Leong Sze Hian's Speech at Hong Lim Park 16 Feb 2013

Leong Sze Hian spoke about the effects of past immigration policy giving us  statistics and numbers to ponder about.  The cold hard numbers tell us that we cannot trust the White Paper's claim that the planned  foreign labor influx will lead to better wages, job opportunities and better quality of life for Singaporeans.  Equally interesting is the response from the crowd as he spoke.....

The White Paper should have looked at how to reduce/eliminate the dependence on Foreign workers in Singapore by 2030 instead.
First, there is the claim that there are many jobs that Singaporean do not want to do. One of the main reason is that the salary in such industry as construction, manufacturing, nursing and F&B sectors are too low. Increase the salary and this problem can be minimize or solve.
Second, there are jobs that Singaporean may not have the ability or experience to do. In this case, the employment of FTs should be a temporary problem as Singaporeans can be trained to do the job in time. It may take 5 years or even 10 years but to project the White Paper in 17 years' time and use the same old assumption is incorrect.
Third, for essential services, the jobs should only be staff by Singaporeans. We achieve this in the SAF because the salary is high enough and this can surely be done in the other essential services if we have the will. Argument that higher wages=higher prices is flawed especially since we have money in the reserves which should be use for such important matters. If we can give $1.1B to the privatized bus companies, why can't we do the same to the other essential services.
If the government focus on how to increase the salaries of Singaporeans, productivity will follow and GDP will increase. Singapore can then be one big Happy Family. My suggestion is for the government to change its "Thinking in Reverse" syndrome when making policies that affect Singaporeans.

Nah. You are not quenching the thirst. You are making people more...thirsty

I read today's ST saying huge number of foreign patients flooding our hospitals resulting in huge GDP growth. Yes, this is definitely a PONZI DEMOGRAPHY. Pump more people into our tiny island to squeeze more juice. The end result is that medical resources are stretched thin and good local doctors and surgeons went on to serve these rich foreign patients leaving the poorer Singaporeans under the care of poorly trained foreign medical workers. Such growth benefit no one except people like Dr Koh Poh Koon, director at Mt E.

Agree totally with Anon of 10.26. If you allow employers in sales services the choice to hire cheap foreigners, they will never want to improve productivity. They will always advertise for $4/hr and there will be many FT who will come in with no control. This will chase up costs of housing, transport food, healthcare etc, which makes it even harder for the locals to accept $4/hr. The govt has lost control over costs of doing business - rental, transport, licences. So they suppress labour costs. Hence like Leong said: highest vacancies in sales and services, highest vacancies also sales and services. It is easy to understand if Singaporeans are not so lazy and be a little more critical.

The SAF solved its high turnover by paying higher wages. Now they are trying the same on healthcare nurses etc and its working because everyday I see more trainee nurses, I am happy for these young Singaporeans. But the private sector must also be changed by forcing discipline in the hiring of cheap foreign workers. A drug addict will NEVER quit unless he goes cold turkey, yet there are "emeritus leeders" like GCT who says going "cold turkey: is not the solution. Leong is not exactkl correct: the leeders of this country is not in denial, they are out to perpetrate their Population Ponzi scheme to con us!

Under PAP, smart doctors and surgeons, just like any profession, want to make more money. Cost of living is very high you know, or else how to have a good life?

So what's wrong with that?

Of course things may go wrong if you become PAP candidate. You may not be elected, unlike in the past.

But anyway, not MP never mind, still can earn lots of money at Mt E, tio bo? So many rich Indonesians and foreigners want to come here for medical checkup and treatment, so of course must service them lah. Money, money, money.

When the establishment do not even want to listen to people like Lim Chong Yah, Prof Tommy Koh, who do you think they will listen to? Do the right thing in 2016 and those ostriches will sit up and repent.

Don't be daft. If they listen, there will be less money for the government.

Like that how to pay ministers and top civil servants well?

A commentator to Mr. Yoong Siew Wah`s blog said he had information that the real target was 8 million. Come to think of it, from the way the government has gone about presenting the White Paper and its past practices, the White Paper could have been a trial balloon for an eventual increase to 8 million. They misjudged the public reaction and was forced to retreat into meaningless jargon like "worst case scenario", "a projection not a target",etc.Perhaps Mr. Yoong, with his intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the government can elucidate on this in his blog.

The point of the White Paper is not to help Singaporeans - it is to help PAP and their cronies earn more $$$ in this population Ponzi Scheme and then get out when they have earned their millions.

Fear not, the slipping middle class will be expediently replaced by the foreign class.

From the horse mouth of Emeritus Goh on the protest

“Too political, too one-sided, appealing to emotions only and not shedding light on important issues,” he wrote on his Facebook.

Now, why don't the people ask his party to shed the real light on the all important white paper - how to reduce dependency on foreign labor, grow economy and still have a swiss standard of living?!!

Unbelievable. This is the signs that they have listened? ha! 1 GRC & 2 SMCs and you think they are listening? 5000 people, 50,000 people or 200,000 people before they will even entertain us? Don't forget, 77:13 !!!!! What monster have the people created in the last 40 years?

My vote is secret said...

They will stubbornly hold their views that a high population is the answer.

Any other way is too complicated and they do not want to upset business people like Adelson ( Marina Bay Resorts) Ecclestone (F1), and all those who bought Sentosa Cove and Nassim area.

I think they would rather leave like what Georgie did.
Sucide? nah!.. cannot enjoy millions when dead as LKY.

Fret not. With the momentum that WP has gained, I'm sure they will temper the PAP's imprudence in due course.

Leong Sze Hian's speech very direct to the core (ie. fundamental flaws) of population white paper. In essence (to recap):
1. Singapore - A State (of Denial) regarding true situation on the ground.
2. Real wage growth = $1/yr is real growth! (except for PAP Ministers, lah)
3. Wage increases - last 5 yrs, 4 years of negative wages increase, 1 yr +0.5%
4. Statistical manipulation of work force = changing part-time workers from <30 hrs to <35 hrs & then excluding them from calculations to only full-time workers.
5. Wages increases due to working more hours, not higher wage rates - to an inhumane 72 hrs or 12 hrs/6 days/week. That is wage increase!
6. Wage increase tied to productivity - means die die, never increase, lah! (productivity stat calculated by govt statistic bureau - if can fudge workers definition, can also fudge productivity figure). Go figure!
7. Govt recent statement said in slowdown in new citizens/PRs/foreign workers intake, figures in white paper says otherwise! White paper projects significant increases in new citizens, PRs & foreign worker intake! State (of denial).
8. White paper says foreign intake to help the aged. No pension, CPF withdrawal restricted, no welfare, no healthcare, no age subsidies? How would it help the elderly?

Goh Chok Tong is jealous he can't put across issues and move people as well as the speakers at the Feb 16 gathering did. His remarks are just sour grapes and a very amateurish put down, because he has no arguments to the Leong's examples of how the govt is lying and fudging facts and figures.

They also clearly show up the govt's petty nature. Or is the man already senile?

Anonymous said...

Hi Lucky,
I know you can't wait to kick the PAP out.
But Leong spoke on 16 Feb 2013, not 2016.
Go look at your heading, it is still 3 years till 2016!!!

I think in order to make the people see eye to eye with them the gov has to find better debaters and marketers to present their policies more convincingly as not everyone can easily understand the helicopter picture like the scholars.

No matter how it is packaged or presented.
Shit is still shit.
The minute you unwrap the paper and open the box ....

It will look like shit
Smell like shit
Feel like shit
And taste like shit (if you are stupid enough to need a taste test to convince yourself)

It's easier and less effort to just do the right thing.
Stop lying to us.
Behave like a responsible and loyal Singaporean.
Be loyal to the National Pledge.
And honestly do the job we trusted you to do.

Tourism growth in 2012 is around 14m from the previous, projection growth is around 18m in 2016 in 2020 projection growth to be 22m and population projection growth from 5.3m to 6m in 2020?

What do you think? About the overpopulation and overcrowding now and 2020?

How will it be like in 2020?

My suggestion is for the government to change its "Thinking in Reverse" syndrome when making policies that affect Singaporeans.

Becos the policies are liked, the way they are, by the majority hence it is highly risky to rock the boat as the titanic has done.

The statistics released by the papist Leegime are all manipulated to give a false impression. This is the Lee Kuan Yew way to control the minds of Singaporeans.
