You don't have to tell Hougang how to vote!

Singaporeans are now focussed on the Hougang by election given it is the biggest political event this year. Some are offering their views on how Hougang residents should vote. This is absolutely unnecessary. The people there know what democracy is all about. They have demonstrated this to other Singaporeans for the last 20 years. Even when they were under threat of falling behind in various estate upgrading schemes, they did not yield. When the PAP dangled a hundred million worth from the upgrading pork barrel, they did not sway. What is Desmond Choo offering this by election? More upgrading more from the pork barrel - Hougang residents have rejected this form of campaigning for the last 20 years. Desmond Choo like his counterparts in parliament and in the ministry is still using old tired ideas, failed tactics and repeating the same old mistakes that lost so many elections at Hougang

Desmond Choo's rally speech shown here illustrates precisely what is wrong with PAP policies:
.

He said he had to help many with medical care, financial and legal problems. But this type of piecemeal efforts without changing the underlying policies that cause these problems will not take us anywhere. In fact, the election of people like Desmond Choo will help only to perpetuate failed schemes and policies of the PAP.  Organising a 1 day free TCM session for the sick is not going to solve the problems of our healthcare care system. Helping residents temporarily with their finances by directing them to piecemeal aid and charities is not going to remove the root cause of their problems. The more Desmond Choo goes along this approach, the more people will need help because the PAP will keep its policies intact without major change. Desmond Choo said he approached charities and  individuals rather than appeal to the ministers in his party to make changes that will solve these problems in the long term. The more Desmond Choos we have in parliament, the more the status quo will remain, more people will need help and the PAP MPs can proclaim they are very helpful, kind and caring people.

Lets not forget how the few tweaks to PAP policies came about. If not for the loss of Aljunied and the significant swing in the votes, you think the PAP will even twitch their policies let alone tweak their policies? The only way to bring about change has been demonstrated - it is through the ballot box. There is no other language the PAP understands. We can discuss and discuss. Feedback through the forum thousands of letters. We can tell the MPs in their face during meet the people sessions....but all this is useless because the PAP does not even move an inch unless you're prepared to reject their upgrading carrots and vote against them. This is the only signal they understand and nothing else. Unless people vote against them, they will just assume you're complaining and not serious about the changes you want. The PAP does not listen until you vote their MPs out of parliament. You have to show them you're serious.

This is precisely what the people of Hougang, Aljunied and Anson know better than the rest of us. We are sometimes lured by the kind smiling faces and campaign promises that they care for us and want our lives to be better but time and time again after they get elected with large margins, they will turnarond and put the squeeze on Singaporeans and implement policies that undermine our quality of life and trade-off our interests for that of their own power-elite network. Can you imagine what the PAP would be doing right now if people had not swung their votes to the opposition in the last election?

Vote for PAP men like Desmond Choo and he will fix the little pothole in your estate but you will find yourself unable to retire and financially strained when you get sick.

It is the people of Hougang that have led the rest of us through their courage and sacrifice in past elections. We don't need to tell the people of Hougang how to vote. They are the ones who will teach us how to vote!

I LIKE THIS ARTICLE. IT SPEAKS THE HARD TRUTH. WELL DONE!

I was tittering toward supporting PAP's Desmond after publicity about his aid programs; but after reading your article, I woke up !!

Yes !! Do not vote for PAP as long as the broader anti-Singaporean pro-foreigner PAP-self-aggrandizing policies remained unchanged !!

For the past 20 years, the people of Hougang had shown the rest the correct way to vote. Shame on the rest of the Singaporeans!

Amen, no truer words have ever been spoken.

Exactly, hougang people are model for all us. Shame to the 60% voters who voted otherwise

The problem I see for Desmond Choo is the fact that he do not understand the irony of what he said. He has to approach charities and charitable individuals when he could instead go to senior members of government for help.
I mean why would anyone vote for him if all he could do is to approach charities? The opposition can do that too!

Will the PAP government "engage" S'poreans more if they had not lost Aljunied GRC last Year? Will Desmond Choo challenge the party line if he has to, for the sake of Hougang residents/S'poreans? I seriously doubt so.

Is it fair to always have the Hougang people making the sacrifice? Why must they always be the one to vote to show that they want change and end up, like so of the people said, being sidelined by the PAP government? Who are they voting for? Themselves or for u?

Anonymous said...

Absolutely right. Hougang, I salute for always leading the way.

Change will only come about if Singaporeans vote against the PAP. We have to tell them we mean business when we say they are not doing the right things and not doing things right.

Otherwise, all the feedbacks/complaints will not be taken seriously if the PAP govt continues to get the votes.

Vote for WP and the estate will not be fixed and you will still not be able to retire and still financially strained when you get sick

It is a no brainer.
Vote PAP to ensure a better future for PAP and PAP supporters.

You are right Lucky.
The TCM, the hearing aids, the transport vouchers, toilets etc ..these are more crutches they want to give out to the residents so they can depend on them, and they can insult them while making themselves feel good. These are the symptoms he can treat not the root cause he can fix. But that precisely is why Singaporeans (not just hougangers) should be worried about. His good heart does not always allow him to think constellationally. These good deeds are merely quid pro votes. All he sees are hungry (greedy)mouths, is putting food int hose mouths as fast as he can, putting hearing aids in their ears, putting the extra dollars in their hands. Nothing wrong too as these are genuine cases.

But all he sees is need, and he sees no need to reason out the need for the need. That's why PAP has failed to capture HG for last 20 odd years. This sort of White Savior Complex in general very often committed by PAP is taking away dignity from people. There should be much more to doing good work than "making a difference". There is the principle of first do no harm.

This election may be a little different because the Yaw issue. Many aunties and some female voters have been so pissed off by Yaw that they swore never to vote the WP anymore. Desmond Choo's "always there for you" hints at Yaw's disappearing act and that too has offended quite a number of voters. Having said that, WP should still win, but not by as wide a margin as Yaw did last year.

Anonymous said...

Brilliantly written.

Here's a reason why you should not vote for the PAP. Voting for the Opposition is not a vote "for" the Opposition, but a vote against the incumbent; to give the PAP government a run for its money. A vote for the Opposition is a vote for democracy, a vote against monopoly, a vote against oppression, a vote for Singapore and her future.

A good, responsible government will ensure that democracy is kept alive by allowing the right environment for opposition parties to grow, because this is in the best interests of the nation.

Over the decades, the PAP has systematically stifled the growth of opposition parties, effectively emasculating them, and this is why they should be denounced as selfish, anti-Singapore traitors. If you vote for the PAP, you are basically voting for traitors who have no interest in the country's well-being, who put their party's interest above the country's.

Hougang voters know this, and the rest of us need to learn from them.

WP should not be complacent. This time round, situation is clearly different.

1) Yaw incident - some conservative Hougang voters might lose faith in WP

2) There are already 4 confirmed WP MPs in parliament. Unlike the last GE, Hougang voters feel the need to do "national duty" by voting in at least one opposition, not knowing if Aljunied can go to the opposition or not. In this by-election, there is no longer a need to ensure some opposition goes into parliament. So they may vote selfishly based on local issues in their constituency.

3) Desmond Choo has walked the ground longer than the WP candidate.

I think WP needs to be mindful of the difference.

Anonymous said...

I think strategically, WP needs to send clear message to voters that this election is to show PAP how "happy" or "unhappy" we are with PAP's policies POST the GE. If there is a landslide victory for WP, landslide means 70% WP, then it CLEARLY will frighten the hell out of PAP and they may finally start listening to the ground sentiments. It is sad that every time we Singaporeans complain about over-crowding and immigration diluting our culture and heritage, PAP will immediately label us as "xenophonic".

Voting for the Opposition is not a vote "for" the Opposition, but a vote against the policies of the incumbent.

Even if PAP lose its deposit, also like that what.

They still have 93% seats what.

And PAP will still win GE 2016 what.

Tio bo?

Anonymous said...

Most important is to win over 90% seats with only 60% votes and form a strong govt. Lose a few seats sup sup sui lah.

Win 5 or 6 seats got use or not?

Anonymous said...

This is pretty much a 'dead cat' issue. No point kept on beating it..

Anonymous said...

I don't like PAP to be govt.

But I also even more don't like opposition to be the govt.

So therefore I will still vote for PAP.

Logic of the 60%.

Anonymous said...

U r dead right. The only language the pap will understand is to vote opposition. Simple as that.

Anonymous said...

If there is fair and free election, the pap will get no more than 40% of the votes. The 60% who voted for them did so out of fear and threats. The pap cheated in each and everyone of the election in the past 50+ years. In the 1949 election they win by hiding behind the popular Lim Chin Siong. After that they change the rules to favour themselves.

Snark said...

More like: I don't like the PAP, but I fear they will make things difficult for me if I put the X on another box becos there is a serial number and they may trace my every movement.

Voters that vote out of fear and personal convenience are plain stupid. Pure and simple.

For Hougang and Aljunied only, OK lah. In fact very OK.

For 93% seats, of course tak boleh lah.

SO vote WP in Hougang!

if hougang votes for pap. I am sure the deaf will be more deaf, the arrogant will be more arrogant. Singaporean will be demoted to 3rd class citizen and life will be hard for the lesser mortals.

Whether you like it or not, the is a referendum for pap.

Potong Pasir voted for PAP and i do not think life is improving much there. Sitoh, can he be trusted ?! I believe many of the residence there are regreting now !

Pray that Choo will lose his deposit and may be we will see the light of the day !!

Many people vote for "personal interest". In the end, they are the ones who lose even more. The HDB upgrading/progress package carrots used in previous elections proves to lure votes, the recent problems of immigrants, FT, education system, high cost of livings make ALL Singaporeans suffer. PAP hear but choose not to hear. Hougang & Aljunied residents show us what's DEMOCRACY & are not afraid to say NO. I really respect such people - Nation interest above self.

This is probably the best rally speech for WP in this by-election.

YES! PAP always make people dance to the tune of MONEY - how they like to squeeze every citizen from cradle to death.

It's time we people make PAP dance to the tune of the ballot. If you vote for PAP one year after GE, they are gonna say what they have done in the past one year is sufficient and will tighten the hold around your throat for the next four years!

Continue to vote for REAL changes, not crumbs of "goodness" trickling down from PAP's exclusive party.

This is the real cunning PAP who wants you to be fully dependent on them.

PAP opened the floodgate to tsunami of foreigners.
The foreigners come here to replace Singapore Citizens and depress the Singapore Citizens salaries.
When Singapore Citizens becomes jobless or have hardship to live a proper life because of depress stagnant salaries, Singapore Citizens have no choice but to approach PAP for help.

Is the help from PAP useful and genuine?

If not because of PAP bad immigration policies, Singapore Citizens would not need to approach the PAP for help.
PAP ulterior motives of helping Singapore Citizens is to control Singapore Citizens so that PAP will gather enough votes during the election.

This is a very intelligent observation. It really puts a frame at Desmond Choo's "preacher" style of delivering a speech.

What I like to add is that there are no real PAP big shot supporters going all out for Desmond Choo compared to WP's Eng Huat. Why is this so?

PAP is hoping to disassociate themselves from Desmond so that none of the people's 'PAP unhappiness' is rubbed over to Desmond. The government does not want Hougang's unhappiness with PAP be projected onto Desmond.

That's why...Desmond Choo would stand a chance at perturbing the 64 percentage.

Yaw's case has greatly changed the minds of many aunties and old people so they will vote for Desmond this time. The outcome will be PAP's win back this by-election. Nothing will be changed and all existing policies will continue. After all, this is what most Singaporeans ask for. Life moves on.

Anonymous said...

If Yaw's case cause vote to Desmond, I will celebrate if the aunties and the old suffers because of PAP's policies because these people deserve it. If they don't want to wakeup from ideas, they shouldn't blame it on opp party or PAP then.

we are not.. we did it on our own accord.

wp did our lift upgrades with no cost incurred from residents.
and know what? HDB flats that needed lift upgrading are design flaws and ya gov is giving u the lift upgrade (which is actually a design flaw rectification) at your expense....clap for ya gov, clap!
