Sports : Home grown vs Imported Success

"To come in late in the day with imported talent and claim they are British success stories isn't about being open to migrants. It's just cheating. Nobody watching will be fooled. If they get medals, we'll feel a little embarrassed. Whether it's swimming or anything else, let's have a sporting culture strong enough for us to know, when we win, that it's a real, homegrown achievement, not a fiddle. Otherwise, frankly, I'd rather we lost." -  Jackie Ashley , The Guardian, Importing Olympic athletes isn't going to fool anybody
.
.
The above was written by a British journalist when the British sports councils were considering importing athletes to boost its medal winning hopes in the 2012 Olympics. She concluded that there was "no alternative to serious investments" in home grown sporting talents.
.
At this point, I'll digress a little to ask you this : Do you know who is the greatest table tennis player in the history of the sport and where he comes from?
.
The pride in winning an Olympic medal does not come from the winning alone but what the win represents. A country feels proud of its medal winners because the win represents a country's ability to nurture talent in the sport and provide the support to athletes to perform at the highest levels. Small countries, Norway (4.9M), Sweden (9.4M), Finland (5.3M) and Jamaica (2.7M), don't tell themselves they can't win but ask themselves what their own people are good at and how they can be nurtured to win - this is the "can do" spirit. When you import sporting talent just to win, you have given up on your own people and it represents the "cannot do" spirit ...a confirmation that you  don't believe in your own people and their talents. No surprise to me that the sports association that is most active in importing sporting talent to win is led by a PAP MP....it reflects the faith and confidence they have in our own people. Doing things the easy way and "short term-ism" seems to dominate the thinking of our elites.
.
Lets now answer the question "who is considered the greatest table tennis player in the history of the sport and where does he come from?". China is the most populous nation in the world with 1.1 billion people and table tennis is the national game of China. But many consider the greatest table tennis player in the history of the sport someone from Sweden. His name is Jan-Ove Waldner. Waldner has 2 World Championships in ’89 and ’97 and Olympic Gold in 92 with a Silver in 2000 and  the World Cup in ’90. The span of his career remains unmatched. His success is proof that small countries can produce world class athletes when they commit themselves to task.
.
I once attended a leadership course in which the instructor said that you have to believe in the people you lead, otherwise do not be their leader because you will do more harm to them than good.  There is a deeply negative effect when you have elitist leadership telling the people they are never good enough, they cannot be world-beaters and they will be behind everyone else...because what people can achieve is very often a function of expectation and belief in themselves.
.
After the instant ecstasy of winning Olympic medals using imports, the happiness quickly wears off as we ponder what those medals really mean to us as Singaporeans. Like what Jackie Ashley said in her article, we are only fooling ourselves.

Not happy, so what? It's just a feeling.

Fooling ourselves? Or so and so is a lousy minister? It's just a matter of opinion. You won't be sued for that because it doesn't matter.

Got 60% majority votes and 93% seats at elections?

Got Olympic medal(s) with imported talents?

If yes, these are indisputable solid, hard facts, not opinions. And these are what really matters.

$250K even for a bronze, you know?
Does it matter or not?

Of course it matters lah.

Sadly, importing foreign talent mentality are also happening in the schools. Primary schools are accepting transfer of brighter students and better sportsmen while the secondary school is using. The dsa route.

What happen to our education ? Not many are interested to help the weaker kids to improve but rather the absolute grade the school achieve to meet their KPI.

Everything in sin seems to focus more on the ends than the means. How to nature our children if PSLE is about ranking, meaning each kid needs to outdo one another to do while, this is unhealthy competition, akin to our own hunger game.

We should change our mind set to educate our kids to complement and coorperate instead. MOE, please think...

Thanks to China for helping us win a bronze medal. Let's now buy Brazilians for our football team, Jamaicans for our sprinters, Nigerians for our middle/long distance runners etc. The list is endless and the opportunities boundless. Why kid ourselves anymore. How about Clinton, Blair, Bush for our next cabinet? Try throw the money.

It's not that we don't want to buy but because they don't want to sell.

They are not available for sale to us, specifically.

So we got what is best available.

Just like 60% got the best available political party which is the PAP to be the govt.

Ya. You are right. I used to cheer quite hard for the table tennis team even though they are mostly Chinese. Now I feel most proud of Tan Howe Liang because he is the first & only true Singaporean to really win an Olympic medal.

You are spot on on the need for leaders to believe in its people. Genghis Khan said that he expected his officers to take care of his people before himself. Of his Generals, they must take of his horse first before he takes care of himself. Our leaders - they take care of themselves at the expense of its people

yah boyz, looking forward to the day when the cabinet is full of foreign talent and the sportmen are of various countries. perhaps by then, the PAP might be awaken to the Xenophobia and the world will laugh at Singapore incapability.

well, tht's a joke. frankly what glory do we get out of winning a medal in olympic from a PRC. as the article has said, perhaps SG govt has missed the whole picture. it justified the end with a mean.

Problem is we Singaporeans played too much computer ganes, As if when we get a player or team of attributes strength=10, speed=10 we are aure to get medals or win something.

Vote Opposition.

The PAP elitists still don't get it. If the imported talents win the get criticism,if the they lost the get even more criticism. Both ways no netcitizens going to the praise them. But from the creation of the new ministries without the 'sport' must has awaken the PM to the obvious.

Our own are never good enough except for the elites and the elites worry that we may get to be better than them. They have an incestuous relationship, promoting and putting their own people in lucrative positions in the name of meritocracy. What better way to show you that you are no good than to have an import win a bronze for you?

The trouble with importing sports talents is to neglect investing in local talents. It is a lot cheaper ($250k) to import ready-made medal winner than to groom talent ($millions.)

Similarly, it is a lot cheaper to import professionals (e.g. doctors, engineers) than investing in your own people. (Singapore has the lowest spending per student in developed countries.)

Now even the guards are imported!

Here's my personal take.

Am I proud of FTW? The answer is yes.
I am proud of her as an individual player who has demonstrated resilience, through hardworks and training, that she won a medal for herself.

Am I most proud of her as a national player?
The answer is not so simple. Is a mixed feeling.
While I truly appreciate the fact that she has taken the path to emigrate, took up citizenship, understood the importance of being a flag bearer, and competed under our banner and put us on the olympics world stage, is quite different from saying that I am very proud. I guess, and most people too, is that if she was a born-bred singaporean whom we groomed and trained to such attainment, the feelings would be doubled or tripled. Not only will we be most proud of her, but we will be grateful and thankful. However, in FTW's case, I am equally happy that we charted the leadership.

Most people want to dismiss her efforts and I think is wrong. It does takes a lot to be world athlete competing on world stage. We know and read a lot about how gruesome their training in China/Russia can be (cruel too) . So in a way, she had it easier here under the training condition in Singapore, yet was able to perform and deliver the results.

Compare her to most FTs who are here, and didn't convert their citizenship or skip NS (those are the leechers and real opportunists), I think FTW is definitely 1 league above these guys. Consider it her NS of some sorts where most didn't even go through and received their citizenship. For that, I have more respect for her.

So yeah, there is a tier of ranking, whether we like to admit it or not. The press or the government can't tell us/force us how to feel about a certain situation like this. These are delicate times. You can't force me to accept her and feel super elated just because she won a medal for Singapore given the past incidents of PRC/FTs vs locals of late. If it had been
say the likes of Ang Peng Siongs, Fandi Ahmands, Tan Howe Liangs, Azman Abdullahs, Sheik Alauddins, it goes without saying or telling or forcing, I and most Singaporeans will feel the full pride of being Singaporean and waving the flag of Singapore in the celebration.

In short, stop telling us how to feel!!

Veritas said...

When Fandi Ahmad win something even in overseas as FT or played in malaysia cup, we cheered for him. No need for MSM to urge us.

The reason is we see Fandi as one of us. Never mind you are Chinese, Malay or Indian, or whether Fandi played in Greece, we simply see him as Singaporean.

Unfortunately, that is destroyed by PAP. PAP simply hates Singaporeans to stay united. Playing division, creating contention and stress is forever LKY's motto.

Singapore is NOT the only country who buys talents.
European contries such as Britain, France, Portugal have open passport mills to naturalize at high speed African and Caribean athletes!

Notwithstanding, just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't mean we should play along too. At least most countries have a good mix of local and poached talents to boost. Do we?

Citizenship, is an institution steeped in notions of equality, identity, loyalty, perhaps even sacrifice, is being turned into a recruitment tool used to bolster a nation’s standing relative to its competitors. Concerns then arise with respect to the country Olympic athletes have left behind, other athletes in the country they are coming into, and the erosion of fair play among competing nations. As such, for every incoming imported talent that we bring in, let's not kid ourselves that the player(s) doesn't know that there is such a term of exchange here that is expected of them. Yes, they could have been bought over by Monaco or Brunei or GB, but they get their pick/choice, and is a conscious transaction. Her winning the medal (gold/silver/bronze) has merely proved the worth of the Singapore Sports Talent Spotter. The next question is, will they be given more resources to pursue even more talent-buy from here on, at expense of local grooming?

At end of day, you just can't deny that buying talents simply reduce the importance of medal counts and nation pride. IT will be some time (maybe another generation) and depending where she ended on this island, before Singaporeans can truly call her one of our own.

Lucky, it will be great if you can write about the impact of corporatisation of key industries (which faced minimum competition) on Singaporeans.

What I have observed is that corporatisation which is supposed to result in a more efficient utilization of resources does not work in real life. Corporatisation coupled with modern day compensation where CEOs are rewarded with multi-million bonuses when profit targets are met, have resulted in higher costs for Singaporeans. The most obvious case is SMRT. The ex-CEO made millions by cutting down on maintenance and increasing fares whenever she can. When trains break down creating huge chaos, the only penalty for her is the boot while she gets to keep the millions that she has made at our expense.

SMRT, unfortunately, is not a unique case. SGX brought in a large number of Chinese companies into the Singapore stock exchange to boost trading volumes so that the ex CEO (Hsieh Fu Hua) can make millions in compensation. Their original regulatory role to make sure that only sound companies list on our exchange was sacrificed in the name of higher profits. When many Chinese companies went bust because of fraud, Singaporean investors lost billions while the ex CEO made a fortune.

Then there is Singapore Power.. It provides essential services but because of its monopoly status, it can charge whatever price it wants. As a result, Singaporeans pay the 6th highest electricity tariffs in the world so that Singapore Power can make a billion a year.

Even the corporatisation of healthcare is making life miserable for the average Singaporean. In Singapore general hospital, I heard a case where a patient who needs a B2 bed badly had to be held in the A&E corridor for almost 2 days. The reason I understand is that corporatised hospitals wants to make maximum profits so they devote much less resources to heavily subsided beds. Even specialists doctors are encouraged to maximize revenue by seeing more high paying patients from the region.

Something does not seem to be right here! Hope you can use your writing skills and your well followed blog to draw attention to this subject. Maybe, just maybe, somebody up there will listen and make some changes so that Singaporean lives can be improved by discarding the mindless pursuit of profits & multi million CEO bonuses at the expense of it's citizens

I see you idiot trying to protray Singaporeans as softee. Go eat shit you traitor.

Do not use 2 cases of spartan training in China to justified that no Singaporean want to go through the same thing. I bet Singaporeans are tougher than those PRC. What Fandi Ahmad went through during his training are just as tough.

And definitely there are better ways to train sportsman. In 2008 Beijing Olympic, 2 Havard students got gold medals. Students from Havard are rich and soft dandees. They can do it, there is no reasons why we cant. We do not need to follow those PRC ways sucks big time.

In the hysteria of whether we should feel proud of FTW, why don't we as a nation, ask the Sports Fed or the Country, what will happen to FTW for the next 5-10 years next? Is there a career or sponsorship deals waiting for her, grooming her to be a sports coach etc?
In light of how Tan How Liang has ended up, let's do the right thing by evaluating where all these imported talents will end up? Is it going to be yet another exploitation, and we leave them to rot? Because I certainly won't feel any pride if that happens given our track records in this industry.

Tan Howe Liang is “Born In China” but “Made In Singapore”. Feng Tianwei is “Made In China” but “Bought by Singapore”.

We are all proud of Tan Howe Liang’s achievements. Feng Tianwei can shove the bronze medal up her ass.

Why? Because the PAP government paid millions to buy a bronze medal for Feng Tianwei, with Singaporeans’ money but without Singaporeans’ consent.

On the other hand, Tan Howe Liang paid out of his own pocket for all his training and expenses. He worked as a clerk and a mechanic. The PAP did not give him a single cent. And despite winning glory and honor for his country, Tan Howe Liang was left destitute in his old age. He couldn’t afford to pay for his wife’s cancer treatment and the PAP government did absolutely nothing to help him.

Now you see why this resonates so deeply. The PAP government bends over backward for the foreigner — squandering Singaporeans’ money to buy foreign shit like Suzhou Industrial Park and Feng Tianwei that no Singaporean wanted in the first place. On the other hand, the true blue Singaporean who spent his life bringing success to his country is taken for granted, tossed aside and left in the lurch when he grows old. This is not just the sad story of Tan Howe Liang but the sad story of almost every Singaporean.

And those PAP scumbags have the gall to ask you to celebrate the foreigner’s third-rate medal — a medal that was bought with your retirement money. They can shove it up their collectively ass.

Sweden
(Population based on 2011 census is 9,415,295)
and Switzerland
(Population based on 2011 estimate is 7,952,600)
are 2 small countries which have produced great hone-grown champions

List here are 4 great present and past champions from these 2 countries:

Roger Federer (born 8 August 1981 in Switzerland) is a Swiss professional tennis player who as of July 2012 is ranked World number 1 by the ATP. Several sports analysts, tennis critics and former and current players consider him to be the greatest tennis player of all time. He owns several men's world records of the Open Era: holding the number 1 position for more than 286 weeks overall; a 237-consecutive-week stretch at the top from 2004 to 2008; winning 17 Grand Slam singles titles;
reaching the finals of each Grand Slam tournament at least five times (an all-time record); and reaching the Wimbledon final eight times.

Stefan Bengt Edberg (born 19 January 1966 in Västervik, Sweden) is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player (in both singles and doubles) from Sweden. A major proponent of the serve and-volley style of tennis, he won six Grand Slam singles titles and three Grand Slam men's doubles titles between 1985 and 1996 and the only player ever to win the 'Junior Grand Slam'. He also won one season-ending championship title, the Masters Grand Prix and an Olympic Gold medal in Singles in 1984 when Tennis was an exhibition sport.

Mats Wilander (born 22 August 1964, in Växjö, Sweden) is a former world no. 1 tennis player from Sweden. From 1982 through 1988, he won seven Grand Slam singles titles (three at the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open), and one Grand Slam men's doubles title (at Wimbledon). He won three of the four Grand Slam singles events in 1988 and finished that year ranked World No. 1. Although he never won the singles title at Wimbledon, Wilander twice won the Australian Open when that tournament was still played on grass courts.

Björn Rune Borg (born 6 June 1956 in Sweden) is a former world no. 1 tennis player from Sweden. Between 1974 and 1981 he won 11 Grand Slam singles titles. He won five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles and six French Open singles titles. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. During his relatively brief pro career, Borg won 41% of the Grand Slam singles tournaments he entered (11 of 27) and 89.81% (141–16) of the Grand Slam singles matches he played. His winning rate across all surfaces (carpet, clay, hard, and grass) was 82.72% (608-127), and his winning percentage at Wimbledon was 92.73% (51–4); all are records for an entire career.

There are many more great success in sport from many small countries not listed here.

Now, back to Singapore.
In Singapore, PAP resorts to short cut method to mass import foreign born foreigners to represent Singapore in international sport competition. PAP pumps in multi-million dollars to train these foreign born foreigners.

With all the huge investment, this lead us to these questions:

Why can't the PAP invest in local born Singaporeans instead of foreign born foreigners to represent Singapore in international sport?

Since PAP is so determined to mass import foreign born foreigners, does it implied that PAP can only trust and believe in foreigners and PAP does not believe and trust local Singaporeans?

With so much resources and money go into training the foreign born foreigners, they only managed to win 1 or 2 medals only. Does it means the result from this PAP's approved investment is very poor? Is PAP going to account for this poor result?

Since resources and money are limited and with such poor results, isn't it better to channel these amount of money to help the poor?

Comparing the sport to Singapore at large, isn't it the PAP's lax attitude to grow GDP by using the most easiest way, that is mass importing huge number of foreigners to Singapore using the short cut method?

When PAP mass import foreign-born foreigners to represent Singapore in international sport, PAP can provide thousands of superficial reasons to justify their actions.
Isn't this the same PAP's arrogant attitude to provide thousands of superficial reasons to mass import foreigners to Singapore without any regard on the negative impact on local born Singaporeans?

Although Sweden and Switzerland are small countries, they depend on their own local born citizens to represent them in international sports to win medals.

In contrast, Singapore depends on foreign-born foreigners to represent Singapore in international sports but only to win tiny number of medals.

Let me play the devil's advocate here and defend PAP and FTW.

Yes, FTW an imported talent. However, we need to distinguish "talent". In sports, efforts and dedication alone are not enough. You need to have talent and spotted at a young age. FTW was such a talent. She was NOT a mature talent( very important distinction). She was a POTENTIAL top sportswomen so had to be groomed in order to achieve full potential.

So should we be apologetic for bringing in an "immature talent" when an immature talent basically offers us nothing.

When these talents have not achieved anything at all., they are as good as NO talent But if we had bought matured talents who are sure winners, then is fair we be criticised for buying medals. But because FTW is a raw talent, and she needs to be groomed on HOME GROUND or on our grounds, then why shouldn't we call her OUR talent or SINGAPORE MADE TALENT?

But you argue we could have groomed our own. Yes, we could have. Unfortunately, grooming is not enough. You need inert talent or born with natural attributes to excel. Since our demography offers little opportunity to discover such sporting talent, we adopted instead.

FTW would not have the kind of opportunity in her motherland for sure because they have ample sporting talents to pick from.

We adopted her when she was not established and gave her our resources or provided the love and nurturing.

Now when the child becomes matured and faced the decision to choose between her biological parent(who abandoned her) and the people who adopted, loved and nurtured her, the sensible child, in most cases, would never be an ingrate.

The parent who adopted, loved and nurtured her( to glory) is often regarded as the REAL PARENT and therefore deserves her love and loyalty.

So by the same logic, she should be FAMILY and the medal earned has been earned ON home ground.

A boy has to take an exam, but his father thinks he is not good enough to score high marks. Instead of spending time with his son to help him improve his studies the father chose the easy way out. The father paid another boy to take the exam under his son's name. The father was very happy when the fake son passed the exam with flying colors. The father was so overjoyed he even throw a party to celebrate his "son's success"!

The story is inspired by Singapore's liberal immigration policy. Cast: real son - local born Singaporean, fake son - foreign "talent", father - you know who.

Today she makes it, why could not she celebrate her joy with her siblings? What is the fuss, if you not happy it should be the one who abandon you.

Actions? You must be kidding. Most ppl involve in community or govt are either stooges, hypocrites or brain dead. Waste of time

Same with oppos wahaha

Singaporeans are basically not a smart lot. They are, however, great followers. They followed straight Ass people.

If all this acceptance of people from China ( most ) allows us Singaporeans to migrate to China if and when we are threatened, then I say.. OK man!

In otherwords, good ol Motherland middle kingdom accepts their long lost sons.

It would be great!.. thumbs up for the PAP man!..

Anonymous said...

when money has to go to sg ppl for some issues like, certain hour discount transportation for elderly, households that are struggling with sick children, lower income families, subsidy for poor patients... this govt is very kiam siap(stingy) . but when money has to go to themselves and foreign trashes, they act very generously.
do they really so respect to a medal?maybe a little, but the large part, left so much to imagine.

Anonymous said...

What are we Sinkies doing here? Rehashing the whole story again over the Last Olympic 4 years ago. What has change?

Now, HDB under Minister Khaw Boon Wan is building more 3 Room Flats to make them affordable to the people. See! He is doing Singaporeans a great favour, maybe to him, it is a kind and pious thing to do.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Anonymous said...

Brilliant. pap elites = cannot do spirit. pap elites = have no faith in own people. pap elites = not qualified to lead Singaporeans.

Anonymous said...

It is true they are not qualified to lead. Think!

Anonymous said...

I did one small action. I put a BIG X besides the opposition party in Election 2011!

Will continue doing it as long as MIW continue its anti-Singaporeans policies.

Anonymous said...

I disagree that Singaporeans are heartless or apathetic. Most of them live from hand-to-mouth and are simply too poor to do anything. Others are too caught up with basic subsistence (feeding their kids, paying for their parents health care) to have the time and energy to do anything else.

Those who could help would help. For example, an anonymous donor had stepped up and paid for Mrs Tan Howe Liang's medical bill.

Let's put it another way. Tan Howe Liang makes about $1000 a month as a security guard for an SSC gym. 30% of Singaporeans make even less than that in a month. So you see why they are not in a position to help.

The PAP has impoverished an entire generation of Singaporeans, squandering our wealth on shit like Shin Corp and YOG and Feng Tianwei.

Anonymous said...

Anon@03.57: Bullshit! Truth of the matter is that we like to blame the govt for everything. Next thing we know - we will blaming the govt for not being able to get an erection because they don't have enough oyster omelette stores at the hawker centers.

Anonymous said...

Anon@13.55

Let's just say that everyone thinks like you and let's says that the most credible opposition, workers party, comes into power. How do you know that they won't come up with even more anti-Singaporean policies. All wp politicians are good at is to poke holes in pap policies but they have not come up with a shadow cabinet with a full set of alternative policies to govern the country in case they come to power. How can you have a first world parliament without a first world opposition? For goodness sake, they can't even manage their own party in the last by election. Can you trust them to run the country?

Chris balding may be right that $100+ billion may be missing but he did say that we have $800 b to $1 trillion of total reserves. Who knows whether wp will squander away the reserves and bring it down to negative $800 bil if they become the govt for 2 terms.

While we may be upset with what pap is doing, have we really asked ourselves what happens if another party come into power? At the moment, I think it could b worse because we have an incompetent opposition!

Maybe the patriotic thing to do is to demand a better opposition before we demand a change in govt

When I was a sec student in 80s, the PE teacher will first thing make all run around big field surrounding the Gurkha camp, the more athletic few who always to reach back always had smile on their face and earned praise from this teacher. In reality we're clouded by kiasuism to realise that all of were losers and the the PE teacher is the winner. why? By making us run, he already consumed more than half of the lesson time while he wait at the finishing point. To illustrate,no warm up exercises using set of standardised stretching exercises before run ever bothered to be conducted by hom, If one is to suffer from stomach cramp, his advice is to not to run too fast along with contemptuous look. since the lesson is an hour and there are 20 mins or so left, the rest ofbtime, he will throw a basketball or football to play our own accord, again the few who knew how to play will want to show off and immediately form teams, pushing or 'offering' weakers players to join opposing teammates, Such behaviour at the school age is symbol of budding singaporean elitism and encouraged to manifest by educators, if the teacher ever bothered to spirit up the students into levels of skills and conduct proper and former dribbling, passing skill, explain the concept of gameplay, the beginners will stand a chance to learn the rudimentaries but those who already knew loved this teacher as they hog the ball possession and dont waste time. Mayb it the selfish nature of us and ineffectual school sport program that the country turn to foreigners, if they succeed and become our sport ambassadors in schools, they will instill different mentality and that where all Singaporean can be stand to benefit weak or strong,

What Anonymous 4/8/12 13:16 talked about what happened in Singapore resonates strongly with most Singaporeans.

Ex-SMRT CEO being rewarded so much financially by messing up our MRT system.

Ex-SGX CEO profited much personally for allowing the indiscriminate listing of many fraudulant S-chip companies which causes much financial losses for local investors.

The present monopoly state of Singapore Power who allows them to increase the price as they like.

There are many more examples of such situations where individual person or company will allow to profit considerably at the expense of the people. The PAP government did not make any move to correct such phenomenom after occurrence of such incidence showing a callous lack of care for the welfare of its ordinary citizens. Voters please wise up and vote for a party which is more pro-citizens in the next election. Looking at the calibre of unimpressive candidates PAP have fielded in the last election, I am very sure any opposition party candidate is up to the mark to replace the "PAP talent in screwing Singaporeans".

Already have what. In GE 2011, there was Tan Jee Say of SDP and also the scholar couple from NSP.

But they did not win what. And not even nearly win!

Even if GRC system is not fair to opposition, the opposition also did not win any SMCs except Hougang.

Some PAP votes even increased in Hougang BE 2012!

Like that how to replace PAP as govt in next election, you tell me lah?

Anonymous said...

I think it is not that PAP govt want to make Singaporeans suffer by having more foreign "talents".

It is more to do with Singapore's survival. Simply because, without foreign talents, Singapore will die.

Which is better, to suffer or to die?

Of course 60% prefer to suffer than die. And being majority, their choice prevail.

So case closed till next election in 2016.

Anonymous said...

The 60% can be wrong.
60% of your friends & relatives voted for the Pro Alien Party.

Start changing their minds now.

Convert one of your friends or relatives into an Opposition voter.

If everybody does this.
40% will become 80% in GE 2016.

About the leadership course you attender and the belief on its own people.

Ours is unique and it is to keep on making singaporeans daft.

Well and once in a while, more so in the past, you would get hear statements being made in similar tone like e.g clutch mentality, complaining, daft, not as hungry, choosy & mollycoddled, etc, to undermine the worth of locals

For outsiders, they may even think that our leaders are so super great, have suffered so much and have sacrificed a lot all for free or for some pittance so that the locals can have better lives.

Basically the impotent man always brag about his sexual prowess to everyone except that he has no offspring to show for it. The moral of the story is that the guy who uses strong words usually have very little substance to back up his claims

It is the same kind of arrogant statement like the infamous lky "regret & repent" statement that swung the aljunied votes in wp's favor. You sound the arrogant, scholar type like the "kee chiu" minister. If I were you, it is best to be humble now that momentum is swinging the other way.

I have a sense that there is so much anger out there that more & more voters will vote irrationally to spite the ruling party even though the alternatives could be worse. How many times can the PM say sorry to win votes?

If we can train FTW to reach her full potential and win medals, don't you think we can do the same with local talents? The question is, do we have such local talents who are willing to undergo gruesome training for a medal that might never come? How many singaporean parents see value in sports? Or music? Or art?

FTW did not rob Singaporeans of their chances at world stage. If our local talents can't even outshine her, how can they stand a chance at the Olympics? She merely showed us that Singapore is an excellent training ground, and if we trained hard enough, we too can do the same.

If we value the sporting arena, our homegrown talents can make it too.

Stop dismissing foreign talent. Take it upon your shoulders to actually do something.

Anonymous said...

U guys want the hard truth??? The hard truth is very few Sinkie wants their kids to be career sportsmen. So all these hoo-ha over foreign sportsmen comes across as hypocritical.

Anyway, Feng is, like the majority of us, just an "employee" who did her best & got what she deserved. If not happy with things are, look for the "management" but don't put down her or her achievements.

Actually, all these stirring seems more like attempts by people with pointed agendas to stir & divide the nation.

I'm a true blue Singaporean. Did NS. Not proud that we do not have local born Sinkies winning medals but I won't stoop to put down others who obviously worked hard to represent us. As I said, not happy go look for "management", don't take it out on the "employee".

Anonymous said...

"Will you send your kids for such training?
Where will you find children in Singapore who wants to train as professional athlete? In tuition centers?"

Argh, but we talking abt sports here , not war right? PAP 20 cents brigadiers shud refrain from reframing issues like the above statemnt. For a fact, no country does that except the inhumane communist party of China (note I did not inlcude all Chinese, only the CCP and the parents of those poor children).

Second keep repeating illogical things like Singaporeans are not prepared to sacrifice for sports, so the PAP imports, anything wrong? Yes, sports is not survival of the country, there is no need to win a medal every time we compete.

And as for other forms of talents for economic activities, Lucky's prior post has clearly pointed out: todays' manpower deficit is the result of PAP/LKY's disastrous population control of the 1970s and 1980s. We are suffering because you clowns screwed up!

Actually quite disappointed that Lucky digressed & put in this "But many consider the greatest table tennis player in the history of the sport someone from Sweden. His name is Jan-Ove Waldner. Waldner has 2 World Championships in ’89 and ’97 and Olympic Gold in 92 with a Silver in 2000 and , and World Cup in ’90. The span of his career remains unmatched."

No doubt Waldner is a great athletic but I think what Lucky just did with his digression is what a lot of Sinkies unfortunately suffer from which is believing whatever stuff Western media feeds them without independent thinking.

According to the Western media: If a Chinese gymnast gets gold (in 2008), she must be underage. If a Chinese swimmer gets gold, she must be on drugs .... So not surprising the "greatest table tennis player" is an Ang moh to the Western media ....

Waldner is great but is he truly the greatest ... Quite sad that even an educated sinkie like Lucky can repeat such nonsense without independent critical thinking ...

Just like those Sinkies who stop eating shark fin just becos Ang moh tell them to (actually several articles have pointed out the West actually consumes a hell lot of shark vs us) .... If ang moh says rice is bad, we'll all eat bread?

Given the way we Sinkies are, we may yet see this dark day come ....

Anonymous said...

Seriously, if we ourselves don't even believe in local talents, then there's no point stopping the government from importing talents. Prodigies need to be recognized and developed too.

How much recognition and support do we give for local talents like Yip Pin Xiu? Even in the music and arts industry, people like tan hanjin are moving overseas because we don't know how to appreciate them. That is the saddest truth.

Anonymous said...

Be real. Look at our local athletes. Can they beat Usain Bolt? The fella will strike your local talent dead like a lightning bolt if they dare step into the tracks with him.

You can invest all your money and time in your athletes, Bolt can skip training for a year drinking nothing but milkshakes and still beat your "talent".

Anonymous said...

Precisely my point Anon 14:24, if even Sinkies like Lucky blindly accepts and repeats without thinking that the greatest table tennis player is an Ang moh (Seriously, for table tennis!!!???) ....

Singapore is now full of traitors, domestic and alien. I saw PAP's troll trying what those high caste Hindus are doing in India. They are trying to create Neo-Hinduism in SG, LKY is Brahma, or new guru.

Their theology is parallel to what high caste Indian did 5000 years ago, when their wicked, savage and stupid ancestors conquered the Indus and Ganges plains, raping, and subjugating the cleverest people of the time--Dravidians.

Then they told Dravidians are stupid and have bad karma, thats y they deserve to collect shit. Today, these dravidians are called Dalits, having worse social standing than dogs in India.

Fast forward 5000 years in SG today, the cleverest and kindest Singaporeans has FT and domestic traitors. They keep on telling us we are the most stupid people. One dickhead even put us down by saying
"Usain Bolt" can sleep and still be able to win us.

All these Neo-Hindus must be destroyed. We must defend ourselves if pen (now), and if things get worse, with sword. These people are going to make us Dalits and pee on our head.

Does LHL think that something must be so just because he says it is? Is he practising thought control? I don't care what anyone thinks. The medal belongs to China. This player is merely a mercenary. Hired help. She spoke to the press in Mandarin. The world must be thinking that we are an appendage of China. I don't understand how people can be so thick-skinned as to claim this medal as our own. Must be desperate. I'll be surprised if the player continues living in Singapotre after her playing days are over and the incentives and perks dry up.

How many of us true blue singaporeans have the talent and time to devote ourselves in sports? None i would say. Parents are not willing to send their kids for intensive training like those in China for all sorts of reasons. Talent is one thing, having the determination to work hard is another thing.

Who likes to import? When you have to import, that means you have NONE here, so you have to resort to the last move which is to import! Has she not did her best in her performance? If she has not deliver results after spending so much money on her, I can understand all the criticism. Some people are just so hard to please, even if a true-singaporean loses in the game, people will still leave sarcastic comments instead of encouragements, even before the Olympic started, people are already giving sarcastic remarks.

CONGRATULATIONS TAN HOWE LIANG for holding a 52-year record for being the only true blue Singaporean to have won an Olympic individual silver medal. You did it WITHOUT huge REWARDS of hundreds of thousand dollars but out of LOVE and PASSION for your sport. We salute you!

True-blue Singaporean-style Olympic events we sure will win gold medals in:
- 50m empty-seat-in-the-food-court sprint
- MRT team training stuffing (see how man can get on one carriage)
- 30m train-to-train sprint (with stone seats in between as hurdles)
- CTE lane-surfing (changing lanes as much as possible to get ahead)
- 5km Pre-ERP dash - race to get there before ERP starts
: )
Any others to add?

Well, i think the point here is the way SG achieve her bronze. Make no mistake, congrats to FTW for her hardwork, she deserves the medal for that. I think most the people here is just felt that it is more of FTW winning a medal rather than SG winning a medal.

It is a bit like SG spent 250 billion to buy messi, CR, kaka, rooney, and all the best star players, give them SG citizenships, and then feel happy that SG had won the world cup....

Singaporeans are not free for sports. They are busy lining up outside condo launches and primary 1 registrations. When Mconald's introduce a toy, Singaporeans will then have to schedule their time in between lining up for this new toy and pri 1 registration and then rush to new condo launches....

Why Singaporeans behave this way and venting their frustrations is more to the fact that most of us are stressed to such a level that every single issue is picked on foreign talent.
Let us not forget that throughout the world and not only Singapore every single country imports foreign talent and others are not complaining BUT WHY SINGAPOREANS :

1. It has been much too ridiculous the sky high property prices which the Government
and the Minister in Charge is much aware off but working at such an inexcusable space
but mere singing actions being taken. What has he done that since taking office did
we see it coming down to within reached of most Singaporeans and only the Rich
with the Cash can only grow Richer by speculating. So what about the average
Singaporeans struggling to own one.
2. The CPF plans being revised on and on to no benefits of Singaporeans to retirement
age and picking peanuts under stress.
3. The living costs of even daily essentials burning a hole in most Singaporeans pockets.
Utilities, Transportations and what have you AND MUCH MUCH MORE.

So the only way to vent their frustrations is foreign talents etc. ITS PURE SIMPLE
the Government should have known better. Trying to soften the social issues but not nipping
the real butt of it WHY , WHY AND WHY its happening- Lets be very honest SURVIVAL
and its getting too expensive and silly. There is so much talks and plans to implement
but nothing really is happening and its only empty promises. Everything is going far beyond the reach of Singaporeans.

Congratulation to Feng T W for her Olympic Bronze medal win. She deserve it!

The country who should be proud of her achievement surely is PRC, not SG. She was born there, had her table-tennis talent spotted, nurtured and groomed for success in her country of birth.

As a Singaporean I am happy for her, but I am not proud of her achievement. Her success was bought with S$, when she was already almost at her peak. Even her TT coach was hailed from PRC. All SG did was provide the incentives, facility and encouragement. That was about it all!

But, if FTW remains a Singaporean and groom her sons/daughters to win medals for SG in the future, only then would I feel genuine pride as a Singaporean.

No ! I don't applaud that win at all.
The MIW just don't get it.
To import someone into the country, groomed and pay them to win for SG, is definitely not a true win !
And to add insult to injury, you can hear cheers of "China ... GO ! GO ! GO! " from the crowd.
Most shameful to me at least. Hope the MIW gets it too !

Ya! Let's contribute. Btw, this has been the most well-said comments so far I've been reading. Good work!

The thing is, in the soccer league you 'buy' and 'sell' players regardless of nationality. But when it comes to World Cup, everyone still goes back to their country, you don't 'buy' players when it comes to representing the nation.

Why so hang up about winning a medal, Singapore? The proudest winner is China because they know it's their home grown talent - just Temporary Loan to Singapore.

Talking to yourself? LOL

That is the problem with Singaporean today so hard up for glory and medal. To excel in sport in your own ways even representing the school, country in domestically or international is already an achievement. Importing FT to gain olympic glory is something not right. We are talking about National Pride here and it has to come from within our own development. There is not short cut to success not from Money for Medal concept. Our young has to know the difference btw National pride and Pay for Service. I remembered even winning the Malaysia Cup in the 80's is already a Lion roar for Singaporean. Pityful people dont get it right and very damaging for our younger youths to be brought up the wrong way.
