PAP is running an incoherent campaign....

MM Lee said something quite bizarre yesterday and Straits Times put it on the front page headlines anyway:

"Solution to rising costs is to grow economy.." - MM Lee, Sunday Times headlines 1 May 2011.

I suggest you read the  article yourself. He said that with economic growth the govt can give out "grow and share" packages:

"After the economic crisis, the economy grew by 14.4%, so we can have the cash to give out Grow and Share package. Without that, there is very little to share " - MM Lee.

Thats it. Grow and share packages given out is the govt solution to rising costs. We know that in the past decade, rising prices come when the economy grows strongly.  Because wealth is unequally distributed, most of the GDP growth goes to corporate profits and the richest individuals. However, we see cost of living rise rapidly in the past few cycles during which the economy grew. In 2007 we saw our economy overheating due to economic growth everything from rice to office rentals escalated that year. The only time when prices fall is during economic slowdown. Giving the poorest Singaporeans $800 once every 5 years is not going to solve their cost of living problems. When you compare what the MM said with relatively simple but effective ideas from the Opposition like removing GST from essential items and medical bills, you wonder what is going on in the PAP.

Yesterday, Mah Bow Tan angered people again by saying this:

"Length of loan is not the issue" - Mah Bow Tan[Link]

Yes, taking up 30 year loans to own public housing is not an issue. Emptying your CPF contributions for 30 years is not an issue. Can someone tell me what is wrong with Mah Bow Tan these days? Is he trying to lose the elections and retire? His still insists that HDB is affordable and he gave examples that are mathematically questionable[Read Leong Sze Hian] that contradicts the experience of most young couples looking for flats....is he trying to build up their determination to vote against him? What he is doing just does not make sense. A better strategy would be to simply say that the cooling measure are in place and more will be introduced if the existing ones don't work - this message would be more credible since the govt did try to do something to cool the market.

Then we have Goh Chok Tong. After saying a few strange things like ministers should serve 2 terms, which means the PAP has to eject something like 60% of thei ministers this elections, he now attacks the quality of his own former principle private secretary, Tan Jee Say[Link]. This is not only bad politics but really what is he trying to say? There are many PAP candidates whose academic and career accomplishments are no where close to Tan Jee Say's and Goh Chok Tong has a really weak female candidate in his own GRC team so is he suggesting they are all not good enough to be MPs?  After Goh Chok Tong declared "Lets have a clean fight"[Link],  Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan quickly sunk into the gutter with personal attacks on SDP's Vincent wijeysingha.

Much of the PAP campaign is fear mongering, threats and exaggeration of their own importance to Singapore. Nobody wants to attend its rallies to hear these negative messages except old folks who are given free food, drinks and transport to turn up. The PAP has been depending on its upgrading pork barrel and propaganda  to get votes and has lost its ability to campaign.  Its a good thing for the PAP that the campaign period is only 10 days because at the rate they are losing votes, we will end up with a new govt if this period is any longer.

A lot of fear-mongering by PAP. It appears they are on the defensive for the 1st time in a long time. Reminds me of the McCain-Palin campaign in the US 2 years ago. Obama side won by presenting a picture of hope and moving forward. Politicians can refute wrongful accusations and attacks on them but the overall message should be uplifting for listeners in the country. Afterall, everyone hopes for a better next 5 years.

Can the opposition please cross campaign to show they are united and able to work together as suggested by theowlcritic.

I am shocked to learn that the SIN government lead by cunning MM Lee is getting ridiculous and destructive nowadays. You have govt and ministers that totally disregard the citizens and try to hoodwink the nation with out-of-this-world nonsense and making the fool out of hardworking citizens. Now I seriously doubt that we have anything good remains in the reserve. We must replace this govt, and there is no doubt about it. PAP is getting so desperate now that all kind of fox's tails are revealing that it is totally unbelievable and unbecoming. I fear for the future of Singaporeans under this bunch of scam govt if they continue to rule.

In business, powerful corporations eventually succumb to young challengers with better ideas. (e.g. IBM – Microsoft – Google – Facebook?)

PAP has become out of touch in the past decade. The opposition now has new and better ideas to bring the country forward. The superior qualification of the opposition candidates already tell you as much.

Vote wisely. Vote Opposition.

Youe are right ! The PAP leadership seem lost in the world of their own.
Whether it was the MM making veiled threats or our Mr Mah clingling again to his affordability model, I must wonder if they need some psychiatric help.
Dr Ang of the SDP may want to physcho analysis their statements. No ?
Sad , warped logic from the senior & not so junior runks of the once All-knowning PAP. What went wrong ?

Sad thing is that, there are daft Singaporeans who prefers a 1st world estate and 3rd parliament.
They prefer to vote for the familiar 'devil' than the unfamiliar one. I guess they seems to miss the whole point.

ME:

Nono, they cannot hold a rally together. I heard it is against the rule.

There is a real danger of PAP getting a clean sweep in 2011 against all odds because the oppostion have gone for broke this time. If this happens, I see the PAP becoming as right-wing as the Nazis over the next 5 years because their internal voice of dissent would also be stifled by such a mandate for continuation of current policies.

"Length of loan is not the issue"

Huh ?????? Will they or any financial institution allow us to stretch our loan to 70 to 100 years, assuming the institutions are still around themselves to collect it.

Mah has learnt to speak half truths. He is continuing to play this role because his pay masters doesn't really know the details of the hdb policies and they have given it to him to take care of everything. So, he is persisting to paint the picture that to take a 30-year loan is not an issue. In fact, it is affordable to pay half a million (including interests) to rent your hdb flat for 99 years, in many cases, less than 80 years, as 40% of housing transactions in Singapore are of resale flats.

The system is flawed.

Where in this world do you see a government stepping in to introduce cooling measures for their people's public housing marlet?

The international leaders in this know what is going on and they're laughing at our daftness.

It's a common propaganda technique lah guys.

Keeping saying the same untruths over and over again. Sooner or later, even a lie would be taken as the status quo truth.

It's politics, guys. Not public service. Parliament has been corporatised. Parliament@Singapore.Inc

Cheers!

Please cross campaign to show the opposition are united in the Singaporeans' Singapore cause!

Make mention of other parties good gesture and you know what we mean...

You need to rouse a larger audience that would spread the message not just at party level but at an OPPOSITION level.

That way, you will win big this 7 May.

Keep up the good work!

I'm heartened to see that the PAP are also open to more voices and opposition in parliament. This is good news for everyone including the PAP.

Dear Mr Lucky Tan,

"Mr Tan told MediaCorp during a Sunday morning walkabout at the Empress Road market that it was never his mission in life to remain in public service and that, after five years, he resigned with Mr Goh's blessings."

I see it in two ways. One, GCT wants to wriggle that statement out from Mr Jay. He wanted Mr Tay to declare that: "it was never his mission in life to remain in public service..."

So, my question would be. Then why is he contesting for a public service position now in this election?

Can you see this point?

I can.

So, what GCT did was brilliant. He gave Tay a bait. And he took it.

Now, Mr Tay needs to clarify to observers such as myself the above.

Otherwise, I will cast my vote to PAP, in 5 days's time.

Here's your answer.

Poor Jay! What they did to him is wrong.

@Anonymous 2/5/11 12:23,

Let's face it. You are a hardcore PAP supporter anymore. To vote PAP over this personal issue reveals how willing you are to overlook the dismal ruling record of the PAP for the past five years.

It's okay. My vote for the NSP will cancel yours for the PAP.

As far as it concerns me, what the PAP is doing is just character assassination. That was what they tried doing with Dr Vincent Wijey, with Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan's gutter words and questions, and his refusal to answer back to the SDP's questions.

Anonymous said...

Could we have powerpoint presentations at rallies? Could the opposition use charts and graphs to explain rather than speeches? Would this be allowed?

Not all voters are auditorially inclined? Most are visual learners.

Tan Jay See can easily say, "Goh CT was doing ok then, so no problem if he decides to leave for the private sector. but sadly, little did I realise he was warming the seat for spineless Loong, now see the mess the trio has created! how can i pretend everything is fine and do nothing about it. imagine all the good work of Goh KS and that of the old guards going down the drain."

as you can see, Tan JS can easily embarass Goh but he chose not to.

i say to you "nice try but not good enough, now run along to your PAP master, he will still you pat on the head"...LOL

What dismal records? PAP brings you growth, growth and growth dividends.

Casinos bring jobs. Even though I am Catholic, I also support the casinos.

Don't bluff yourself. PAP is good to you.

Anonymous said...

I am a FT and I will move out of Singapore if there are opposition in the Parliament.

So, Singpore, vote wisely.

I guarantee you people jobs, u know.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, 10 to 20% of foreigners create 80 to 90% of jobs. What do the other 80 to 90% of foreigners do here? Having holidays?

Just go back home. We don't need jobs created by you, because they are taken up by your countrymen.

MM Lee is senile, MBT is dumb, GCT is crazy. Maybe they tried to anger the voters so they can go for early retirement after getting large sum of monies from the people pockets. The last man in pap will have to answer for all the wrongs committed by pap all these years.

I hate to say that if you are dodo, talking about this bait possibility ? If you are patriotic and determine that you want to do something for people , will you not do something to speak up for people and fight injustice of PAP by joining opp party ?

Right now, I am working and will not touch gun again after army. Does that mean that if there is war in Singapore, I will not use gun ?

Use your head not your dick to think !

A colleague told me this morning that she is voting for pap. I asked her to reconsider for the future of her children and children's children. What for, the single parent asked me. I just got money from pap and savings on my pub bill.

I told her if money is all she wanted, better vote opposition who promised giving even more money if they win. If they do not but garnered more votes, pap will definitely have to give more money next round.

I can't see anyone doing anything better than voting for opposition this time round whatever you are hopping to gain!

Anonymous said...

All governments fall in due time. Pap's days are numbered. Just take a look at what is happening in the middle east. Singapore, your boat has just come in!

Also I like to tell FT who threatened to leave Singapore when an opposition is elected into parliament to start packing his bags. And if he didn't leave when more than one opposition is elected, we don't just have a non-Singaporean sucking off our land but a dishonest loud mouth at that. We have deadbeats already. Don't need another.

The campaign has honestly seemed to deteriorate from threats, mudslinging and character assassination, and then now onto cajoling and attempted "soft" persuasion. Wasn't it MP and Health minister Khaw Boon Wan who told the attendees at the rally in his contested GRC "not to get agitated and vote in anger", and that if they "have any grouses against the government, they can talk amicably instead of ruining the country's government or operation" (his words in Chinese were somewhat to that effect when put into translation). The rhetoric sounds really vague to me. Does he even think that Singaporeans are voting to ruin the country or spoil the way things run? That kind of implies we are not even capable of thinking for ourselves what we want for governance. We are capable enough of deciding for ourselves who to vote for.
