Today we celebrate Labour Day but what is there for labour to celebrate?

"Higher wages push up business costs, affect our competitiveness, and may cause higher inflation"
- PM Lee Labour Message.[Link]

Our inflation is 5.2% [Link]and largely due to housing, rentals and transport cost increases. Instead of doing more to bring down inflation in Singapore, our prime minister on Labour Day,  sends a message saying that higher wages for workers will cause inflation. He does not say high rental causes inflation. When a small business has to buy a van to transport goods, the small business has to pay the highest cost of transport in the world and with rising COEs the costs of doing business is escalating. The lowly paid delivery man driving this van all day has seen his wages falling or stagnant for the last decade. Yet, on this Labor Day our prime minister says wages has to be kept down to keep business cost low but nothing about the cost of transport which is causing so much pain to small enterprises.

What is there for labour to celebrate this Labour Day?

Today we have 400,000 low wage workers who qualify for Workfare because they work full time jobs but cannot make ends meet. Our workers are the only ones in the developed world without minimum wages. They shoulder the highest % of healthcare cost expenditure among all developed countries. We have the highest income inequality among developed countries (sometimes we are 2nd to USA).

The ones who should celebrate today are those who produce no labor-the rent earners, the banks that earn interest from the hefty debts Singaporeans have to take up for housing. Most of all our govt, that take in  billions in revenue from a piece of paper called the COE while the delivery man who drives the van is the lowest paid delivery man in the developed world. Yet our prime minister is worried that paying the delivery man more pushes up business costs when the COE his govt issues, fuel taxes, vehicle taxes, ERP costs more than 10 years wages of  the delivery man who produces the labour.  Similarly, the sales people and cashiers working in shops that pay one of the highest rentals in the world are paid the lowest wages among workers with similar occupations developed countries.

Older workers suffer from severe structural unemployment because of the influx of younger foreign labor, In the past when the labour market was tight, businesses would give older workers a chance for employment because they couldn't get younger workers. The policy to import foreign labour has taken this chance away from our older workers.

Today our most prominent economist tells us we are reaching dangerous level in our income inequality unless our wage structure is drastically changed[Link]. Yet on this Labour Day our prime minister issues a message that higher wages will push up business costs when so much of the cost pressure for businesses comes from other factors and many of which linked to his govt's approach to growing GDP. By expanding the workforce though the foreign influx, and proliferation of  many businesses which should not be located here, the cost of doing business goes up and businesses seek out cheaper sources of foreign labour to stay afloat creating a vicious cycle a large segment of Singaporean workforce whose wages have come under pressure to go down.

Instead of solving the problems that will improve the lives of Singaporean workers, our Prime Minister recites the old mantra of productivity first, wage increase later. The fact is wages have lagged productivity for so many years when productivity was increasing and our workers are currently underpaid for their current productivity - a bus driver in Taiwan is paid double for doing the same job. Instead of squeezing labour some more, Singapore can be more competitive by keeping rentals low, transport costs down and housing cheaper so that our workers are better able to compete and their wages can go up. Unfortunately, this is not the direction our pro-business govt is heading. Today the interest of the PAP govt is diversified and complex. It is closely linked to a wide network of rent seeking businesses (GLCs, TLCs) to which our power elites move to for high paying jobs after their stint in the civil service, SAF and politics.

Independent labour unions can perhaps restore the balance in our system. With a PAP man heading the largest labour union in Singapore, labour may have nothing to celebrate on many Labour Days to come.

Lucky Tan

Did that PAP man also said something like workers should be cheapest, bestest and fastest?

Or something like when he sees his CPF he feels so rich, even though CPF contribution is capped at only maximum of $5000 monthly salary. And he draws hundreds of thousands per month as labour chief cum minister!

And despite what he had said, he still won the election in GE 2011!

Lucky Tan, how come majority voters don't mind what he said?

Or mind what you said and hence voted accordingly? Maybe they don't read your blogs?

How come?

Lucky Tan

If I were PAP, I have reason to celebrate all the time, not just on Labour Day.

Because not enough talented people like Lucky Tan had come forward to form a better alternative to PAP.

So majority voters have no choice but to continue to vote for PAP because PAP is the best available party to vote for.

Will Lucky Tan come forward? Very unlikely lah.

Right, Lucky Tan?

Not really lah. For talented ones like Lucky Tan, they are certainly not daft when it comes to making lots of money.

And that's a better alternative for them, personally. So why bother to be better alternative to PAP?

The not so talented ones will also not make so much money lah. So life is difficult for them lah.

And because they are not even talented enough to make money, how can they be talented to form a better alternative to PAP?

So that's why there is no better alternative to PAP lah.

That's why if I were PAP, I have reason to celebrate lah.

"With a PAP man heading the largest labour union in Singapore, labour may have nothing to celebrate on many Labour Days to come."

That is exactly why a PAP man must always be in charge of the only trade union in Singapore.

To brainwash workers into accepting low wages as their national obligation. In the meanwhile, the union leaders are handsomely paid.

Legalized corruption? Take note that only illegal corruption is a crime. Legalized corruption, is well, a smart way to beat the system and be innocent in the eyes of the law.

Like to share what are being discovered when small medium enterprise (SME) accounts are sent for auditing.

When a company staff are to spend money on entertainment and food for business purposes like entertaining company's existing or potential clients, the companies are to pay for these entertainment expenses. This is logical, acceptable, morally correct and legal.

Many of these SME bosses and directors are very creative in using the entertainment account to pay for all kinds of food and entertainment expenses, whether these expenses are for personal or business purposes. If the expense are for legitimate business purposes, no one can argue against it.

But SME bosses and directors charge all kinds of personal expenses, whether family lunch at 5 star hotel, personal dinner at high class restaurant, buying groceries for personal use from supermarkets, etc., to the entertainment and food account.
This account is no small amount.
It increases the expense, thus reduces the profit of the company.

As a result of lower SME companies profit from higher expenses generated from illogical, unacceptable, morally wrong and illegal treatment of expense account, SME companies have lower taxable income, thus end up paying lower taxes and IRAS collects less company taxes.

SME bosses and directors receive all the personal benefits from the entertainment expense but need not declare this as part of their income, thus their taxable income are lower than the actual higher income level. They end up paying lower taxes and IRAS collects less personal income tax.

SME bosses and directors use the lower companies profit, resulted from their own selfish and inappropriate expense account, as excuse to reason that they need to hire more cheaper foreigners to lower the cost of running the business and freeze the salary of Singaporean employees.

It is no wonder that to satisfy the SME bosses and directors own selfish purposes, SME bosses and directors are very pro foreigners and uphold vigorously the open to foreigners policy.

Come all you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good old union
Used to come in here to dwell

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a xx
He's now in the air and sun
He'll be with you fellow workers
Until the battle's won

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

They say in Sin City
Everyone is a neutral there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for PAP

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Poor folks ain't got a chance
Unless they organize

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

To all our overworked, unpaid paid and over-exploited workers who have no one in the union to speak out for them, and stand up like a tall man with spine.

Anon 1/5/12 09:38

If that is true, then these SME bosses and directors are indeed talented. No wonder they are also bosses and directors in the first place.

So Anon 1/5/12 09:38, try to be one yourself lah. Can? Or no talent?

Anonymous said...

Those who can win elections, make lots of money or give themselves plenty of benefits are indeed talented.

Hence there is no reason to use their talents to be a better alternative to PAP for the people. It is also a stupid way to use one's talents.

Well, one major component - place of running a business. Commercial property prices. If not wrong, quite a no. of REIT is GLC also right. So where is the competitiveness. Competitiveness means lower costs or better quality or prices going up and up.

Bosses & directors are talented in their own way.

But employees must learn and try to be talented and smart in their own way by influecing (perhaps by constant kpkb until the other side cannot take it) conditions that are favourable to themselves. Don't forget, employees are always more than employers (bosses & directors) in terms of numbers.

They need one another (both bosses and employees) for the operation to survive so both parties must learn how to screw one another constantly & nicely so that the scale is balanced and everyone benefits out of it. Who says that talent (& the definition) must only be residing in directors & bosses. Hey internet age already.

This piece sounds like Marx prediction--class warfare. People in the capitalism world has often been misled about Marxism, especially when Lenin Stalin and Mao are painted like a Monster, that monger violent and death.

True they are monster but who is Frankenstein? Marx has predicted that Lucky can go on and on, soliciting in the most humble manner so that PAP stop exploiting us. However, PAP will only double their effort in plundering.

Only when we are able to threaten PAP from either injury physically or in their property then PAP will ceded to our demands.

Today, we can take down PAP through 50.1% of popular vote. So we do not need too much violent in class struggle. For Lenin to take down the blood suckers who are willing to murder, much more violent is needed.

I do not see our plight ending unless we are able to be a pain in the ass of PAP. The bloggers nowadays are what as Marx has predicted, the prophets who are to awaken the ignorant masses.

The terms capitalism, communisism or whatever ism is sometime abused. And the end of the day, it is all about survival and sharing of the fruits in a more equitable way.

Didn't global capitalism (in the high style of wall street) brought about the greatest financial crisis that most of us in this living generation(s) have ever experienced. Did communism or marxism cause all this ?

Did you guys read the headlines from pinky this morning on the States Times? The usual playing up of fear and seige mentality among Singaporeans.

Increasing wages without increasing productivity is dangerous.

The usual rhetoric was dished out. It was this same pinky who mentioned just 9 months ago after election that he will be working hard to increase the wages of Singaporeans.

9 months later, pinky takes a U-turn. Can you believe this calibre of leadership?

Where are the PAP apologetics?

Singapore is going down and there is a reason why.

I believe we can do better than what PAP has offered and are underperforming these past 15 years.

It's time I consider politics.

History repeats itself. The world order actually collapse in 1930. The depression of 1930s though obscure by historian is a failure of capitalism. Then banks plundered the people, stock market went to crazy height.

Hitler then shows the world socialism is the best system. When Hitler ascend in 1933, Germany then was worse than Greece spain or USA today, By 4 years, Germany was strongest. Many historian hates to illustrate what happened. In a nutshell, socialism. Nazi was left in economics but right wing in race policy.

To prevent people from knowing what Nazi really is, today political scientist tends to paint Right Wing as capitalist and Left Wing as socialist.

Even though Nazi was destroyed, some of its legacy still lingers in Germany. The Nazi's claim that bankers and speculators destroys German certainly has some truth in it. Today, while German elites keep quiet, they practice policies that rein in Bankers parasite.

The next miracle of socialism comes from Roosevelt. His new deal which seen tax rate goes up to more than 80% for the rich is socialism. You will not hear from people that socialism save USA. You will only hear USA was bail out through WW2.

If war is really so great, why not we nuke New York, and rebuild? I sure we have better economic growth.

LKY is a mother fucker who equate anyone preaching, socialism as communist. Socialism come in many forms and the democratic socialism in Germanic Europe is till date the most successful system ever invented.

Generally true but like all things, it depends. The other costs (which may be static assets that need to be worked on) of operation must not be allowed to rise so much dispportanately that it is @ the expense of or eclipsing human labour (who need to survive and do the real work).

He must ask himself. How come the leader of germany is drawing so much lesser than the leader of sinkapore. I believe in terms of productivity Germany is way ahead of Sinkapore.

PAP has adpoted the best practices of the America's Capitalist Party (ACP) and China Communist Party(CCP),the leading powerful political parties in the world today.
America’s Capitalist Party(ACP) which have become almost indistinguishable from China's Communist Party ,They’ve used their power to give themselves absurdly high pay(Leegalised corruption); they have no accountability to shareholders; and they’ve created a new caste, which is now exercising enormous political power.
CCP is best represented by 3 names this year.Bo Xilai,Wang Lijun and Chen Guancheng.
Since PAP is the best follower and not the leader,we have to wait for ACP and CCP to change first, this I can assure you will be the D day for Singapore workers.I can also assure you that ACP and CCP will have to change. But I do not know the date.

if spore wants to raise productivity, it needs to do something very urgently about its managers - from the bottom to the top.

from chit chat and gossip, and from experience, very few of those who manage people and workers know how to inspire, goad, persuade, challenge, take the initiative, lead by example, urge on their staff, understand, explain, listen, monitor, take appropriate action, be open to criticism and suggestions, get to the root of a problem, take responsibility, trust, teach and simply take charge.

there is little incentive for any worker to put in more or perform better when he does not have a good manager. there is too much following of SOP now. any fool can do that. you dont need A's or scholarships.

every person needs a slightly different way of being managed to get him to want to perform his best. and until and unless managers here learn how to do this, we are going to chug on the way we have been.

if anything, training and retraining courses should be targetted at managers. stop the bullying, poor mgt skills and small-mindedness that pervades this country.

""Higher wages push up business costs, affect our competitiveness, and may cause higher inflation"

Pinky knows that wages are low these past 15 years and the NTUC union is a dumb union with no voice.

Pinky spoke of increasing Singaporean workers' salaries during election but now, he is saying that increasing wages would cause inflation.

The fact of the matter is the people are complaining of hyperinflation at stagnant wages over the past decade. Their salaries are stagnant. But the cost of taking a cab, or pying for your utilities, food and housing has all increase. Notice that the taxi fares hyper inflated their prices and a 2 months later COE prices skyrocketed. Interesting.

The cost of living in Singapore is increasing every 4 months, toggling at 5%.

All this while, wages remain stagnant.

Yet, pinky says his initial proposal to help increase wages for Singaporeans can't work out.

So, why is he changing his tack now?

Lee Hsien Loong and his bunch of PAP say we need more productivity to get pay raise is bullshit. As I have illustrated in my previous comments, a clerk with PC, Network, SAP, emails is 20 times more productive than her counterpart 20 years ago. Instead of her salary increase 20 times, it drops in real terms.

Her gain in productivity simply went into the pockets of the rich.

And by the way, who is the most unproductive person in SG? If productivity real on par with pay, the ah mah who clean the table, the karang guni, the road sweeper seems to be the most unproductive people. Unfortunately, that is far from truth. Even PAP's propaganda loud loud so that Singaporeans despise these manual laborers, they have in reality a important component in our economy that add significant value.

The most unproductive people in Singapore are Ho Ching, Tony Tan and gangs who blow up big time in Temasek and GIC. The most unproductive people are their friends like CEO Saw, who took over the best metro in the whole world and run it into shit hole......etc If we want to find the most unproductive people, very often, we just need to look at our super talent.

How do you measure the productivity of service workers, e.g. the old people who was shown on TV clearing tables and collecting cutleries, as the PM's speech was reported on the news? How do you uplift such workers who are old?

Also, how do you measure the productivity of the politicians and people helming companies like SMRT? Do their recent "productivity" justify such high compensation?

It's not enough to resort to chirpy sound bites like "CBD (Can Be Done)". Given you are paid millions, please provide specifis: HOW CAN IT BE DONE?

They get treated well by their own union chiefs yet want us to fight for higher pay for them.. snake in the grass.

I have to agree that Li Con You is a devil. If, on passing, his ashes are mixed with his wife, he will be reborn as a Siamese twin, bodies joined together so badly that no power saw or technology can separate the pair.

SADLY....THE GREAT DIVIDE WIDENS!

The ordinary folks, the wage earners....these are the ones feeling the pinch. Being appealed to by the government come election day for support....the ones who need most that extra dollar to get by.....are feeling let down by the PM....let down by the PM's myopic equation on minimum wage increase that requires no repeat nor elaboration here.

The ordinary folks feel they are being shortchanged! They see the wealth around them benefiting but a few elitist groups. They feel everything is skyrocketing except their income. The government of the day can do better. As we cannot forcibly get our point across, maybe if we pray, we stand a better chance......Let us pray

Most poor sinkies rather suffer in silence than to vote for opposition for fear of something bad happening to them.

This is the hard truth.
