Dr. Lim Hock Siew challenges Tony Tan

If you look at the video in the previous posting, the young lady from human rights group, MARUAH was asking the presidential candidates a very specific question - whether they think the arrest of alleged Marxist Conspirators in 1987 was justified. Tony Tan went on to answer her question by explaining the dangers of terrorism as if the ISA has been primarily used against terrorists. Lim Hock Siew speaking at a memorial for Tan Jin Quee challenges Tony Tan to prove that he was a terrorit and those arrested in Operation Coldstore and Operation Spectrum were terrorists. He also challenge the govt to form a board of inquiry to look into the past arrests and human rights abuses of the ISA.

We don't expect the PAP to take up any of Lim Hock Siew's challenges because the outcomes will likely not be i favorable to them. We don't expect the PAP to apologise to these detainees for ill treatment as it will amount to an admission that they have violated their human rights. The PAP govt can do itself a favor by reviewing the ISA and replacing it with an anti-terrorism act that is more suited for the threats of today, Retaining the ISA shows that they are unable to break free from an authoritarian past that younger Singaporeans find hard to accept.

Dear Lucky,

Thank you for your post.

I agree with you that a commission of inquiry should be set up to investigate the arrests be it in the 60's, 80's or whenever. Reparations will have to be made if any wrong doing can be proved.

What to do with those who were responsible for unjust detentions? In order to get to the truth, perhaps some kind of amnesty should be offered. I dont know if financial reparations will be enough to satisfy those who were unjustly detained.

As long as KY is alive, it is highly unlikely that a commission will be set up to investigate abuses of the ISA. Dr Lim Hock Siew however is right. The ideal would be for Kuan Yew to defend himself and state his case before any commission.

The good news however is that wrongful detentions of political opponents in the past is not going to disappear. There are enough young people in society who will lobby for answers until something is done. Good for them.

Dear Lucky,

Sorry, for suggesting that you asked for a commission of inquiry to investigate ISA detentions. You did not. It was Dr Lim who wanted a commission to be set up.

The facts are:
1. Singapore has the OSA to ensure nothing is disclosed to the public for their own good.
2. Singapore still retains ISA to ensure security of the country ruled by the current party.
3. The current ruler is not prepared to give up power.
4. The EP is designed to ensure no alternative government is viable.
5. LKY is still alive.
6. Majority of Singaporeans (at least 60%) are still daft and ignorant.

First world countries all have their official documents opened to the public after 50 years so as to maintain accountability and transparency and hence fairness and equality of their society. I personally doubt Singapore can advance to that stage and hence it is still a far distance to be a real first world country.

Reminds me of kid's fights. Both waiting for the other to throw the first punch or be responsible for initiating the brawl. But one spoiling for a fight might try to provoke the party to hit. The other party might not take the bait.
So I suggest, if this kid felt strongly the other party is in the wrong, why not go ahead and sue instead of flexing his old biceps with his supporters cheering on the side?
Or perhaps, kids will always be kids?

isa is a good tool to be used for some people who are very difficult to nail down such as those druglords, human traffickers, arm dealers in some countries like south america. without isa, singapore probably would not enjoy high employment, political stability and high growth. many foreigners including those in us and europe envy singaporeans cos singaporeans can find jobs easily.

.................................

The recent (heated) exchanges between Tony and his competitor have unwittingly emphasize the importance of choosing an independent President.

The non pap candidates could just capitalise on this if they have their thinking cap on.

What poppycock!!! Name one instance in the last 50 years that the ISA had been used on drug lords, human traffickers and arms dealers.

And y should the response be restricted to suing.

You do not fight head on with a school bully much bigger than your size or resource.

Fast forward to the present context, flexing old biceps with supporters cheering on the side & waiting to pounce if the bait is taken is a good way to make fun while winning support & opinion w/o needing to do much except ....by flexing old biceps.

If the govt has done unjustifiable acts to the detainees, there should be apologies and compensation. This is called ping fan 平反.

It is nothing to be ashame of and promise not to repeat such acts.

The eyes of Singaporeans are sharp and will only get sharper.

ISA or ISD is just a agency same as the old days of Kempetai during Japan occupation or the secret agents KMT used in China after post WW2.

What TT defends of ISA, is just craps. To defences from Terrorist, which is a external treads, we can always have a seperate agency to look after this matter and not tied with internal politic opponents. It is confusing and mis-leading. In fact, our gov. defends this so call terrorist with by working with other countries. Do we have to co-operate or discuss internal matters with Malaysia? M Salemat ....

There will never be any outcome of ISA unless we have more than 1/3 of opp MP seating in parliment.
That is the forces we need to make our gov own up mistake and not hid mistake given there is no other state media who will report the Hard truths..
