The one really unavoidable hard truth....

Picture taken from ALVINOLOGY[Link]. It is a little morbid but if you use the Google auto-search suggestion for "When will", the 1st one on the list is when will the great man leave us, Google's autosearch suggestion is based on the frequency of search phrases. Apparently, the one about MM Lee is the most frequently asked question by Singaporeans. I do not wish our MM ill although I disagree with many of his ideas.

If you want the cold scientific answer to this question, it can be found in an actuarial life table[Link]. The quick way to work out the probabilies is to look at collumn 3. Column 3 shows the number of people still living starting with 100,000. When you're at age 87, 24000 people will be left. When you get to age 92, only 10,000 remain i.e. more than half the men who make it to 87 will not get to 92. When a man age 87, you have roughly a 13% chance of going the next year and that rises with every year.

MM Lee has worked very hard all his life. Whether you agree with him or not, his impact on our lives has been great. Although he once said he will rise from the grave [lLink] if something goes wrong with Singapore, it is time we start learning to live life without him around simply because he cannot be around forever....and this is the one cold hard truth that cannot be avoided.

once he mati, singapore will become chaotic.

I think if he is not around, life will still be as usual lah. As long as talented and capable people can continue to make money.

And if they can make lots of money, why would they want to be in opposition?

So the opposition will still be weak lah, right or not?

Depends on how PAP fiddle with the system after LKY died.

Anonymous said...

the fact is the new team of papayas know nothing about poverty. most are scholars so they have developed some kind of sickness due to lack of childhood play. they like to play with people well being as an enjoyable pastime.

Life still goes around. No nation sink whenever a dictator dies, on the contrary, they went on to prosper more.

The opposition is weak is another lies by PAP. During 1950s, isn't the PAP yet another "weak" opposition?

People once think they cannot live without great leaders like Stalin, Mao...etc. Its so pathetic to see Singaporean having such mentality as well.

Amused said...

Perhaps someone has been making this query repeatedly to move it up to the top spot? It may be easy to "trick" google into promoting uncommon search queries.

But if many Singaporeans have made similar queries, it should really worry PAP (and upset the old man of course!)

Google proabably has safeguards to prevent people from manipulating the rank of the search results and suggestions for search. It probably has the means to detect repeated requests from the same machine/person to manipulate the stats.

MM Lee Kuan Yew is a very hard working man who had worked for the sakes of people and Sin. Such diligent and caring people live very looong as they are well liked and loved with most citizens wishing and praying for them to live long. He will contest in the coming election and surely he will win and continue to care for his people.
May he live long looong

Good riddence to this stinking pile of 87 year old scum! Die scum, DIE!

Anonymous said...

His death will rejuvenate the country. This country is dying under his 40 years of oppressive rule.

He should die for the people's sake if he so dearly love Singapore.

Once he die, those filthy bastards which he invited over as foreign talents will run road even before his coffin is closed.

Thereafter, Singaporeans raise their heads high up again and rise from the ashes. We did it years ago and can easily do so again, and we should be smarter then.

I used to think that he was doing things for the good of our people, but over the last 20 years I started to see that he was doing things for his own legacy and his family, and those who managed to get closer to him.

Whatever it is, whether he is doing things for Singaporeans or for himself, I think he has over-lived his usefulness and should not be getting a salary of more than $3.5 million a year as a MM.

He should have been rewarded sufficiently, over the last 40 years, from many avenues and sources of tangible and intangible assets, rewards, renumerations, etc.

It is time that he should be doing things without being paid or just a token of S$1 per year (i.e. if he is sincere enough).

Anyway, his death will be a welcome news to some but of no impact to many, because people are expecting him to die any time once he had passed the 85-year-old mark. Moreover, his wife has already died - so he will be next in line.

Well, the great man had proclaimed that he would rather be feared than loved, that if he was not feared he was nothing. His wish has been granted. Those who fear him can't wait for him to die. He must be very happy knowing there are so many of them.

Amused said...

Had we been paying him $3.5m for the past 50 years, he would have gotten $175m. If you include the other members of the family, it could have been half a BILLON dollar!

This pay scale stinks to high heaven. It should be put to a vote in the next election. Maybe this is why so many people want to know when he will "quit."

anon 15/2/11 12:57,
yes, it matters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will be saving $4,000,000 in salary AND another $3,000,000 in pension, BOTH of which he receives SIMULTANEOUSLY, the latter since he was 55 years old which means for more than 30 years, he has been receiving a pension even though he has not retired!!!!

That's a saving of $7,000,000 per year. It matters a lot!

Capitalism is the economic model that Singapore has adopted. It has served well.

We eat siow loong pau
We wager on horses
We have expensive cars
We nice condos
We have expressways
We have fast internet service

Many of these things are absent from other countries or not reliable.

Can our current situation be the product of one man?

Did you not run up Peng kang hill?
Did you experience technical school streaming?

There are others who are equally influential in our midst.. they remain unseen, unheard.. these are the ones who have given you and I misery.. one man is just a lightning rod to divert attention.

In every organisation, there will always be key personnel.. without them the policies and directions cannot move.

Identify them, expose them...
.. these are the ones who moved the goal posts.. CPF, SAF, Football, SGX, SIA,.. these are the ones that said you are incompetent and are too old to work.

It is a nest that contains all things Machiavelli.

Alas! they cannot be found.. because the lightning rod will capture all and render all to impotence..
That is why we remain where we are every 5 years....

Think about it. Think

Anonymous said...

The first thing that should happen is to allow CPF to be drawn upon at 55 ( 25% ) and at 65 (50%).. thereafter leaving behind 25% for old age.. with further subsidies from the Treasury.

AS for the wealthy.. ie those having annual incomes above $200,000, they should be taxed 35%.. as such they do not have to contibute to CPF.

20% have the wealth, 80% supports them..

Actually, I think life still goes on after MM passes on. I dont wish him ill, even though I disagree with a lot of his policies & ideas. Unless he's a Sir Alex Ferguson or something, then it's a different story. Look, they thought no one will be good enough to replace Sir Matt too. Yes, no doubt MM has done a lot for us, but looking at it now, how many of his policies are really good for the 21st century? I do feel Stop At Two & Smart Parents=Smart Kids are totally wrong! It just makes me wonder if the next generation will remember MM as the hero or villian 20 years from now.

Does anyone know how the pension scheme work here in SG? Which select group are entitled to it, and from what age? What is the cost of that maintenance per person = cost to nation? I know some retired teachers who are in their 70s are still on their medical pension but once they are gone, the pension stop and that means their spouse dont get to enjoy it too.

Since MM Lee is not retired, then he really should not be getting it. Unless we are talking about health coverage plan only. And someone had a good point about if he's withdrawing such a high salary per month why would he need to be on an old colonial pension? It is just grossly obscene.

In a german MNC I used to work for, the global CEO is not allowed to exceed a salary that's 10x the pay of a janitor in the company. So the Janitor in the company draws a $3000/mth minimum wage, his pay cannot be more than $30,000/mth. So why does my government tag their payscale to American MNC and not European ones instead to set a good leadership example?

Catherine Lim in her blog & article on ST talked about SM Lee Conviction vs PM Lee Consensus governance is somewhat misconstrued.

Personally, I don't see our present government as a Consensus building team. Unless from within the Party, maybe that is true. But from the ground up, from the citizens' pov , that is grossly not the case. There is hardly a Consultative approach as much as this generation would like to see more of. Instead, it has deteriorated into a "Transactional" relationship with its people.

Did I read it correctly?

Has anyone wondered why estate duty is conveniently discontinued in Singapore 2 or 3 years ago?

Picture this, if this law is existed here, when someone’s wife past away last year would not only be taxed but would also be scrutinized by the IRA or the opposition! You can imagine the figures that we would have seen. I think even Mr. Lee Kai Seng in HK would not be able to compete with that sort of fortune.

In Egypt even after the strongman who ruled for 30 years was overthrown, no alternative seem to emerge. And now still very uncertain and chaotic. For better or worse, still not clear.

It seems in many countries, when there is strongman rule, there are no alternative emerging, during or even after end of his rule.

So the choice is not always good. More like choosing the lesser of 2 evils.

Most people think that if you were going to risk the unknown at all, you would do so when the known is terrible. But, no, truth is even when the familiar is satanic, we are told we're better off where we are.

It is like saying - it is better to stay with the demon you know 'something' about, so at least you are prepared for his more devious schemes. But what if the choice is between the known devil and the unknown stranger? There is a risk, but in such cases, isn't knowing what you're leaving behind all the more reason to try something new?

It is one thing to dance with the devil at Hades Ball, quite another to bop with Beelzebub when saints and mortals sit idly by.
