When the govt decided to build the casinos, we were told that it will keep problem gambling under control, the purpose of the casinos was to create jobs for Singaporeans and attract foreign gamblers. None of these promises were kept. If you visit the casinos, you will find that most of the workers there are foreigners. Even if jobs were created for Singaporeans, many of the jobs are low-paying jobs with poor benefits (read here about labor problems at MBS casinos : Link Link). The clear winners are Genting which is on track to make more than $1B in profits this year from RWS and Sands which will make more in Singapore than in Vegas. What Singaporeans get in return after then initial construction boost are broken families, crime, lousy jobs (if not given to foreigners) and more suicides.

PAPies actions now are governed by 2 principles:
1. You die none of my business.
2. You die faster better, so I can import more cheaper, younger & faster foreigners.

You will notice that all corporate, income, withholding and property taxes in Singapore supply less than 50% of our budget. Most of the rest comes from crap like GST, parking fees, foreign worker levy, etc.
n contrast, USA draws over 90% of government receipts from three main areas: corporate, income and withholding.
UK has a similar thing to Singapore, VAT. But in UK, government draws 65% of its budget from Corporate, Income, Withholding (National Insurance), Council (property) taxes, inheritance, capital gains taxes.
The conclusion I can get is that Singapore has a far more regressive tax structure than UK or US. Government won't necessarily get richer if the GDP rises. It gets richer if it increases ERP. So Singapore government's monies don't come from an improving economy but by increasing cost of living for Singaporeans.
If you get rid of the additional taxes and hidden fees in Singapore that are not replicated elsewhere, PAP will be facing a gigantic budget shortage.
Singapore now has 2x the population from the 1980s, and a far heavier, far more expensive state sector. By using money to buy people, they locked themselves into a system where the state must be able to reward the cronies more and more. (Can you imagine a legitimate writer producing the trash of Chua sisters?) But government expenditures cannot rise without increasing the ERP/COE/GST. So anything happens, Singaporeans must pay more.
I keep hearing from pro-PAP people that 'fan dui dang cannot do do anything'. I think to myself: with this shitty system, what can opposition do even if they won 99% of votes? CSJ is smart, but neither he nor LKY (nor any nobel prizewinner in econs) are smart enough to engineer a painless transition to a more normal economy.

For a miserable S$1500 per month that a groupier receives during their 6-month training, they are bound by a further 12-month contract that pays only S$1800 per month; assigned to work in any of the 3 shifts and have to pay compensation if they quit within the year.
On top of that, they have to accept being assigned to work in the smoking areas of the casino and exposed to the worst health hazard in their working lifes.
