Link]:

----------------------
The govt also threw in a fantastic budget in 2006 loaded with goodies[2006 Budget Goodies].
We all know what happened in the 4 years after the last elections when Singaporeans were courted with all these goodies. GST hikes, more foreign influx, minister pay hikes, means testing for hospital....and endless hikes for transport, utilities and public housing. The more goodies they give you, the nicer they treat you before the elections, the more pain will come after it. The nice and sweet disappear quickly once they have your vote. You're delighted because you will be getting $9000 for serving NS and some people are not too happy because they will be getting nothing. I tell you the $9000 matters little in the bigger scheme of things. Its like talking about the size of diamond on the ring the man gives you when he proposes....it is how he treats you after the wedding that matters in the long run.

Thank you for the caution, Lucky. If fellow Singaporeans continue to vote for the PAP even after reading your blog, then serves them right when they suffer later!

Fantastic post! I much prefer an accountable government than one than dishes out goodies.
The 9k subsidy for NS men is a joke.
Money from left pocket goes to right pocket.
Can only be used for education and housing..
But who operates the biggest tertiary institutions (NUS, NTU, SMU, the polys etc etc) and housing "company"?
The government.

Enough said.

Lucky, sometimes the bad news hit you with the good news. My wife and I received a total of 250 for GST package via the mail. In the mail also a bill to increase property tax by 300 so net loss of 50. Right pocket in 250 and left pocket out 300!

What Lucky said actually is also quite common sense lah.

But then common sense may not be so common.

That's why there is so much misery in this world, most of which is man made due to no common sense.

But sometimes whether got common sense or not also makes no difference.

That is when you have no choice or Hobson's choice.

I think we have to be careful when politicians say we are doing this or that for the poor. I remember the last GST rises, the PAP say we are doing this for the poor. The end result, till now the poor still poor. So many times alredi they play this trick.

About the signal system of MRT, they could be trading safety for shorter times. Just, today's newspaper showed that most car's accidents involved were front to back collision. The accidents could be avoided if driver could observed safe distance.

Most of us, even primary school kids knowed that the real problem is inadequate of capacities to transport substantial number of people and all the line were builded with the orientation toward the central area. Instead of building bypass line in new areas of Singapore, such as connecting Pasir Ris to Woodlands or Sembawang.

If there is a collision occurred or somebody jump down the track,it is like a major heart attack, by the time you use buses to alleviate and bypass the effected site, many people will be stranged and incoveniented for a long time.

Unless they could guarantee there would be zero collision with the new signal system, they should seriously thinking of new lines bypassing the Central city areas.

Hi, I am just an outside observer. The next Singapore GE will see the PAP win with the same majority as the lat GE. Why?

Answer below,

1. Fear. If you or any member of your family works for the govt, and you look for promotion, and with the number on your ballot paper, would you have the courage to vote for the opposition??

2. Sweeteners. Most Singaporeans are greedy. As long as they have a few $$$ thrown at them, they soon forget the pain of the last 4 years and kwai kwai vote for the one who offers the carrot.

3. Ignorance. A large portion of Singaporean have no idea about politics. They grumble and bitch but when it comes to voting in the GE they vote for the people on the big posters outside their HDB flat windows.

4. The new Singaporeans. Who do you think they will vote for?

Anonymous said...

The Sweeteners are like bear rally to trap the Carelessness, Ignorance and the Greedy. After the market crash, they feel the Pain and Regret and haunted by The Suffering.

Anonymous said...

the "sweetener" are like drugs which will make our citizens "remember nothing". this is like the movie Matrix, where the guy would take the "shortcut" to his own happiness, rather than seeing the bigger picture that change is necessary for the good of the country and our people.

It is unfortunate that fear is propagated in most Singaporeans...some people I know would rather void their votes than to vote for opposition.
& the propagation of fear does not occur only b4 the elections. My 2nd voting experience in 2006 was totally revolting. Some of my particulars (can't remember whether it was my full name or IC no. and the voting serial no.) was announced LOUDLY as I was making my vote..this was done to random voters. I was glad I stood my ground. In fact, I would be totally disgusted with myself if I were to waver because of such "threats".

My gut feel tells me that many S'poreans will fall for the sweeteners that PAP will be dishing out simply because life has become tougher for them and they will show their gratitude by voting in those PAP bastards again as history has shown that people tend to have a short memory. Yet I am also quietly optimistic that we may be reaching a turning point where S'poreans may now say enough is enough and let kick those bastards out of power!

Women now a days look at "talents" in a man. The man who wants to marry a sophisticated and educated lady must be able to prove he is capable of living up to her demands. Such as to provide for the family and most importantly, lead. Leading means to make hard decisions at times for the family.

I can go on and on. There are many reasons why a relationship turns sour after the honey moon period.

Sometimes, there is not viable and intelligent alternative which forces some couples to stay together despite her unhappiness.

Leadership is paramount here. But leadership without a proper framework of engagement is often the cause of death in many relationships.

Singapore Fable: Why some people choose Hell?
28 Nov 06

While walking down the street one day, an MP from the People's Action Party (PAP) is tragically hit by a truck and killed. His soul arrives in Heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the MP.

"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"There's no need! I want to be in Heaven," says the MP.

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules." And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator, the doors open, and he rides the elevator down, down, down. When the doors open again, the MP finds himself in the middle of a beautiful green golf course. In the distance is a club, and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in formal dress. They run to greet him, and they reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar.

Also present is the Devil, who is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that, before the MP realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up, up, and the door reopens in Heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

So 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing.

They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by, and St. Peter returns.

"Well, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now, you must choose where you want to spend eternity."

He reflects for a minute and then answers, "Well, I would never would have thought it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better satisfied in Hell."

So Saint Peter escorts him to the elevator, and down, down, down he goes into Hell. Now, the doors of the elevator open, and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. And it's hot, hot, hot, and the odor is just horrible. Sweltering hot. Hot and miserable. The Devil comes over to him and smoothly lays his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the MP. "The day before I was here, and there was a golf course and club, and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is is a wasteland full of garbage, and my friends look miserable."

The Devil looks at the MP, smiles, and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted for us."

Does anyone have anything constructive to offer to the Govt of the day? Perhaps if you feel so strongly about change, you should do something to effect it than just hide behind the internet and post comments and blog entries like that?

I'm sure some of you here walk the talk.... For those who don't, ask yourself - what are you going to do about whatever issue you raise here? If it stops here, then it's just useless complaining. And we would be the typical whiner, as so many had said of Singaporeans.

I'm sure the issues raised here are important to you, to us all. So let's DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT rather than just whine.

And if the Govt is doing such a bad job, can anyone tell me if our current opposition will do any better if they were voted into power? Do you have confidence? Or would it be better to effect change from within the present system?

The first thing the Opposition will do when they come to power is to do an audit. The audit will conclusively shatter the final myth that the PAP is not corrupt. There are many stories of suspected PAP corruption. They however cannot be said openly because of the threat of a defamation law suit. The audit will reveal this corruption and explain why so many polcies have failed in the last 10 years.

Remember also our Finance Minister once boasted how each poor family would have received a total subsidy of S$460K in their lifetime. Until now, nobody really know how they worked out this figure ?

Maybe our poor families should instead ask our govt to give each of them a free 3-room HDB flat which cost half the subsidy instead in lieu of the S$460K subsidy and save the difference to pay as additional bonuse for themselves.

If what our PAP Ministers claim is true, nobody should really be poor in Singapore ! Pigs can also fly.

It seems like the election is really around the corner! There are so many pro-PAP comments here compared with the previous posts. Even the 'neutral' ones are using the mythical propaganda question "Are you sure the opposition can do a better job?"
Okay, people of Singapore, here's class 101 on how the government works.
1. The day to day operations are really handled by the civil servants.
2. The ministers are there to oversee matters and think strategically (no need to have detailed knowledge of operational matters for a start).

Thus, in the event the opposition takes power, operations will proceed as usual (e.g. MRT trains still runs and water still flows when you open your tap), unless of course, some sore loser sabotages the operations.
As evidence of point 2, look at your list of ministers now - many were never in the Admin service when they joined politics. Ng EH was a doc, Vivian was a doc, GCT was an MD in NOL, Teo CH was an admiral, etc.

I hope that fellow Singaporeans will see through the smoke screen here. Good morning, Singapore!

Don't be daft. A lot of key appointment in civil and semi civil services are beholden to the powers. Once there is a change of power, the loyalty may most likely be superficial or even lost. The whole chain off command will be shaken and efficiency compromised from all levels.

The sins and mistakes of the past governances are now haunting and exacting punishments as well as making corrections where and when possible to allow reprieves wherever and whenever to those deserving. Be prepared and do the best one is able.

But as much as I would like to rid the earth of this soul-destroying book myself, this job has not been given to me or any other Christian. This job belongs to Jesus. Only He is worthy. And as such, the central hope and expectation of every prophet and apostle throughout the Bible is to eagerly await the "Day of the Lord," when the Messiah will return to execute vengeance, deliver justice and rid the world of all evil.

When the Messiah returns, He will rid the world not only of the Quran but also the collections of Haddith (Islam's other demonic source of sacred authority), Hitler's "Mein Kampf" (an equally anti-Semitic and racist book which is presently a best-seller in the moderate Islamic nation of Turkey), or Barack Obama's favorite textbooks: Karl Marx's "The Communist Manifesto," and Saul Alinsky's "Rules For Radicals." All of these books will be destroyed and thrown into the fire. And I'm looking forward to it.

Not easy to command respect from the intellectuals class.

For those rank & file, not unless they are willing to leave their current job voluntarily with the opportunity cost of their existing pay comparatively with what they can get in the private sector given their skillsets for most, assuming if they are not 'forced' to leave immediately.

Joel message is also probably directed at the below comment by anon above.

"I'm sure the issues raised here are important to you, to us all. So let's DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT rather than just whine."

Why bother to do anything? Wait for the "day of the Lord" to destroy evil leadership.
Let this message of "hate" spread to every generation, let them grow in the number(we have already hundreds of thousand here and still growing) awaiting "the day of the Lord" to kill every dissidents.

"Don't be daft. A lot of key appointment in civil and semi civil services are beholden to the powers. Once there is a change of power, the loyalty may most likely be superficial or even lost."

Dear Anon 17:36, you obviously still believe that the key appointment holders treasure LOYALTY. Would you be surprised if I tell you that they actually operate out of FEAR and SELFISH-AMBITION?? They tow the line because they want to climb the ladder and are afraid to lose what they have achieved so far. Good morning!

You naive daft sotong. Give some credit to the strongman. This guy knows how to pick the right talent, most of the time, for the RIGHT job.

In any military and business organization, not only money talks the loudest, you must be able to sell the "big picture".

Unfortunately, naive people think they can suppress these people with jurisdiction. You can't suppress a time bomb. You need to use the LAW to DIFFUSE the time bomb.

By yours words you shall be charged! They have been doing that to the dissidents.Do they have the guts to finish the job with the "hidden dragon"?

Or has the dragon infiltrated the legal system?

The outcome in this GE will be the last straw for many, how it unravels. Desperate measures by the PAP will reap the ultimate consequence...no quarter given even after the oldfart kicks the bucket.

I agree with observation by 'Rise and Shine' that the civil service will function normally should the opposition take over. Just a few changes at the top in the civil service will be enough to ensure things run smoothly, probably even better in terms of service to citizens.

It is no secret many will vie for the top positions and will be grateful if given the opportunity. There is no such thing as the top buggers in the civil service being indispensable. They know each other's job pretty well and you only have to take the useless PM as prime example to understand what I mean. LOL.

Therefore, go ahead and vote the opposition without fear.

This body of part time wrecking machine and part time milking charities machine will  not stop putting our world at risks until they see their prophecies, our wretched world, come to its violent end, fulfilled.

Imagine, a pastor of a flock of 50 members managed to rouse an army of a bloody faith, that has bases from every continent and countries on earth, to arms. What will this unpredictable SINGULAR yet fragmented into thousands of spasmodic and disconnected pieces of shattering religious body, each pieces capable of replicating the "god told me to do it" pastor, come up with next?

These are not people who will be honest about themselves or when looking at their bloodied hands, even though the offense was committed by one of their own, would  ever admit to the guilt and  shame their dogmas have caused because their doctrines absolves their kind of all condemnation.

For by grace will these people embrace our world to death do us part or when "rupture" comes. Do they give a hoot about what others think of them? Unless you are prepared to sacrifice your rationality, and even sanity, to join their chorus of karaoke singers every sunday and be a cheerful giver to their causes or to such a pastor as the above, your brutal appraiser of them will only fall on deaf ears.

They are, in short, a SINGULAR multi- faceted body of dangerous controversies waiting to explode.

And have we been harboring them  in the name of tolerance?

Well, good luck. I don't think you can forever conceal the true nature of a blood thirsty religious beast in the guise of a good Samaritan but is actually nothing but a pack of deceptive wolves.

hi Lucky,
Lately, it seems like there are a lot of comments here that are totally irrelevant (e.g. Anon 22:50). I suspect that these might be attempts to dilute attention to relevant comments or divert attention away from the real issues at hand. May I suggest deleting irrelevant comments so that readers would not have to sieve through rubbish to get to the relevant stuff please? Thank you.

We don't see these countries collapsing..

No country will collapse lah, its only the people that collapse or are too weak to do anything. Worry not, Singaporeans are better than any other races on earth, they will survive to lead the world. Many are consultants to multi-nationals, others are highly sought overseas and china, india, usa and almost all other countries are learning from sin. Any of the sin leaders can show you the proof or dig into the straits times archive, it has reported that the world has been learning from sin for the past many years.

It is precisely that we do not want to see our future generations collapsing that we need to vote pap out, so that we can let oppositions a chance to grow..

The govt of the day is supposed to serve the people.. If they don't perform or refuse to account for hiccups then we people can let another party to form the govt come next GE.. In this way, we can keep the govt on the toes, and ensure that whatever they do is clean, and for the good of the people, otherwise they will see their skeletons being exposed once they get voted out..

If we need to have SISIR to certify equipements, and those vehicle inspection centers to inspect and certify road worthiness of vehicles, etc, then I don't think anybody can argue with a CHECK-AND-BALANCE system for the govt (except for those who got lots more to lose)..

Anonymous said...

haha....

hoping to depend on the oppositions will be the mostest folishest wish.

See them fight lah.

lim said...

So are we supposed to depend on the NMPs then?

Anonymous said...

There is no choice, the winner is long known, you know who.

But, dont depend on them to provide anything positive lah, they will bring singaporeans down to earth whilst they party on as usual.

You want to survive, depend on nobody but yourself.

lim said...

>>"You want to survive, depend on nobody but yourself."

Then essentially, it makes no difference whether pap rules or opposition rules, we just depends on ourselves.. And I believe most of us are actually depending on ourselves, for our finances, our health, etc..

My choice will still be for opposition, like I say, I still want checks and balance..

I think the main objective for the $9000 is more toward personal agenda then nation agenda. By increasing Government Spending will increase the GDP and eventually increase the bonus of the minister.

I think it's not healthy for a government to tie minister salary and bonus with GDP, because they can simply just increase fiscal policy for personal agenda then nation agenda. Basically I think the Government is going toward the wrong direction for growth.
