The People of Hougang stand firm!

Despite the attempts at character assassination. ...despite the estate upgrading carrots....despite the biased mainstream paper coverage....despite sending in the PAP big guns, the PM & DPM, to campaign for their candidate...the people of Hougang did not waver.

In 1991 when the Hougang people decided to vote for an opposition representative,  they knew something the rest of Singapore did not know and saw something the rest of us could not see. 21 years ago, before the Internet was widely used, before bloggers and the social media started to pierce holes in our blindfolds so that we could see through the propaganda, the people in this small section of Singapore had already seen a different vision for the country from the rest of us. When you  see this vision and start walking towards it, you will not be distracted by the little potholes, the little dirty tricks played by unethical politicians, their seductive promises and material temptations. For 21 years, the people of Hougang have continued on this long journey even when they were made to suffer deprivation and threats.

This is a long journey towards a democratic Singapore. Without democracy, there will be no future for our children for we will not be able to shape our own destiny. This is a journey away from our dark authoritarian past towards a vibrant democratic future.  The PAP has tried to retain their dominant power  by using pork barrels, propaganda, and threats...but these are precisely the undemocratic things the Hougang people are walking away from - the more the PAP uses them to get their votes, the further the Hougang people will walk away from the PAP.

Once a people know what they are doing is right and just, there is nothing you can do to force them off their path.

On Thursday, I went to the Hougang rally and climbed up one of the blocks next to where the rally was held to snap this picture.
As I climbed up the block, I noticed that it was very clean. I also noticed that most people staying in the block had left their wooden doors open, to let they air in, were relaxed at home with their families watching TV.  The tens of thousands of people who have gathered at the open field in Hougang were from other parts of Singapore not Hougang. See... the people of Hougang don't have to go down to the open field to hear the messages and be convinced to do the right thing - they already know which road to walk and what path they are taking so they gave their standing space at the rally to their fellow Singaporeans from other parts of the island. Singaporeans came looking for inspiration in Hougang to bring it back to their own corner of Singapore.

Today we have a govt that does not listen to the people. Does not act in the interest of ordinary citizens. It does what it wants then uses propaganda and pork barrel carrots to make us vote for them. They use their authoritarian powers to suppress their opponents and character assassination as a tactic to bring down their opponents. As they do this, we can see how much our fellow Singaporeans have suffered - the elderly citizens who are made to work at an advanced age, the large segment of workers with low stagnant wages, the high burden put the sick and their families. We look around and see our beloved country losing its identity and changing in ways we do not want it to change. We see little progress in our political system as other countries in Asia such as S.Korea, Thailand, Taiwan transform theirs to be free and fully democratic moving away from old authoritarian ways.

I sensed that many people were worried that when "Yaw-gate" broke and the frivolous Png-gate was created and played up, many people in Hougang would waver and succumb to the upgrading promises Desmond Choo dangled before them. After observing them for 21 years, I was confident they would stand firm so last Tuesday I wrote "You don't have to tell Hougang how to vote" . The people of Hougang can already see with great clarity where the PAP govt will take this country unless real change takes place. The PAP govt has demonstrated time and again that there will be no change if the people can be seduced by estate upgrading to give their votes to the PAP.

Once you see the same vision as the people of Hougang, you will have their revolve to take right path and not waver. 21 years ago, Hougang was just small SMC, a little dot on the map of Singapore but the people there knew that this long journey starts with each one of us taking a tiny step in the right direction...and if we work together these tiny steps will eventually add up to be a leap forward. There are many who will distract us, discourage us, misinform us, threaten us and lure us away from our path with tricks ...when that happens, ask yourself what will happened if Hougang people had yielded to these tricks and carrots yesterday - our nation would have been taken backwards and the small progress we made since GE2011 would have been undone as the PAP will interpret an Hougang victory as an endorsement of their policies and stop the already slow trickle of changes to improve the lives of ordinary Singaporeans. The rest of us have a lot to learn from Hougang to put our country's interest above our own local interest and understand there are more important things than facilities on our estate. By voting for the opposition, the people forego a wet market and other facilities that the PAP dangled to entice them....they have to travel to Kovan to do their marketing, But no change can come without sacrifice if they had succumbed to the divisive pork barel tactics of the PAP, it will be a great loss not just for Worker's Party but for Singapore. Each political party and MP should be elected  based on how their ideas and policies will benefit Singapore and Singaporeans ..and not how much money they can redirect from national coffers to use as carrots to obtain votes, That the PAP continues to use tactics that divide and harm the country, tells us they have not changed fundamentally. The people of Hougang inspire all of us to fight against this and do what is good for our country.

The PAP also improved its vote share by a hundred over votes!

If PAP can improve it in Hougang, it means it can also improve anywhere, right?

Meaning come GE 2016, PAP will most likely not do any worse than GE 2011, that is again winning a least 60% votes and 93% seats, right?

So most unlikely there won't be any big change in GE 2016, right?

So those who suffer under PAP policies will continue to suffer, right? So not so good, right?

A hundred over votes after Yaw-gate is pathetic.

What happened in Hougang will not happen anywhere, even in the future.

In GE 2011, other than Hougang, did the opposition won, or was near to winning any SMC seats? No right?

That's why Hougang SMC, just like Aljunied GRC, is a uniquely special case. It won't happen elsewhere, even if the opposition field good quality candidates like Tan Jee Say.

That Tan Jee Say lost in GE 2011 speaks volumes about the future of the opposition, even if they have good candidates.

Thank you,Lucky.

Would Tan Jee Say have won in GE 2011 if he was with WP rather than SDP?

Because I think many voters may have associated SDP with getting sued till bankrupt so they scared.

There will still be the die-hard PAP supporters who see that small margin gain as heaven send.So sorry for them.
There will be those that could not wait as they are getting on in age.
We have 4 years to let the PAP get its acts in place. Not too sure if the country social fabric can be intact by then.

Who will be more successful in building a political party that is more than the vision of one man?

You are WRONG!

EAST COAST GRC

PAP - 59,895 (54.83%)

WP - 49,342

JOO CHIAT SMC

PAP - 9,630 (51.01%)

WP - 9,248

Slowly but surely, Singaporean are beginning to question PAP's policies.

hahahahahaha. after all the propaganda, all the talk of no accountability on YSL, dishonesty, lack of integrity, taking things for granted, starting afresh & all the big shots shoring up DC, hougang voters still put PEH with more than 60%. the result is a big slap on the you-know-who party. hahahahahahahahaha.

Who cares what % WP gets as long as they are past the post. Our President has less than 50.1% support from the nation, yet he accepts as being the majority. PAP only have 60%, but because of an unique unfair electoral system found no where else on this planet, they are over represented. Anyway HG % won is more than PAP's nation wide. In 2016, the UN should send representatives to witness and conduct our election, which hopefully will lead to a new government.

past trend is no prediction (though it gives a lot of comfort & justification in some correlative prediction) of the future.

it may or may not happen. likewise, what any party (including the incumbent) has achieved in the past may or may not happen again in the future as the beliefs that individuals held in making past may change once new information / experience come into play / focus to alter action / decision.

They (die-hard or died-hard) may have gotten that the small gain is after all the "discerning" porridge & toilet upgrading offering plus all the advantage gained from "very positive" media positioning on DC plus all the support from most of the PAP heavyweights - in short, after most of the propaganda tricks have been thrown out & laid out on the table. internet is indeed the GREAT leveller.

I think all opposite should start the following NOW:

1) Attract Local Singaporean Talents to join Opposition

2) Source, train and get ready those with Ministers's qualification as it opposition may be taking over more stake in the parliament.

PAP "damaging" policy must remove immediately such as if world highest pay cabinet immdiately remove the pro-foreigner policy and cut all new and renewal application to S-pass/EP application, then, PAP still can survive thru 2016...

If PAP can remove the "damaging" pro-foreiner policy, it will win back as this pro-foreigner policy affect all singaporean as it takes away most of our jobs or causing all of us to reduce our pay to match those salary of lone-ranger foreigners (while local need to take care of cost of parents/children/housing,etc).......

This by-election nothing has changed.

But one thing is definitely clear about our government's mindset. They like to be seen to be fixing a problem when they are not.

They are fatuous - especially in a smug and self-satisfied way that you're wrong and they're right. Even when they're wrong.

For this sort of hardened mindset whose roots are from the soil of hubris and an egoic sense of self; and is watered by the fountain of elitism, get ready for more incompetencies coming our way.

Hougang will be etched in the History of Singapore. This is something nobody including the monster Lee Kuan Yew can take away from them. The people of Hougang has the spirit which people from other parts of Singapore must learn to ensure a better future for Singapore and Singaporeans.

The spirit of "xisheng xiaowo, wancheng dawo" is evidently manifested in Hougang citizens!

"The people of Hougang inspire all of us to fight against this and do what is good for our country."

In the by election, we have clearly seen that the main stream media are dammed biased. So to learn from the people of Hougang and to do what is good for our country, we must spend less time to watch, listen and read from the main stream media.

Only with diminished viewership and diminished readership of main stream media, their bad influence will be curtailed.
Only then, we can have better future.

On a personal level, since a few years ago, I have cut down my viewing and reading time of main stream media by more than 80%. This has translated to more time for internet and saving of money.

At least as a start, you can do your your part by reducing the time to view and read main stream media by 30%. Gradually, you can increase the reduction by higher percentage.

Some effort from everyone of us will contribute to a big leap in fulfilling the spirit of Hougang.

I was one of the minuscule persons in that photo! :) A bit of TIMELY rain came down when the rally ended and we were walking towards the MRT station -- amidst chants of "Workers' Party! Workers' Party!" along the way, with a few sporadic ones breaking out even at Serangoon station! -- and we get to use the WP umbrellas AGAIN, without the speakers having to get drenched like the day before. The rally in the rain must have touched many, supporters and others!

Yes, the Hougang spirit is really something!!!

I'd also like also to thank Mr Low Thia Khiang. He's THE man. While many also talk about this big concept of democracy, Mr Low has successfully STIRRED THE FIGHTING SPIRIT of Hougang residents, so that they (unlike the majority of Singaporeans) refuse to bow to a bullying gahmen, either to be cowed or to be bought!

This is no mean feat! Esp as it started before the time of the internet. Coz let's face it, we're kiasi and kiasu. Though we're also sibeh buay-song with the gahmen, if we're still getting by, most of us will just let things be.

[Sibeh buay-song: I want to use it here rather than a proper English phrase like "very frustrated" which sounds so tame!... Just like the word shiok, I haven't come across an English word with just the right punch.]

Anyway, much as we now see Hougang as a "beacon of democracy" for Singapore, it all started with people who are just willing to forgo estate upgrading. So now, it's up to the rest of us to let the gahmen know just how buay-song we are! And hey, most of our estates have been upgraded, right? What have we got to lose?

O, and Low Thia Khiang has built up the whole Workers' Party "brand". And the party will continue to grow, with more credible and capable candidates. It's definitely not a one-man show!

Another blogger (gintai.wordpress.com) has quoted a small but powerful part of Robert Kennedy´s Speech of Affirmation speech in 1966:

"First is the danger of futility; the belief there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills - against misery, against ignorance, or injustice and violence. Yet many of the world's great movements, of thought and action, have flowed from the work of a single man.

A young monk began the Protestant reformation, a young general extended an empire from Macedonia to the borders of the earth, and a young woman reclaimed the territory of France. It was a young Italian explorer who discovered the New World, and 32 year old Thomas Jefferson who proclaimed that all men are created equal. "Give me a place to stand," said Archimedes, "and I will move the world." These men moved the world, and so can we all. "

Robert F. Kennedy
Speech at the University of Capetown, South Africa, Day of Affirmation, 6 June 1966

60% of the votes is a HUGE step in the right direction towards democracy. There is Hope.

This is when the lure the pull the sentiments of an era is over. How will we shape the future is certainly up to us especially people in their 20s now. I am already 60 so may not have more years to see change. The opposition if they are serious must create real opposition with shadow cabinet, with policy think tanks to give alternatives. Otherwise things will not really change. People are smarter and have more access to information and knowledge. We need intelligence and wisdom for the full ingredients for a successful change. Come forward to serve in ANY way. offer your time to do research if you are not a politician in the making. I notice this is most lacking in ALL the opposition parties. SDP is trying in the right direction though.

Why was Aljunied special? (uniquely special is redundant - if you are unique, you are already special). Was it because it was impossible to lose to the opposition because they have 2 ministers, 1 mayor and one ministerial potential?

So, in GE2106, if they were to lose East Coast, Bishan and Marine Parade, you would then say: "That's why Hougang SMC, just like Aljunied GRC, East Coast GRC, Marine Parade GRC, Bishan GRC, is a uniquely special case.

Well no matter how you say it, what matters most is WP has successfully retained the Hougang seat!

LTK after kicking out Yaw, quickly did control-damage job by visiting his old constituency. I think he made a clever choice of using Png, when he could choose a younger one such as Gerald Giam. He purposely chose an old horse - a 50-year old Png, to make it look very different from the 'youngish' Yaw. To be fair, Png is not a weak candidate and Desmond Choo isn't a strong one either. Singaporeans are by nature, quite conservative, usually don't change much. For 21 years, Hougang voters have been under WP's care. If WP doesn't make any big mistakes, Hougang voters are unlikely to kick out WP and voters also expect WP to send people with some caliber to represent them and Png has some. Maybe, his name Huat also helps a bit as you can see with the chorus of Huat Ah when the by-election result was out.

Hope to see more 'Hougangs' repeat in other parts of Singapore in GE2016!

WP not getting stronger, but PAP is progressively getting weaker.

Their votes have been slipping over the years. Their tactics are outdated, their strategy exhausted, their invincibility reduced to mere myths. Threats are not working. Upgrading is no longer their vote buying strategy. Character assassination always seem to backfire. They shoot their own feet at rallies. That is a sure sign of a party in desperate straits.

Compounding the problem for the PAP is the use of cyberspace, rendering the MSM irrelevant for those who know where to look for the truth.

So, what will the situation be from here. For me, my only wish is to have have a strong opposition in Parliament, at least enough to have the ability to have a hand in changing the constitution and getting rid of lopsided and unfair laws that stifle democratic growth.

Government Organized NGOs?

All CEOs of alleged NGOs should be required to declare their political party affiliations if any?

Yeah.. agree..

They also have Mayors... wonder what the f**k they do.. damn relax job man!.. get invited to all comune events & free makan.. damn good for networking and business.

If you'd asked me, I won't say that the Hougang residents were thinking about democracy when they voted for Low Thia Kiang or Png Huat.

I believe it's because of the many years of engagement that led to this voting. They must have been of god service and help to the Hougang residents. Having said that, a 62% victory is that a clear mandate but is it a strong mandate?

Singapore has a long way to go. What should be cause for worry is the growing brain drain. More and more abled and talented Singaporeans who feel they are being marginalised and are missing out on opportunities to cheap foreigners to begin or advance their career wishes will be opting for overseas countries for career advancement and development.

This will do us in 1 to 2 decades. At present, our society is no longer cohesive from the lack of integration and devaluation of our citizenship. Today, NS has lost its value.

It is now up to the younger Singaporeans to correct and guide the government. Hopefully, they are as sharp as the Hougang residents.

Anonymous said...

Anon 30/5/12 11:48

But at least 60% voters are cohesive in voting for the PAP at every election.

Isn't this more important to PAP?

Anonymous said...

@anon 13:42,
Saddam, Marcos, Mugabe, Suharto, Mubarak, etc, had more votes than the PAP, their voters can be said to be cohesive too, but where are these scumbags now? how are they remembered? how is their respective country doing?

Hougang people have shown the way, it is up to the rest in spore to take inspiration and vote the PAP scumbags out in 2016.

If PAP had won Hougang, there wouldnt be increase in conservancy charges and CPF minimum sum.

Thanks to WP, sinkies are now punished!! Too late to repent!

No. It is now time for the younger generation to vote in a new government.
Better yet.
For the younger generation to become politicians and run for office.
No need to wait for invitation to political tea parties.

All Singaporeans have a lesson to learn from the voters of Hougang. They are our heros.

Anonymous said...

When changes to Minimum Sum (MS) was announced in 2003, the target was to reach $120,000 (in 2003 dollars) in 2013. What this means is that the effective target amount will be $120,000 plus an amount accounting for inflation for the 10 years between 2003 and 2013.

When the people noticed the MS was adjusted more than the inflation rate, only then MOM revealed that MS has been adjusted over the years to account for inflation, longer life expectancies and Singaporean's rising expectations of their quality of life after retirement.

This means the MS can be adjusted by any rate higher than the inflation rate, since the 2nd and 3rd factors cannot be easily quantifiable. Maybe the actual rate was a number pluck from the air as it was never communicated to the public how the rate was derived.

By extending the target date from 2013 to 2015, the MS will now have 2 more adjustments than what was announced in 2003. More and more of our money will be locked in CPF MS.

Thats why we need true opposition MPs to voice out people's concerns.

You will be disappointed.

PAP had improved in Hougang BE 2012. So come GE 2016, PAP will most likely not do any worse than in GE 2011. That is PAP will still win at least 93% seats.

Of course I am assuming that the opposition in GE 2016 will be the same or even worse than the opposition in GE 2011. Most likely it will be, unless a miracle happen. Or God helps.

Anonymous said...

If I were PM Lee, I would not be disppointed at all with Hougang BE 2012 outcome. In fact I will be very pleased.

Reason? Like what Anon 30/5/12 22:40 said.

Furthermore miracles very seldom happen.

GE 2016 will be the same old same old story.

They will be no real change unless the oppo starts recruiting more abled Singaporeans. Will they?

Will more abled Singaporeans step up? Would they?

Unless we get a few more Chen Show Mao, nothing would change. Still the same old story.

Anonymous said...

the miracle will come from a sizeable chunk of those in the 60%,it is just a matter of putting the X for any opposition in 2016.
the game plan is to make PAP become first world opposition.

suddenly you will see all the PAP MPs speaking up, even TinPL, assuming she gets in by hanging on to GohCT'S underwear.

Singapore's millionaire households on the rise
by Plush|01 June 2012

Singaporeans are getting wealthier, posting the biggest increase in millionaires last year, alongside China and India, according to Boston Consulting Group.

"There are 17 millionaire households in every 100 in Singapore, reported Bloomberg on Friday.

This is an increase of 14 per cent to 188,000 households, the highest proportion of millionaire households in the firm's 12th annual wealth management report, which surveys 63 markets around the world."

Assuming only 2 adults per all household, it means at least 17% x 2 =34% of voters come from rich households.

Of course there will most likely be more than 2 adults per household so 34% is only a low estimate of rich voters.

No wonder PAP can get at least 60% votes at every election.

Anonymous said...

The Hougang BE result shows that support for PAP did not get any worse. In fact even slightly better.

This must surely come as a disappointment to those who want an alternative to the PAP in GE 2016.

So like it or not, PAP will continue to strongly rule Singapore for many, many years to come.

And as long as talented people can earn lots of money, there is no reason for them to join the opposition to oppose PAP.

There may be a few who may be different, like Tan Jee Say or Chen Show Mao, but being so few, they will not make much difference, if at all.

Anonymous said...

Don't be the opposition or be poor.

Be rich. Then PAP is the best govt because they make Singapore, although small, crowded and hot, still the best place to live on earth.

Anonymous said...

It's true. Singapore is a good place to live if you are rich. Or better place if you are richer. And best place if you are the richest.

And even if income gap is very wide,if not the widest among the 1st world countries, majority 60% voters still voted PAP. And the country is so peaceful and stable.

So isn't this the best place for the richest to come and live in?

Anonymous said...

In other countries, you can be rich but you may not be safe.

But Singapore is very safe. Even if you show off your wealth.

It is unsafe only when you speed or drive recklessly in luxury or supercars.

Anonymous said...

Thank you PAP.
For fulfilling my ambition to be the richest man in the cemetery.

Reason #2: For voting the Pro Alien Party.

They make careful, calibrated changes to their policies.
No sudden changes to suit populist demands.

Example.
When the first Great Singapore Flood occurred.
They did not respond straight away did they?
No.
They waited until the Second Great Singapore Flood occurred.
Because they wanted to make sure that the First Great Flood was not a once every 50 years event.

Even with a million dollar salary.
You cannot buy talents like these anywhere in the world.
